Histologic and histomorphometric assessment of eggshell-derived bone graft substitutes on bone healing in rats
2013
Objective: The objective of this study was to histologically and histomorphometrically evaluate the efficacy of the new formulations of eggshell-derived calcium carbonate in rats. Study Design: The study was conducted on 30 adult male rats. Four standardized and circular intrabony defects were created in the both maxilla and mandibula of each animal. Three different graft materials were prepared as follows: 1) Material A: Eggshell-derived calcium carbonate combined with carrageenan gel, 2) Material B: Eggshell-derived calcium carbonate combined with xanthan gum gel, and 3) Material C: Eggshell-derived calcium carbonate powder. The right mandibular defect sites were grafted with Material A i…
Fluke egg characteristics for the diagnosis of human and animal fascioliasis by Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica
2009
In trematodiases, shape and size of the fluke eggs shed with faeces are crucial diagnostic features because of their typically reduced intraspecific variability. In fascioliasis, the usual diagnosis during the biliary stage of infection is based on the classification of eggs found in stools, duodenal contents or bile. The aim of the present study is to validate the identification of Fasciola species based on the shape and size of eggs shed by humans, characterizing their morphometric traits using a computer image analysis system (CIAS). The influence of both the geographical location and of the host (human and livestock) has been analysed. Coprological studies were carried out in fasciolias…
A population-based coprological study of human fascioliasis in a hyperendemic area of the Bolivian Altiplano
1997
The community of Chijipata Alta, at an altitude of 3850 m, near the southern coast of Lake Titicaca in the Northern Altiplano of Bolivia, was surveyed for human fascioliasis. The global prevalence (66.7 %) and intensity (eggs per gram of faeces - epg: range: 24-4440; arithmetic mean: IooI; geometric mean: 390) proved to be the highest known in the world by means of coprological techniques. These results suggest the existence of highly hyperendemic subzones among the large human fascioliasis-endemic zone of the Bolivian Northern Altiplano. Despite the decrease in prevalence and intensity from children (75.0%, 24-4440 epg) to adults (41.7%, 144-864 epg), our findings show that in an hyperende…
Soil-transmitted helminth infections at very high altitude in Bolivia
2001
A cross-sectional study of soil-transmitted helminthiases in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano was carried out over the 6-year period 1992-97. Prevalences, intensities and associations were analysed from coprological results obtained in 31 surveys (28 in schools and 3 in individuals of all age-groups) performed in 24 Aymara communities located between the city of La Paz and Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 3800-4200 m. Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura were detected, with local prevalences in the range 1.2-28.0% and 0.0-24.0%, respectively. Significant differences in prevalence rates of trichuriasis were detected, with highest prevalences in male schoolchildren and in subjects aged…
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in foods from the Region of Valencia: Dietary exposure and risk assessment
2019
Abstract Dietary exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) of the population in the Region of Valencia, Spain, was assessed. A group of 320 composite samples of different fatty foods was collected and analyzed, including the following: vegetable oils, and foods of animal origin such as (a) fish and seafood, (b) eggs, (c) milk and dairy products, and (d) meat and meat products. Two scenarios were assumed for left-censored results: lower-bound (LB) and upper-bound (UB). Vegetable oils, and fish and seafood presented the highest content of PBDEs [mean values of 503 and 464 pg g−1 wet weight (ww) for total PBDEs, respectively, in the UB]. The dominating congeners were BDE47 in the food…
Multi-analyte method for the analysis of legacy and alternative brominated and chlorinated flame retardants in food products of animal origin using g…
2019
Abstract An analytical method was developed and validated for the analysis of 32 halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), including 13 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 9 dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs) and 10 of the so-called alternative BFRs in food samples of animal origin. Gas chromatography (GC) coupled with magnetic sector high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was used for the instrumental analysis. Intralaboratory validation of the developed method was performed in terms of recovery, repeatability, linear calibration ranges, instrumental and method limits of quantitation (i-LOQ and m-LOQ). Where possible, trueness was verified by the analysis of reference materials (RMs). Fo…
Hookworm-like eggs in children’s faecal samples from a rural area of Rwanda
2016
Background: Hookworm eggs identification and quantification is usually carried out by Kato-Katz method. However various structures present in the smear may be confused with eggs of such parasites. Objective: To document the presence of structures in Kato-Katz slides that could initially be misinterpreted as hookworm eggs. Method: 497 faecal samples were analysed by Kato-Katz technique, diphasic concentration technique, agar-plate coprocultive and larvae obtained were analysed by PCR and characterized by sequencing. Result: Hookworm-like eggs were found in 159 (32%) of the samples by Kato Katz, finally identified as Caenorhabditis elegans by PCR technique. Conclusion: The diagnosis of human …
Verifisering av jordskjelvkapasitet av eksisterende bygg i henhold til Eurokode 8 : En studie om jordskjelvanalyse av eksisterende murbygg
2019
Masteroppgave bygg BYG508 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 This master thesis is written in collaboration with Multiconsult and University of Agder. Earthquake design is a new field of study in Norway, and over the past decade it has become a part of rule and regulations to be considered during construction. This includes both new structures andrenovation of existing buildings. Thismayfor the construction companies require extra resources and difficulties, both economic wise and if there is lack of knowledge in earthquake design among their employees. In addition, the Eurocode 8-3is currently only available in English version. The aimof this thesis has been to create a simplified flowchart in a…
Etteroppspenning av plattendekke
2021
Master's thesis in Civil and structural engineering (BYG508) In this master thesis, the use of post-tensioned lattice girder slabs has been investigated. By use of non-prestressed or pre-tensioned reinforcement, the usual span-width of lattice girder slabs are from 7 to 10.5 meters. In cases where parts of a floor system requires span-widths larger than10.5 m, lattice girder slabs will either not be used or supplemented with other types of concrete slabs. The latter can complicate matters as the thickness and properties will differ from the surrounding lattice girder slabs. It has thus been examined whether use of post-tensioning could increase this span-width, as well as how it will be dime…
Modelling heat diffusion in concrete structures during a tunnel fire, to investigate structural safety
2019
Master's Thesis Civil and Constructional Engineering BYG508 - University of Agder 2019 Thisismymaster’s thesis for my master’s degree in civil engineering. In this study, the heat diffusion in concrete structures during a tunnel fire is investigated. The available literature on the heat diffusion of the ISO 834, EUREKA 60, 90 and 120, HC and RWS fire curve have been investigated and compared. The fire curves are also modelled in the software ANSYS, where different approaches have been simulated, and temperature profiles have been established. The different analyseshavebeen developed and performed from a literature study, watching tutorials online and through meetings with experts. The importan…
