Understanding the Dynamic Effect of Contracting Out on the Delivery of Local Public Services

2015

Máñez J., Pérez-López G., Prior D. and Zafra-Gómez J. L. Understanding the dynamic effect of contracting out on the delivery of local public services, Regional Studies. Contracting out is a mechanism through which the delivery of public services can be made more efficient. However, the process has yielded conflicting results. This paper presents a dynamic, mixed approach, incorporating an intertemporal frontier and a matching technique, to measure the short- and long-term effects of the implementation of contracting out on the efficiency of local public service delivery. The study demonstrates the existence of temporary inefficiency arising from the change in service management when contrac…

Low-temperature growth of n ++-GaN by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition to achieve low-resistivity tunnel junctions on blue light emitting diodes

2018

We report on low-resistivity GaN tunnel junctions (TJ) on blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Si-doped n ++-GaN layers are grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition directly on LED epiwafers. Low growth temperature (<800 °C) was used to hinder Mg-passivation by hydrogen in the p ++-GaN top surface. This allows achieving low-resistivity TJs without the need for post-growth Mg activation. TJs are further improved by inserting a 5 nm thick In0.15Ga0.85N interlayer (IL) within the GaN TJ thanks to piezoelectric polarization induced band bending. Eventually, the impact of InGaN IL on the internal quantum efficiency of blue LEDs is discussed.

A discrete pulse group control-based series resonant inverter with complete ZCS-assisted inductors for consumer high frequency IH application

2017

This paper presents a pulse density modulated (PDM) voltage source high frequency series load resonant soft switching inverter (SRI) for the HF induction heated fixing roller in the energy saving copy and printing machines. The proposed simple and high efficiency SRI based on PDM control operation can achieve complete zero current soft switching for wide output power regulation ranges. In this work, its transient and steady-state operating principle are described and analyzed on the basis of high frequency PDM. The operating performances as power conversion efficiency, power losses analysis and temperature rising characteristics of this SRI are demonstrated and discussed through experimenta…

NOX reduction and efficiency improvements by means of the Double Fuel HCCI combustion of natural gas–gasoline mixtures

2016

Abstract Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) and Double Fuel (DF) combustion represent two innovative processes sharing a strong potential for pollutant emissions and fuel consumption reduction. HCCI regards the auto-ignition of a homogeneous premixed charge of air and fuel, featuring very low NOX emissions and good efficiency. Double Fuel (DF) instead indicates the simultaneous combustion of gasoline and natural gas (or gasoline and LPG), premixed with air by the port injection of both fuels within same engine cycle. Since fuel mixtures enhances the HCCI performances widening the range of possible operating conditions, the authors tested the HCCI combustion process using natural…

Metal-free organic dyes with di(1-benzothieno)[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrole as an auxiliary donor for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells: Effect of the mo…

2019

Abstract A series of novel di(1-benzothieno)[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrole (DBTP)-based organic dyes (WL5-10) with D-D-π-A or D-D-A-π-A configurations are designed and the relationship between the properties and molecular configurations of these organic dyes are studied systematically. WL5,7–8 with D-D-π-A configuration incorporating triphenylamine or phenothiazine as donor and DBTP as auxiliary donor and WL9-10 with D-D-A-π-A configuration incorporating benzothiadiazole as an auxiliary acceptor are synthesized to study the effect of the molecular engineering on the photovoltaic performance. WL5,7–8 exhibit similar absorption spectra and high molar extinction coefficient. Especially, the dye WL5 wi…

Dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole-based organic dyes for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells

2014

Four novel D–π–A metal-free organic dyes DTP1–4 containing a dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole (DTPBT) unit were synthesized and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells, where DTPBT was employed as a π-spacer for the first time. The photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of the dyes were systematically investigated. The dyes DTP1–4 showed broad absorption spectra and high molar extinction coefficient, resulting in high light harvesting efficiency. In addition, the impacts of donors and the thiophene unit as an additional π-spacer were also studied. The results showed that the dye DTP4 with triphenylamine as the donor exhibited better photovoltaic performance than DTP1–3 with…

Anti-recombination organic dyes containing dendritic triphenylamine moieties for high open-circuit voltage of DSSCs

2013

Abstract Three novel sensitizers with dendritic triphenylamine moieties were synthesized and used for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Their absorption spectra, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties were extensively investigated. All three DSSCs exhibit high open-circuit voltage over 0.8 V. The photovoltaic results indicate that the dendritic triphenylamine units improve the open-circuit voltage, which is attributed to the retardation of charge recombination, demonstrating that non-planar and larger molecules exert better blocking function. Under standard global AM 1.5 solar conditions, the best performance of the DSSCs exhibits a short-circuit current density of 10.35 mA cm−2, an …

Porphyrin Antenna-Enriched BODIPY–Thiophene Copolymer for Efficient Solar Cells

2018

International audience; Low bandgap A−π–D copolymer, P(BdP-DEHT), consisting of alternating BOronDIPYrromethene (BODIPY) and thiophene units bridged by ethynyl linkers, and its porphyrin-enriched analogue, P(BdP/Por-DEHT), were prepared, and their optical and electrochemical properties were studied. P(BdP-DEHT) exhibits strong absorption in the 500–800 nm range with an optical bandgap of 1.74 eV. On the basis of cyclic voltammetry, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are evaluated to be −5.40 and −3.66 eV, respectively. After the anchoring of zinc(II) porphyrin on the BODIPY unit, P(BdP/Por-DEHT) displays broadened absor…

Efficient Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes: Effect of Composition, Morphology, and Transport Layers

2018

Organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites are emerging as novel materials for light-emitting applications due to their high color purity, band gap tunability, straightforward synthesis, and inexpensive precursors. In this work, we improve the performance of three-dimensional perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) by tuning the emissive layer composition and thickness and by using small-molecule transport layers. Additionally, we correlate PeLED efficiencies to the perovskite structure and morphology. The results show that the PeLEDs containing perovskites with an excess of methylammonium bromide (MABr) to lead bromide (PbBr2) in a 2:1 ratio and a layer thickness of 80 nm have the highes…
