Digital holographic microscopy as a screening technology for diabetes

2019

Label-free quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is the hallmark of digital holographic microscopy (DHM). One of the most interesting medical applications of QPI-DHM is that it can be used to analyze illnesses in which the refractive index or/and the morphology of cells/tissues are distorted, from the acquisition of a single image. In this contribution, we obtain the phase maps of red blood cells (RBCs) samples of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1) by using a DHM. Our experimental results show that the measured phase values are significantly different between control non-diabetic and diabetic patients. The high correlation coefficient between the phase and the glycated hemogl…

Discrete Time Versus Continuous Time Approach to the Autoimmune Response

1989

A discrete time model for the immune regulation recently proposed by Weisbuch and Atlan is extended to continuous coupling coefficients as well as to continuous concentration rates in continuous time. It is shown that depending on the choice of the network parameters typical immune responses can be observed.

A simple model to estimate the daily value of the regional maximum evapotranspiration from satellite temperature and albedo images

1987

Abstract We have tried an adaptation of the radiation model proposed by FAO, applicable in any area, for the estimation of the regional maximum evapotranspiration, ET, from temperature and albedo images obtained from a satellite. This model is based on the relationships ETm = k cETo ETo = A + BR g + CR g Ta max where k c is the crop coefficient, ETo is the maximum evapotranspiration of the reference crop (green grass), Rg is the global radiation obtained from satellite albedo images, T a max is the maximum temperature of the air obtained from the near-midday satellite temperature and A, B and C are the empirical coefficients characteristic of each zone calculated for different intervals of …

Determination of Evapotranspiration and Crop Coefficient of Cactus Pear (Opuntia ficus-indica Mill.) with an Energy Balance Technique

2013

A micrometeorological approach based on surface renewal technique was adopted to estimate evapotranspiration fluxes and crop coefficient data from an irrigated cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica Mill.) orchard under Mediterranean climatic conditions. High-frequency temperature readings were taken above the canopy top in order to get surface renewal sensible heat flux values (HSR). These values were compared against eddy covariance sensible heat fluxes (HEC) for calibration. Latent heat flux (or evapotranspiration, ET) was obtained as the residual of the energy balance equation using HSR. In field measurements of biophysical crop features, physiological characteristic and soil hydraulic compo…

Approaching Economic Inequality through Late Medieval Tax Records: Valls (1378), Sevile (1384) and Palma (1478)

2017

Wealth inequality in pre-industrial societies is a newly reinvigorated topic in economic history. Late medieval historians, particularly those of Iberia, face the challenge to catch up with their early modern counterparts. This proves completely possible due to the existence of analytic methods already developed in economics, as well as tax sources based on patrimony estimates of tax-payers. With the aim of addressing such a topic, this essay analyses three cases coming from various late medieval Iberian populations: Valls (1378), Seville (1384) and Palma (1478). In the case of Valls and Sevile the evidence has been based on transcriptions of available material, while for Palma we have stud…

Simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain in glass fiber/epoxy composites by embedded fiber optic sensors: II. Post-cure testing

2007

In this paper the use of fiber optic sensors embedded into GFRP laminates for structural health monitoring of thermo-mechanical loads is presented. The proposed sensing system, consisting of two coupled fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, allows the simultaneous measurement of both temperature and strain by decoupling the change in reflected wavelength induced by temperature variations from that induced by either mechanical or apparent strain, with significant advantages either for monitoring the composite cure kinetics, as described in the accompanying paper (Part I), or for assessing the structural response to thermo-mechanical loads. Both thermal ramp and mechanical static/dynamic bending…

Segmentation Integrating Watershed and Shape Priors Applied to Cardiac Delayed Enhancement MR Images

2017

International audience; Background: In recent years, there has been a rapid rise in the use of shape priors applied to segmentation process of medical images. Previous approaches on left ventricle segmentation from Delayed-Enhancement Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DE-MRI) have focused on the extraction of myocardium or just diseased region in short axis orientation. However these studies did not take into account the segmentation of non-diseased myocardium from DE-MRI. The segmentation of non-diseased myocardium from DE-MRI, has some useful applications. For instance it can simplify the PET-MR registration process. Methods: This paper presents a novel semi-automatic segmentation method of non-…

Quantification of Listeria monocytogenes in salads by real time quantitative PCR

2005

Abstract A real time quantitative PCR (RTQ-PCR) was carried out purifying DNA extracts of Listeria monocytogenes using a High Pure Listeria Sample Preparation Kit and quantifying in a LightCycler system with hybridisation probes. A standard curve was constructed with serial dilutions. A range linear relationship, from 10 to 10 5 L. monocytogenes colony forming units (CFU), was observed between threshold cycle ( C t ) and logarithmic concentration of the serial dilutions. The assay was linear in a range from 10 to 10 5 L. monocytogenes CFU and the coefficient of determination ( r 2 ) was > 0.98. RTQ-PCR presented an efficiency of > 85%. The accuracy of the PCR-based assay, expressed as % bia…

Real-time quantitative PCR of Staphylococcus aureus and application in restaurant meals.

2006

Staphylococcus aureus is considered the second most common pathogen to cause outbreaks of food poisoning, exceeded only by Campylobacter. Consumption of foods containing this microorganism is often identified as the cause of illness. In this study, a rapid, reliable, and sensitive real-time quantitative PCR was developed and compared with conventional culture methods. Real-time quantitative PCR was carried out by purifying DNA extracts of S. aureus with a Staphylococcus sample preparation kit and quantifying it in the LightCycler system with hybridization probes. The assay was linear from a range of 10 to 10(6) S. aureus cells (r2 > 0.997). The PCR reaction presented an efficiency of >85%. …

s-wave charmed baryon resonances from a coupled-channel approach with heavy quark symmetry

2009

We study charmed baryon resonances which are generated dynamically within a unitary meson-baryon coupled channel model that treats the heavy pseudoscalar and vector mesons on equal footing as required by heavy-quark symmetry. It is an extension of recent SU(4) models with t-channel vector meson exchanges to a SU(8) spin-flavor scheme, but differs considerably from the SU(4) approach in how the strong breaking of the flavor symmetry is implemented. Some of our dynamically generated states can be readily assigned to recently observed baryon resonances, while others do not have a straightforward identification and require the compilation of more data as well as an extension of the model to d-w…
