An off-line ion guide quadrupole mass spectrometer system

2017

Off-line ioniohjain kvadrupolimassaspektrometri systeemi. The commissioning of a new off-line ion guide quadrupole mass …

The Material Resources Using Efficiency in Polish Public Hospitals

2017

Within many health care systems worldwide, increased attention is being focused on resources management. Specifically, resources are one of three principle health system inputs. Resources are the basis for developing the capabilities and competences of public hospitals. The resources protect functioning of public hospitals, at the same time determining the efficiency achievement of the objectives - they are the basis for their efficiency and competitiveness. The article is focused on an identification of spatio-temporal diversification of material resources using efficiency in Polish public hospitals. The data collection was achieved through secondary sources such as The Ministry of Health …

Industrial symbiosis for increasing the efficiency in the use of materials and energy

2015

In industrial ecosystems efficiency and optimization of resources and energy, waste minimization and enhancement of the products represent an important strategy in a perspective of circular economy. From this comes the concept of industrial metabolism, intended as the whole process that includes resource fluxes through the industrial systems, their transformation and finally their disposal in minimum percentage, as waste. Currently Industrial Ecology (EI) includes all those multidisciplinary contributions for the eco-optimization of the relationship between industry and the environment as a further step forward in the concept of sustainable development. The industrial symbiosis, which repre…

Diverse societies are more productive: a lesson from ants

2012

The fitness consequences of animal personalities (also known as behavioural syndromes) have recently been studied in several solitary species. However, the adaptive significance of collective personalities in social insects and especially of behavioural variation among group members remains largely unexplored. Although intracolonial behavioural variation is an important component of division of labour, and as such a key feature for the success of societies, empirical links between behavioural variation and fitness are scarce. We investigated aggression, exploration and brood care behaviour in Temnothorax longispinosus ant colonies. We focused on two distinct aspects: intercolonial variabil…

Has Multiculturalism Failed in Europe? Migration Policies, State of Emergency, and Their Impact on Migrants’ Identities in Italy

2014

This chapter analyzes migration policies in Italy within the larger frame of the debate on multiculturalism and its failure in Europe. The first part focuses on the exceptional flow of migrants that after the recent conflicts in Northern Africa was directed toward Europe across the Italian coast. The emergency raised issues for the defense of territories, social security, and preservation of identity. The author demonstrates the inefficiency of the Italian migration and emergency policies that has been adopted at the arrival of undocumented migrants from Northern Africa in 2011. The chapter uses the case of Italy to show the weakness of Europe in developing effective forms of coexistence an…

The Inefficiency of Knowledge and the Limits of Explanations; the Necessity of Critique

2013

July 22nd 2011 Norway experienced the deadliest terror attack in the country since World War II. One man, Anders Behring Breivik, ABB (33), blew up the Governmental Headquarters in our capital Oslo, killing eight people. Later that day he shot and killed, one by one, 69 youths attending a summer camp at Utøya, and wounded many others. His target was the Norwegian Labour Party, its most prominent and influential members, and those who one day might be. His country is dying he says, because of multiculturalism. He is a commander and knight—future leader and even king. His actions were political, compulsory—necessary. . . he says. He regrets nothing.

Commitment and choice of partner in a negotiation with a deadline

2002

This paper analyses the effects of partially revocable endogenous commitments of a seller in a negotiation with a deadline. In particular, we examine when commitment is a source of strength, a source of inefficiency and when it does not affect the bargaining outcome at all. We show that when commitment possesses a minimum amount of irrevocability this crucially determines the bargaining outcome. In the bilateral bargaining case, commitment becomes a source of inefficiency since it causes a deadline effect. In the choice of partner framework, however, the deadline effect disappears and there is an immediate agreement and, moreover, commitment becomes a source of strength since it increases t…

Data from: Characterization of recruitment through tandem running in an Indian queenless ant Diacamma indicum

2017

Tandem running is a primitive recruitment method employed by many ant genera. This study characterizes this behaviour during the recruitment of colony mates to a new nest in an Indian ant Diacamma indicum. Tandem leaders who have knowledge of the new nest lead a single follower at a time, to the destination by maintaining physical contact. In order to characterize tandem running, we captured and analysed 621 invitations, 217 paths and 226 termination events. Remarkably, not a single colony member was lost. While invitations were stereotypic in behaviour, termination was not. Analysis of speed revealed that the average transport speed was 4.2 cm s−1. Coupled adult-brood transport was slower …

Remodeling of Cortical Structural Networks in Multiple Sclerosis

2019

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most frequent immune-mediated disorders of the central nervous system. Pathological events occurring within the white matter and gray matter compartments can be reliably tracked in vivo by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) but conventional imaging parameters do not reflect the remodeling processes of the brain. Here, we sought to investigate the reorganization of cortical structural networks in a group of patients with MS. For this, 40 patients (mean age ± standard deviation 31.2 ± 7.0 years, 14 males) with relapsing-remitting MS and 40 healthy subjects (27.1 ± 5.0 years, 14 males) were included in the study. From T1-weighted MR image-derived cortical th…

A Systematic Review of Cost-effectiveness Evidence of Endoscopic Saphenous Vein Harvesting: Is it Efficient?

2011

Objective: Greater saphenous vein harvest for coronary and lower extremity bypass requires the longest incision of any surgical procedure. Endoscopic vein harvest allows better results in some clinical variables compared to open harvesting techniques. The objec- tive of this study is to present the results of a systematic review of the scientific evidence about the efficiency of endoscopic saphenous vein harvest. Methods: We performed a systematic review in the bibliographical databases Pubmed, National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database, and NHS Health Technology Assess- ment Database. The search strategy was "endoscopic AND harvesting", in the period January 1970eDecember 2009. R…
