Presence of very high prevalence and intensity of infection with Fasciola hepatica among Aymara children from the Northern Bolivian Altiplano.
1997
Abstract Coprological studies of school children from four communities in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano were carried out in order to estimate the prevalences and intensities of Fasciola hepatica infection. Single stool specimens were collected at random from 558 school children (308 boys and 250 girls) aged 5–19 years old. Nineteen different parasite species (13 protozoan and six helminths) were detected. Of the children examined, 98.7% (96.5–100%) presented infection with at least one parasite species. The mean prevalence of 27.6% by Fasciola hepatica (range, 5.9–38.2%) was the highest not only with respect to the helminth species found in the Northern Bolivian Altiplano but also among t…
Integrated project delivery (IPD) in Norwegian construction projects : Sharing of risk and opportunities aiming at better cooperation and project ach…
2018
Master's thesis Industrial Economics and Technology Management IND590 - University of Agder 2018 In the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry projects are often temporary in nature and are often characterised as PBO project-based organisations. Each project chooses a number of strategies which makes up a project development model. Traditionally models have focused on transactional contracting between actors in the value chain which opens up the way, for sub-optimisation and risk aversion as the common challenges. In such circumstances, each actor has a different perception of the aim and the success of the project, and so try to find ways to take the lowest risk and gain…
An evaluation of VDC in road maintenance projects -The professionals view on the benefits and barriers of VDC in road maintenance
2018
Master's thesis Industrial Economics and Technology Management IND590 - University of Agder 2018 Purpose: Give an overview of VDC in relation to road maintenance projects and make it easier for companies to decide if VDC is worth investing in. Goal: 1) To find out if there are any differences in the definition and understanding of VDC in the Norwegian market, compared to the definition provided by the CIFE (Center for Integrated Facility Engineering at Stanford University). 2) To identify frequent problems in road maintenance that VDC could solve. 3) To identify the obstacles standing in the way of the use of VDC in road maintenance and to figure out why it has not been adopted in road main…
Echinostoma friedi: the effect of age of adult worms on the infectivity of miracidia.
2004
AbstractThe effect of ageing of adults ofEchinostoma friedi(Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) on the infectivity of miracidia yielded was analysed. Miracidia were obtained after hatching of eggs obtained from adult worms ofE. friedicollected weekly during the course of experimental infections in golden hamsters. Miracidial infectivity, measured in terms of percentage of infection inLymnaea peregra, was significantly influenced by the age of the adult worms from which the miracidia were derived. Infective miracidia only were obtained from adult worms in the age range from 4 to 9 weeks post-infection. Infectivity was maximal in those miracidia derived from adults collected 8 and 9 weeks post-infec…
Toxicity of lindane, atrazine, and deltamethrin to early life stages of zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio).
1990
Fertilized eggs of zebrafish were exposed under flow-through conditions to several concentrations of the following pesticides: lindane 40, 80, 110, 130, and 150 micrograms/liter; atrazine 300, 1300, and 9100 micrograms/liter; deltamethrin 0.5, 0.8, and 1.2 micrograms/liter. Hatching, abnormalities in development (external deformations, edema, etc.), and mortality were recorded over a period of 35 days. At the end of the experiment, the body lengths of the fish were measured. Survival of juvenile fish after 35 days was reduced by increasing concentrations of all xenobiotics tested: lindane enhanced the mortality from 110 micrograms/liter and atrazine from 1300 micrograms/liter, and deltameth…
Empirical calibration of the clumped isotope paleothermometer using calcites of various origins
2014
We present the first universal calibration of the clumped isotope thermometer for calcites of various mineralizing types. These are an eggshell of an ostrich, a tropical bivalve, a brachiopod shell, cold seep carbonate, and three foraminifera samples that grew between 9 and 38 C. CaCO3 was digested at 90 C using a common acid bath. Considering a difference in phosphoric acid fractionation factors between reaction at 25 and 90 C of 0.069& (Guo et al., 2009), the function between growth temperature T and the excess of 13 C– 18 O bonds in the evolved CO2 is expressed by a linear regression between 1/T 2 and absolute D47 (R 2 = 0.9915):
7-Ketocholesterol as marker of cholesterol oxidation in model and food systems: when and how.
2014
Cholesterol can undergo oxidation through enzymatic or chemical mechanisms, generating a wide range of oxidation products (COPs) with adverse biological effects. COPs are characterized by different functional groups and are produced in different ratios or amounts, depending on the treatment and storage conditions. To follow the cholesterol oxidation process, 7-ketocholesterol (7-KC) has been often used as an oxidation marker in both model and food systems, since it is easily formed and is one of the most representative ring COPs. However, 7-KC does not always rise with increasing time/temperature conditions, especially in complex systems and high-protein or extensively processed foods. The …
Centrifugation does not alter spatial distribution of `BEP4' mRNA in paracentrotus lividus EGG
1997
AbstractParacentrotus lividus unfertilized eggs were centrifuged in a sucrose gradient, so to split each into two parts: a nucleated light fragment and an anucleated heavy fragment. Northern blot analyses utilizing a bep4 probe as animal marker and H2A histone gene and 12S-mit RNA as controls indicate that the eggs are elongated along the animal-vegetal axis during centrifugation and thereafter split into an animal and a vegetal half. Treatment of the eggs with colchicine before centrifugation abolishes the animal localization of bep4 mRNA.
Replacing red meat and processed red meat for white meat, fish, legumes or eggs is associated with lower risk of incidence of metabolic syndrome.
2016
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Few studies have assessed the association between consumption of red meat (RM) and processed red meats (PRM) and the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and results have been inconsistent. We investigated associations between total consumption of meat and its subtypes and incident MetS and estimated the effect of substituting RM or PRM for alternative protein-rich foods. METHODS: We analyzed 1868 participants (55-80 years-old) recruited into the PREDIMED study who had no MetS at baseline and were followed for a median of 3.2 years. MetS was defined using updated harmonized criteria. Anthropometric variables, dietary habits, and blood biochemistry were determined at bas…
