Development and applications of transition-edge sensors

This thesis focuses on the theory, development and applications of Transition- Edge Sensor (TES) arrays. The main results are the design and development of a fabrication process for a 256 pixel X-ray TES detector with a novel geometry and the development of a measurement setup for TES detectors used in elemental analysis with Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) measurements. In the early stages of this thesis we fabricated a small scale 32 pixel TES array, but for an actual application purposes the pixel count and the consistency of the fabrication needs to be higher. Local Structure of Supported Keggin and Wells-Dawson Heteropolyacids and Its Influence on the Catalytic Activity

[EN] Keggin [PW12O40]3– and Wells–Dawson [P2W18O62]6– heteropolyanions are nanosized transition-metal-oxygen clusters belonging to the heteropolyacids (HPAs) family. They are widely used as catalysts due to their high Brønsted acidity, and their dispersion on solid supports favors the accessibility to their acid sites generally increasing the catalytic activity. A series of binary materials composed of Keggin or Wells–Dawson HPAs and SiO2, TiO2, and ZrO2 have been prepared by impregnation or solvothermal methods. Large 256-Pixel X-ray Transition-Edge Sensor Arrays With Mo/TiW/Cu Trilayers

We describe the fabrication and electrical characterization of 256-pixel X-ray transition-edge sensor (TES) arrays intended for materials analysis applications. The processing is done on 6-in wafers, providing capabilities on a commercial scale. TES films were novel proximity coupled Mo/TiW/Cu trilayers, where the thin TiW layer in between aims to improve the stability of the devices by preventing unwanted effects such as Mo/Cu interdiffusion. The absorber elements were electrodeposited gold of thickness 2 μm. The single-pixel design discussed here is the so-called Corbino geometry. Using photoelectron emission microscopy with hard-X-rays

We present several successful test cases of using photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) for photon energy up to 25 keV. First, the full extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis was implemented in areas as small as 100 mum(2) for transition-metal K edge absorption spectra and, therefore, demonstrated the feasibility of combining structural and chemical analysis with hard-X-ray absorption spectroscopy with high lateral resolution. We also show that PEEM can be used in a transmission (radiography) mode as an imaging detector for hard-X-ray, This approach again leads to the unprecedented 0.3 mum lateral resolution, particularly critical for the use of coherence-based phase contrast …

The occupied and unoccupied electronic structures of three highly popular, closed shell organoiron complexes ([Fe(CO)(5)], [(eta(5)-C5H5 )Fe(CO)(mu-CO)](2), and [(eta(5)-C5H5)(2)Fe]) have been theoretically investigated by taking advantage of density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled to the isolobal analogy (Elian et al. A structural comparison of halloysite nanotubes of different origin by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Electric Birefringence

The structure of halloysite nanotubes (Hal) from different mines was investigated by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and Electric Birefringence (EBR) experiments. The analysis of the SANS curves allowed us to correlate the sizes and polydispersity and the specific surfaces (obtained by a Porod analysis of the SANS data) of the nanotubes with their specific geological setting. Contrast matching measurements were performed on patch Hal (from Western Australia) in order to determine their experimental scattering length density for a more precise analysis.
