En este trabajo abordo la cuestión de si el autoconocimiento es compatible con una individuación externista del contenido mental. En contra de algunas posiciones, considero el autoconocimiento como un logro cognitivo genuino. Aunque no es incorregible ni infalible, el autoconocimiento es directo (no inferencial), a priori (no basado en la investigación empírica), y dotado de especial autoridad y presunción de verdad. El problema consiste en saber si el autoconocimiento, así entendido, es compatible con el externismo. Mi respuesta será afirmativa. El externismo concibe el significado de las expresiones y el contenido de las actitudes mentales como determinados, en parte, por relaciones del sujeto con su entorno natural o social. Un problema central para el externismo es su aparente incompatibilidad con el autoconocimiento (el privilegio del Cogito cartesiano). La tesis central del artículo es que externismo y autoconocimiento, contra esta apariencia, son realmente compatibles. Firms are permanently looking for ways and for tools conditioning the creation of 8 lasting, long-term competitive advantage. A firm’s strategic potential, its resources, capabilities 9 and competences, is an important tool. The article delves into the relationship between these 10 potentials as identified from the perspective of the resource-based view. Herein, particular 11 emphasis is placed upon competences, as this is most distinctive strategic potential of a firm 12 because it plays a key role in building and maintaining competitive advantage.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to identify the premises of the evolution and development of firm competences in strategic management. Design/methodology/approach: The article indicates the key role of competences in strategic management. An extensive literature review and an identification approach were used. The HOWERD model for estimating the most likely alignment between an OWL ontology and an Entity Relation Diagram (ERD) is presented. Automatic alignment between relational schema and ontology represents a big challenge in Semantic Web research due to the different expressiveness of these representations. A relational schema is less expressive than the ontology; this is a non trivial problem when accessing data via an ontology and for ontology storing by means of a relational schema.
