Effect of Corona Poling and Thermo Cycling Sequence on NLO Properties of The Guest-Host System

2008

In the case of doped polymer system SHG efficiency is proportional to the concentration and orientation degree of NLO-active molecules. Unfortunately, corona poling realised at elevated temperatures causes concentration decrease of NLO-active molecules due to crystallization. On the basis of our studies of the film optical images, refractive index and SHG measurements of the dimethylaminobenzylidene 1,3-indandione and PMMA guest-host system, we have demonstrated that optical quality is improved and second order NLO efficiency is higher, when the external poling electric field is switched on from the very beginning of the sample heating process.

Poling dynamics of an EO active material using parallel-plate electrodes

2017

We describe the sample preparation and experimental setup for second harmonic generation measurement of electro-optical (EO) chromophore/polymer system at the time of contact-poling. Different types of spacers for avoiding electric breakdown due to avalanche multiplication are compared. Electric field threshold values for second harmonic generation are observed in all samples.

Reversible tuning of a block-copolymer nanostructure via electric fields

2007

Block copolymers consisting of incompatible components self-assemble into microphase-separated domains yielding highly regular structures with characteristic length scales of the order of several tens of nanometres. Therefore, in the past decades, block copolymers have gained considerable potential for nanotechnological applications, such as in nanostructured networks and membranes, nanoparticle templates and high-density data storage media. However, the characteristic size of the resulting structures is usually determined by molecular parameters of the constituent polymer molecules and cannot easily be adjusted on demand. Here, we show that electric d.c. fields can be used to tune the char…

Dielectrophoresis as a tool for nanoscale DNA manipulation

2005

The use of the dielectrophoresis as a tool for DNA manipulation is demonstrated experimentally, using both unmodified 48,500 base pairs long bacteriophage lambda dsDNA (λ-DNA), ∼16 μm in length and 414 base pairs long thiol modified natural dsDNA (avDNA), ∼140 nm in length. We show that both the dsDNA types used, are effectively directed between the planar gold electrodes by the positive dielectrophoresis while applying an AC voltage at frequencies between 500 kHz and 1 MHz. With high concentrations of dsDNA in buffer the attached dsDNA molecules are shown to form bundles or clumps (both λ-DNA and avDNA). Furthermore, we demonstrate the attaching of a single avDNA molecule to an electrode v…

Large-area dielectric breakdown performance of polymer films

2015

In this study, large-area dielectric breakdown performances of various bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP)-silica nanocomposite films are studied by utilizing the self-healing multi-breakdown method presented in the Part I of this publication. In particular, the effects of silica filler content, pre-mixing method, co-stabilizer content and film processing on the large-area breakdown performance are analyzed. Nanostructural and film cross-sectional analyses are correlated to the breakdown responses. The optimum silica filler content is found to reside at the low fill fraction level (~1 wt-%) and automatic pre-mixing of the raw materials and the optimization of the orientation temperatur…

Effect of pulsed electric field on Maillard reaction and hydroxymethylfurfural production

2020

Abstract As an emerging nonthermal processing technology, the application of pulsed electric field (PEF) has received increasing attention not only for its capability to inactivate enzymes and microorganisms or to enhance mass transfer during the extraction process but also for its potential to inhibit the formation of chemical contaminants during processing, such as the formation of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). HMF is a potential carcinogen to humans that can be produced via the Maillard reaction (MR). Compared with thermal treatment, PEF can minimize the extent of MR, reducing the contents of HMF. However, in some cases, MR and HMR may be promoted, closely associated with PEF conditions a…

Information Dynamics of Electric Field Intensity before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

2022

This work investigates the temporal statistical structure of time series of electric field (EF) intensity recorded with the aim of exploring the dynamical patterns associated with periods with different human activity in urban areas. The analyzed time series were obtained from a sensor of the EMF RATEL monitoring system installed in the campus area of the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. The sensor performs wideband cumulative EF intensity monitoring of all active commercial EF sources, thus including those linked to human utilization of wireless communication systems. Monitoring was performed continuously during the years 2019 and 2020, allowing us to investigate the effects on the patterns…

A new phase in ferroelectric oxides: The phase of charge transfer vibronic excitons

2001

It is shown, by means of Hartree-Fock-type calculations using the intermediate neglect of the differential overlap (INDO) method, that polaronic-type charge transfer vibronic excitons (CTVE) in ferroelectric oxides could lead to the formation of a new phase. The ground-state energy of this phase of strongly correlated CTVE lies within an optical gap of pure crystal, and is characterized by a strong tetragonal lattice distortion, as well as ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic ordering. It is shown also that clusters of the CTVE phase being stabilized by oxygen vacancies could be responsible for the unusually strong optical Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) in nominally pure incipient ferroele…

Two‐Dimensional Electron Gas Effects on the Photoluminescence from a Nonintentionally Doped AlGaN/GaN Heterojunction

2002

Photoluminescence measurements on an AlGaN/GaN single heterojunction (SH), where piezoelectric and spontaneous polarization effects confine a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), are presented. Well-defined emissions between the bulk excitonic transitions and their LO-phonon replica are attributed to spatially indirect excitons located close to the interface. The strong interfacial electric field separates photogenerated holes and electrons, weakening their Coulomb interaction and causing a blueshift with increasing excitation intensity due to carrier population effects. In addition, direct experimental proof is obtained by applying an electric field normal to the interface. An energy shift…
