Il trionfo della morte di Palermo. Un'allegoria della modernità

2017

'[I]t wasn’t in the picture and is not': Blind Spots and Vanishing Points in Irish Poetical Self-Portraits

2016

International audience; Pictoriality and a propensity for self-examination and self-representation are characteristic of the poetry of Louis MacNeice, Derek Mahon, Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon. In many a poem, these four contemporary Irish poets try to capture their own portraits in words and images, through highly visual poems often inspired by paintings. This paper first examines how these poets use images and invest paintings, how verbal and iconic texts interact in their creations and to what extent self-exegesis is made possible and more successful through ekphrasis. With reference to Jacques Derrida’s essay on self-portraiture—Memoirs of the Blind: Self-Portraits and Other Ruins—thi…

Ekfrasen som begivenhet

2021

Creating images / Feigning objects. Dialogues between the artistic projects of Isidro Ferrer, Sean Mackaoui & Chema Mado

2013

[EN] As a tribute to the opening of a new exhibition space, the present text traces the common thread that links together three contemporary artists, active in the Spanish context —Chema Madoz, Sean Mackaoui and Isidro Ferrer— tightly linked all of them to visual poetry, from photography, collage and objects. Close existing connections between images and texts, according to the double direction which, on the one hand, creatively relate texts with images (hypotyposis) are also studied and, on the other hand, descriptively linked images with texts (ekphrasis). Both strategies are two fundamental ways for the explanation and interdisciplinary interpretation from the current aesthetics, referri…

2012

Author's version of an article in the journal: Edda. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/edda/2012/02/om_aa_baere_doedens_tyngde_-_fotografier_og_visuelle_fortelles Himmelarkivet (2008) by Gaute Heivoll is part of an international trend of fiction concerned with traumatic events from World War II reflecting on the question of how these events should be described and understood. One main narrative device in the work is the use of image-related elements, and the goal of this article is to interpret their significance and effect. On the one hand, the argument is that they work as documents confirming the authenticity of the narrative and, on the other, that these visua…

IMAGINED REBELLION: WHAT DOESN'T HAPPEN IN THE WINTER'S TALE

2014

International audience; Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale features a pattern of violent rebellion that only just fails to happen. Such moments of near-rebellion, best interpreted through the play's master trope of the moving statue, constitute an exploration of the causes of political rebellion and how best to avert it. Thanks to the close integration of its romance aesthetics and political realism, The Winter's Tale can be read as a "Mirror for Kings".
