A synthesis of deimatic behaviour

Deimatic behaviours, also referred to as startle behaviours, are used against predators and rivals. Although many are spectacular, their proximate and ultimate causes remain unclear. In this review we aim to synthesise what is known about deimatic behaviour and identify knowledge gaps. We propose a working hypothesis for deimatic behaviour, and discuss the available evidence for the evolution, ontogeny, causation, and survival value of deimatic behaviour using Tinbergen's Four Questions as a framework. Our overarching aim is to direct future research by suggesting ways to address the most pressing questions in this field. peerReviewed

Maģistra darba mērķis ir noskaidrot 12.Saeimas deputātu viedokļus par nacionālo mediju varu nacionālā līmeņa politiskās dienaskārtības notiekšanas procesā. Parlamenta deputātu viedokļu pētījumos Zviedrijā un Beļģijā tika secināts, ka masu mediji ir vieni no ietekmīgākajiem politiskās dienaskārtības noteicējiem līdzās premjerministram un politiskajām partijām. Iedvesmojoties no iepriekšējos pētījumos paustajām atziņām, tika īstenots Saeimas deputātu pētījums, atklājot parlamentāriešu viedokļus par masu mediju varu uz nacionālā līmeņa dienaskārtības noteikšanu. Parental Teaching of Reading and Spelling Across the Transition From Kindergarten to Grade 1

We investigated the longitudinal links between parental teaching of reading and spelling and children’s word reading and spelling skills. Data of 244 Lithuanian parent–child dyads were analyzed, who were followed across three time points: end of kindergarten (T1; Mage = 6.88; 116 girls), beginning of Grade 1 (T2), and end of Grade 1 (T3). The children’s word reading and spelling skills were tested, and the parents answered questionnaires on the frequency with which they taught their children reading and spelling. Die Juristendiskurse haben uns viel über ihre Zeit zu sagen, und insbesondere über die Weimarer Zeit. Deutlich wird es am Fall Gustav Radbruchs (1878-1949), der nicht nur Rechtsphilosoph und Professor war, sondern auch Sozialdemokrat und Verteidiger der Republik. Von seinem Beispiel ausgehend wird hier der Frage nachgegangen, was es wohl bedeutete, in dieser Krisenzeit ein „linker Jurist“ zu sein. Dazu werden drei wesentliche Aspekte untersucht: die Vereinbarkeit von Theorie und Praxis, die Legitimation der Demokratie und die Kritik des individualistischen und liberalen Denkens.
