THE COSTS AND BENEFITS OF EDUCATION – A BRIEF REVIEW
2010
Information on the profitability of investment in the educational system of Romania is now almost inexistent, so the assertion that education is, at least in words, a national priority, which, exploited, can generate sustainable economic growth and social welfare, is not founded now on any economic data. Next we perform an analysis of the current global research findings in the field, emphasizing, where necessary, the problems remained unsolved.
Disease dispersion as a spatial interaction: The case of Flavescence Dorée
2020
International audience; Flavescence dorée is a serious and incurable vine disease transmitted by an insect vector. Focusing on its spatial diffusion and on its control with pesticides, this paper investigates the private strategies of wine producers and their socially optimal counterparts. The socially optimal regulation has to address two externalities regarding private treatment decisions: (a) the insufficient consideration of collective benefits from controlling the vector populations; (b) the failure to take into account environmental damage related to pesticide application. The probability of infection is estimated on French data from a spatial econometric specification. Three alternat…
Multi-resolution investigations of the methane IR spectrum. At the borderline between modelling state of the art and astrophysical needs
2009
International audience; Remote sensing of the atmosphere of astrophysical objects relies essentially on molecular spectroscopy. Astrophysical investigations generally need both complete and accurate spectroscopic databases. Despite continuous efforts in experimental and theoretical spectroscopic investigations, the lack of data in specific spectral regions of interest is one of the principal limitation of the presently available spectroscopic databases. Extrapolations to relevant experimental conditions like high temperature is also a major issue for astrophysical applications. Among other molecules, methane is present in the atmosphere of many astrophysical objects. The modeling of its abs…
A new approach for clustering of effects in quantile regression
2017
In this paper we aim at nding similarities among the coefficients from a multivariate regression. Using a quantile regression coefficients modeling, the effect of each covariate, given a response (also multivariate) is a curve in the multidimensional space of the percentiles. Collecting all the curves, describing the effects of each covariate on each response variable, we could be able to assess if only one or more covariates have same effects on different responses.
Effects of initial performance, gross efficiency and VO_2peak characteristics on subsequent adaptations to endurance training in competitive cyclists
2018
The present study investigated the effects of initial levels of cycling performance, peak oxygen uptake (www.frontiersin.orgO2peak) and gross efficiency (GE) on the subsequent adaptations of these variables and their relationship following high-intensity training (HIT) designed to increase www.frontiersin.orgO2peak in competitive cyclists. Sixty cyclists (www.frontiersin.orgO2peak = 61 ± 6 mL kg-1 min-1) were assigned a 12-week training program consisting of twenty-four supervised high-intensity interval training sessions and ad libitum low intensity training. GE was calculated at 125, 175, and 225 W and performance was determined by mean power during a 40-min time-trial (Power40 min). In a…

Treatment of Combined Dairy and Domestic Wastewater with Constructed Wetland System in Sicily (Italy). Pollutant Removal Efficiency and Effect of Veg…
2021
Dairy wastewater (DWW) contains large amounts of mineral and organic compounds, which can accumulate in soil and water causing serious environmental pollution. A constructed wetland (CW) is a sustainable technology for the treatment of DWW in small-medium sized farms. This paper reports a two-year study on the performance of a pilot-scale horizontal subsurface flow system for DWW treatment in Sicily (Italy). The CW system covered a total surface area of 100 m2 and treated approximately 6 m3 per day of wastewater produced by a small dairy farm, subsequent to biological treatment. Removal efficiency (RE) of the system was calculated. The biomass production of two emergent macrophytes was dete…

Enhancing the luminescence efficiency of silicon-nanocrystals by interaction with H+ions
2018
The emission of silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs), synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in water, was investigated on varying the pH of the solution. These samples emit μs decaying orange photoluminescence (PL) associated with radiative recombination of quantum-confined excitons. Time-resolved spectra reveal that both the PL intensity and the lifetime increase by a factor of ∼20 when the pH decreases from 10 to 1 thus indicating that the emission quantum efficiency increases by inhibiting nonradiative decay rates. Infrared (IR) absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments allow addressing the origin of defects on which the excitons nonradiatively recombine. The linear correl…
