Toimijuutta toisella kielellä : kansainvälisten sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoiden ammatillinen suomen kielen taito ja sen kehittyminen työharjoitteluissa
2017
This dissertation focuses on the development of the agency and professional Finnish language skills of international nursing students studying in an English-medium degree program in Finland. The study draws on sociocognitive and ecological perspectives to examine the social nature of language and its use. This ethnographic theoretical-methodological orientation helps to analyze both subjectively experienced and collectively emergent factors. This longitudinal, multidisciplinary, and multimethodological study examines how the professional language skills and agency of international nursing students develop during their practical training. More specifically, the focus is on the situated and e…

Applying Student Development Theories: Enhancing International Student Academic Success and Integration
2019
Student development theories (SDT) focus on the growth and change occurring in students while attending higher education. In this article, we propose that the application of student development theories supports holistic development in international students and helps us understand international students’ academic success and integration. We outline a combination of student development models, derived from SDT, and interact them with concepts from international student mobility and migration (ISM). These models, when applied to student services, may assist higher education institutions (HEIs) in designing student services for international students enhancing academic success and integration.
Do they stay or go? Analysis of international students in Finland
2021
The increase in international student mobility raises questions of how many international students choose to stay in their host country and the reasons why some stay and others leave. This study examines factors affecting international students to stay in Finland three years after graduation. Tracking 13 (years) graduating cohorts across national (Finland) data registries, we find family ties and labour market opportunities relate to an increased probability an international student stays in Finland three years after graduation. peerReviewed
The educational paradigm shift—a phenomenographic study of medical teachers’ experiences of practices
2023
Abstract Background This paper proposes a novel approach to the development of competence-oriented higher education, a national transformation aimed at harmonising and digitising undergraduate medical and dental education in Finland. Methods We apply phenomenography as a viable qualitative method for medical education research. To better understand medical teachers’ expectations towards the change in the educational paradigm, we need to study teachers’ experiences of the current practices in undergraduate medical and dental education. The phenomenographic approach facilitates solid links between research, educational development, and change. Results The phenomenographic study maps the quali…
How the Issue of Unemployment and the Unemployed Is Treated in Adult Education Literature within Polish and U.S. Contexts
2016
This paper, based on a qualitative analysis of adult education literature, presents a comparison of approaches to unemployment-related problems in Poland and the US. Unemployment serves here as a lens through which attitudes towards various areas connected with adult education can be viewed. The conclusions drawn from the research can be both the source of reflection for adult educators in different socio-cultural contexts as well as the starting point for further research related to the topics explored in the text
Å høre til i livet : en narrativ studie om selvmordsforebygging i skolen
2016
Masteroppgave pedagogikk - Universitetet i Agder 2016 A feeling of belonging A narrative research about suicide prevention in schools Motivation: Norwegian teenagers are in general well-functioning. They do well in school, have healthy recreational activities, don’t use alcohol and drugs much, have friends and are satisfied with their parents. At the same time there are some disturbing signals. Studies report increasing numbers of youth struggling with their mental health; 15% of the adolescents have indulged in self-harm, 20% have had suicidal thoughts and 10,4% have attempted suicide. The World Health Organization (WHO) claims that suicide is one of the world’s biggest health challenges. …
Sammenhengen mellom mestringsforventning, helserelatert livskvalitet og selvrapportert fysisk aktivitet blant elever i videregående skole
2016
Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Background: Two different intervention models were developed to increase participation in physical education in high school, targeting “motion enjoyment” and “sport enjoyment”. Both models are intended to increase the pleasure of physical activity in physical education, as well as to contribute to the development of students’ skills, abilities and increase future commitment. The intention behind the motion enjoyment model is to reinforce positive experiences which are related to physical activity, along with raising the awareness in young people of the health benefits associated with physical activity. The sport enjoyment model …
Læringspotensial i en digital interaktiv matematikkundervisning : en analyse av læringspotensialet i geometriundervisningen på 8. trinn med utstrakt …
2016
Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 The theme of this master thesis is learning potential in mathematical tasks designed for geometry teaching in GeoGebra in 8th grade. This thesis is written in connection to the project Digital interactive mathematics teaching (DIM), where the goal is to create innovative mathematics teaching by using digital tools in a pedagogic context. Previous research has documented that students learning outcome of the teaching is largely influenced and limited by the tasks that are given. In this context analysis of the tasks learning potential is particular interesting. Therefore, my research question is: What learning potential is it in …
Den Virtuelle Matematikkskolen - Ungdomstrinnet : En studie av hvilke pedagogiske konsekvenser bruk av nettressursen DVM-U kan føre med seg
2016
Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 Many lower secondary school students struggle with mathematics and with motivation in the subject. To improve student achievement and motivation in mathematics, The Norwegian Centre for ICT in Education and The Norwegian Centre for Mathematics Education have developed an online learning resource that contains mathematical examples, exercises and games, called The Virtual School of Mathematics – Lower Secondary (DVM-U). The Norwegian Centre for ICT in Education suggest that DVM-U can be used in preparation of a topic, or as something students can work with if they do not benefit on a satisfactory level from the classroom teaching…
