The Education Production Function reviewed in the framework of Education For All in Sub-Saharan Africa: from theoretical and methodological bounds to…

2007

The Coleman report (1966) was the first of numerous researches exploring quality of learning determinants analysis. With the Education Production Function (EPF), economists have greatly contributed to the extension of this research domain. Actually, empirical works are leading the field with important methodological debates which have fuelled controversies (Hanushek, 2003; Krueger, 2003). Thus, methodological issues have particularly rallied researchers' interests on empirical estimations, while academic researches on the renewal of the theoretical framework have remained scarce despite obvious bounds. Without contesting the validity of miscellaneous estimation problems and the necessity of…

Fe-periclase reactivity at Earth's lower mantle conditions: Ab-initio geochemical modelling

2017

Intrinsic and extrinsic stability of the (Mg, Fe) O solid mixture in the Fe-Mg-Si-O system at high P, T conditions relevant to the Earth's mantle is investigated by the combination of quantum mechanical calculations (Hartree-26 Fock/DFT hybrid scheme), cluster expansion techniques and statistical thermodynamics. Iron in the (Mg, Fe) O binary mixture is assumed to be either in the low spin (LS) or in the high spin (HS) state. Un-mixing at solid state is observed only for the LS condition in the 23-42 GPa pressure range, whereas HS does not give rise to un-mixing. LS (Mg, Fe) O un-mixings are shown to be able to incorporate iron by subsolidus reactions with a reservoir of a virtual bridgmanit…

Process analysis of a biomass-based quad-generation plant for combined power, heat, cooling, and synthetic natural gas production

2015

Abstract A new concept for upgrading distributed co-generation plants to quad-generation plants, which combine the production of power, heating, cooling and synthetic natural gas (SNG), is designed and analyzed. Five cases with SNG production ranging from 0% to 100% of total energy outputs are designed to simulate different modes of operation. The quad-generation system is simulated using ASPEN PLUS and described by simulating different portions of the system. This paper also describes the new process, which is of particular interest for improving the total first law efficiency. With this system, it is possible to increase the efficiency of natural resource utilization, minimize the environ…

Mechanistic Understanding of Food Effects: Water Diffusivity in Gastrointestinal Tract Is an Important Parameter for the Prediction of Disintegration…

2013

Much interest has been expressed in this work on the role of water diffusivity in the release media as a new parameter for predicting drug release. NMR was used to measure water diffusivity in different media varying in their osmolality and viscosity. Water self-diffusion coefficients in sucrose, sodium chloride, and polymeric hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) solutions were correlated with water uptake, disintegration, and drug release rates from trospium chloride immediate release tablets. The water diffusivity in sucrose solutions was significantly reduced compared to polymeric HPMC and molecular sodium chloride solutions. Water diffusivity was found to be a function of sucrose concen…

Efficient energy conversion for cubic third-harmonic generation that is phase matched in KTiOPO(4).

2000

We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, that efficient third-harmonic generation can be achieved with a cubic contribution much larger than the quadratic processes. An energy-conversion efficiency of 2.4% is achieved for cubic third-harmonic generation that is phase matched along the x axis of a KTiOPO(4) crystal by use of a picosecond fundamental laser emitting at 1618 nm. The associated cascading processes are only 10% of the pure cubic interaction, which is very suitable for study of the specific quantum optical correlations. Calculations of the third-harmonic generation conversion efficiency with respect to group-velocity dispersion and to the longitudinal Gaussian beam pro…

Long-range & Self-powered IoT Devices for Agriculture & Aquaponics Based on Multi-hop Topology

2019

This article presents the prototype design and testing of a long-range, self-powered IoT devices for use in precision agriculture and aquaponics. The devices are designed using the ultra-low power nRF52840 microcontroller with Bluetooth 5 support and ambient energy harvesting. A power of 942µW is harvested in an indoor environment. The devices are therefore suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, as natural sunlight will provide far more energy compared to artificial indoor lights. A line-of-sight range of up to 1.8km is achieved with the use of coded transmissions. However, the coverage area and range can be extended significantly by deploying the devices in multi-hop network topology. T…

Assessment of MOSFET switching losses in an LLC converter by a calorimetric method

2023

The present work aims to implement a calorimetric method to measure the power dissipated during MOSFET switching in a high efficiency LLC resonant converter. The power dissipated from switching can significantly impact the total power dissipated by the device and consequent efficiency, so correct quantification is fundamental for optimizing the devices and increasing the efficiency of the converters. In LLC converters, this type of dissipated power cannot be measured with standard methods such as measurement with oscilloscopes as some of the energy that is recovered and not dissipated. The calorimetric method requires reasonably accurate measurement of thermal resistance and the temperature…

Hybrid Energy Storage for Underground Mining EV

2021

One of the main concerns when it comes to contributions to the carbon footprint is the consumption of fuel by vehicles, more specifically that of mining vehicles. One solution to this problem is replacing the combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles. This also poses the problem of low power density. This paper proposes a solution of using supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors with the aim of investigating how they can affect the performance of electric vehicles. For this purpose, a background of fuel consumption and alternative solutions to the problem are discussed, a prototype was designed and built. It was found that when supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors were used in combin…

Observable Variables in Thermoelectric Phenomena

2002

New transport equations for the thermoelectric phenomena have been deduced. All of the variables in this formulation are observable quantities. The limitations of the usual formulations, which work with nonobservable quantities, have been overcome. The electric potential can be measured by using auxiliary probes which connect the electronic conductor to a potentiometer. This observable electric potential depends on the nature of the probes but not on the room temperature where the potentiometer is placed. Also, we emphasize that absolute values for the thermoelectric power are in contradiction with the thermodynamic limitation of measuring electric potential differences in these systems. Th…

Compared regimes of NDVI and Rainfall in semi-arid regions of Africa

2006

International audience; Bi-monthly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) at an 8km spatial resolution from the advanced very high resolution radiometers (AVHRR) was used from 1981 to 1995 to analyse the vegetation response to rainfall supply in semi-arid regions of Africa. Within the 200-600 mm annual rainfall belt, for which the apparent NDVI response to rainfall was the strongest, three regions were selected which exhibited different patterns in their NDVI regimes and/or relationships with rainfall. The regions, located in western, southern and eastern Africa, were split into coherent sub-regions in terms of mean regime of photosynthetic activity through a cluster analysis. Overal…
