ENGAGE: Development of actions to (re)engage institutionalized older people in the meals

2020

Eating in nursing home implies a redefinition of the meal, from the point of view of the nursing staff which are subjected to specific constraints connected to hygiene and nutritional frame, but also from the point of view of the residents who are subjected to the medicalization of food consumption, to the changes of practices and to the redefining of the commensality. In their survey carried out in nursing homes with in-house kitchen, the sociologist P. Cardon and the anthropologist E. Souternon observed that the institution’s kitchen was often perceived as a “black-box” by the residents.A first step of the project consisted in carrying out semi-directive interviews with older people livin…

Inter-individual differences in human saliva composition affect the partition of food and beverages aroma compounds

2016

Saliva is the first biological fluid in contact with food during consumption. As such, it might exert an important role on the release of volatile compounds from foods into the oral cavity. Thus, understanding this role could help to explain aroma perception, food preferences and dietary intake in human. To date, most of the studies performed on the field have employed compositionally simple artificial salivas or pools mixing human salivas from different individuals. Nevertheless, the whole complexity of human saliva and the effect of interindividual differences on aroma release remains underexplored. Therefore, there is a need to gain a better understanding of the effect of human saliva co…

Does oral health people imparirments modify bolus formation, bolus characteristics and food comfortability of meat products?

2018

International audience; Ageing is often accompanied by oral impairments like tooth loss or decrease saliva flow that play a key role in eating behavior. In the context of aging population, the aim of this study is 1- to understand the influence of dental status and salivary flow on the meat bolus formation and characteristics in function of meat structure, 2- to investigate the link between the food bolus properties and the food comfortability (as defined by (Vandenbergue-Descamps et al., 2017)) during meat consumption. This was achieved by asking elderly people (n=65) with good oral health (17H, 16F, age=73±6, UFP n=8±1) or poor oral health (15H, 17F, age=75±6, UFP n=3±1) to consume 4 meat…

Hypofractionnated radiotherapy for elderly patients with prostate cancer

2018

Radiation therapy technique and schedules could be adapted to patient's age because of a natural history of prostate cancer perceived as different, taking into account the comorbidities of patients but also a particular tolerance of elderly subjects. Thus, in localized prostate cancer, evaluation of associated diseases is essential before considering a treatment that will be of interest only if the life expectancy is greater than 10 years. When a curative approach is decided, radiotherapy holds a place of choice. Due to the recent results of randomized studies evaluating moderate hypofractionnated radiotherapy, showing a carcinological equivalence compared to a standard fractionation, this …

Do Women and Men over 70 Years Old Similarly Benefit from a One-Year Training Program?

2010

Background and Aims : Exercise capacity declines with age and is improved with exercise training. The aim of this study was to characterize the effects of a one-year combined exercise training in subjects over 70 years old, and to examine the eventual differences obtained between men and women. Methods : After baseline evaluation, 24 subjects (12 men and 12 women) over 70 years old underwent moderate intensity training with aerobic and resistance exercises, 3 hours a week over one year. Workload, oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate were measured during a symptom-limited exercise test. The distance walked in 6 minutes (6-MWT) was also registered, and the maximal strength was measured on knee …

Psychomotor disadaptation syndrome

2020

Psychomotor disadaptation syndrome (PDS) was first described by the Geriatrics School of Dijon (France), three decades ago, under the name «psychomotor regression syndrome». Over time, the original clinical features remained unchanged. However, progress has been made in its pathophysiology understanding and care, hence the new name, PDS, appeared in the 1990s. The PDS is also called sub-cortico-frontal dysfunction syndrome since the 2000s. It corresponds to a decompensation of posture, gait and psychomotor automatisms, related to an alteration of the postural and motor programming, which is a consequence of sub-cortico-frontal lesions. The clinical features of PDS associate backward disequi…
