The Heart in Fabry Disease – from Pathogenesis to Enzyme Replacement Therapy

2010

The cardiovascular involvement in Fabry disease is progressive, and accounts for one of the major reasons for abbreviated life expectancy and increased morbidity. The majority of patients develop signs and symptoms, related to heart failure and arrhythmias. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, in later stages combined with myocardial fibrosis, is one of the leading features. Both genders are affected, and females develop severe cardiac Fabry disease approximately 10–15 years later in life than male patients. Diastolic dysfunction and reduced longitudinal mid-wall related systolic function are the mechanical consequences of the myocardial and epithelial changes related to accumulation of the storage…

Physical exercise and sarcopenia in older people: position paper of the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Medicine (OrtoMed)

2015

Sarcopenia is the age-associated loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. It is a major clinical problem for older people and research in understanding of pathogenesis, clinical consequences, management, and socioeconomic burden of this condition is growing exponentially. The causes of sarcopenia are multifactorial, including inflammation, insulin resistance, changing endocrine function, chronic diseases, nutritional deficiencies and low levels of physical activity. Operational definition of sarcopenia combines assessment of muscle mass, muscle strength and physical performance. The diagnosis of sarcopenia should be based on having a low appendicular fat free mass in combination with low …

Right/Left Ventricular Blood Pool T2 Ratio as an Innovative Cardiac MRI Screening Tool for the Identification of Left‐to‐Right Shunts in Patients Wit…

2021

Background Left-to-right (L-R) shunts are characterized by a pathological connection between high- and low-pressure systems, leading to a mixing of oxygen-rich blood with low oxygenated blood. They are typically diagnosed by phase-contrast cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which requires extensive planning. T2 is sensitive to blood oxygenation and may be able to detect oxygenation differences between the left (LV) and right ventricles (RV) caused by L-R shunts. Purpose To test the feasibility of routine T2 mapping to detect L-R shunts. Study type Retrospective. Population Patients with known L-R shunts (N = 27), patients with RV disease without L-R shunts (N = 21), and healthy volunt…

Modelling cardiac mechanics of left ventricular noncompaction

2020

Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) can be defined as a cardiomyopathy characterised by a pattern of prominent trabecular structure and deep intertrabecular recesses, that is thought to be caused by an arrest of normal endomyocardial morphogenesis. Using patient-specific computational modelling, we assessed the cardiac mechanics of five patients with LVNC and compared myocardial stress and pump performance to those of healthy controls. Findings shown that patients with LVNC have impaired left ventricular (LV) function, making it possible that the lack of fibre shortening of noncompacted layer can determine poor heart function. Pronounced end-systolic wall stress on left ventricular wall o…

Early cortical processing of vection-inducing visual stimulation as measured by event-related brain potentials (ERP)

2019

Abstract Visual motion stimuli can induce the perception of self-motion in stationary observers (known as vection). In the present study, we investigated the sensory processing underlying vection by measuring the human event-related brain potentials (ERPs) elicited by the movement onset of a visual stimulus. We presented participants a visual stimulus consisting of alternating black-and-white vertical bars that moved in horizontal direction, creating the sensation of vection. The stimulus was presented on a screen that was divided into a central and a surrounding peripheral visual area. Both areas moved independently from each other, resulting in four different movement patterns: the periph…

Resting sympatho-vagal balance is related to 10 km running performance in master endurance athletes

2018

Relationships between heart rate recovery after exercise (HRR, baseline heart rate variability measures (HRV), and time to perform a 10Km running trial (t10Km) were evaluated in "master" athletes of endurance to assess whether the measured indexes may be useful for monitoring the training status of the athletes. Ten “master” athletes of endurance, aged 40-60 years, were recruited. After baseline measures of HRV, the athletes performed a graded maximal test on treadmill and HRR was measured at 1 and 2 minutes from recovery. Subsequently they performed a 10Km running trial and t10Km was related to HRV and HRR indexes. The time to perform a 10Km running trial was significantly correlated with …

Predictors of visually induced motion sickness in women

2019

Abstract Background Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is commonly experienced when visual motion information is in conflict with motion information provided by the vestibular system and/or tactile and kinesthetic senses. According to some studies, women experience higher levels of VIMS than men, whereas other studies do not find this to be the case. Hypothesis This study investigated whether gender differences can be attributed to changes in VIMS-susceptibility due to the menstrual cycle and perceived menstrual pain. We hypothesized that higher perceived menstrual pain correlates positively with VIMS susceptibility. Methods We measured the influence of estimated concentrations of four…

The impact of modern jazz dance on the electrical brain activity

2018

AbstractDance as one of the earliest cultural assets of mankind is practised in different cultures, mostly for wellbeing or for treating psycho-physiological disorders like Parkinson, depression, autism. However, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are still unclear and only few studies address the effects of particular dance styles. For a first impression, we were interested in the effects of modern jazz dance (MJD) on the brain activation that would contribute to the understanding of these mechanisms. 11 female subjects rehearsed a MJD choreography for three weeks (1h per week) and passed electroencephalographic (EEG) measurements in a crossover-design thereafter. The objectives …

Zonal Segmentation of Prostate T2W-MRI using Atrous Convolutional Neural Network

2019

The number of prostate cancer cases is steadily increasing especially with rising number of ageing population. It is reported that 5-year relative survival rate for man with stage 1 prostate cancer is almost 99% hence, early detection will significantly improve treatment planning and increase survival rate. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique is a common imaging modality for diagnosis of prostate cancer. MRI provide good visualization of soft tissue and enable better lesion detection and staging of prostate cancer. The main challenge of prostate whole gland segmentation is due to blurry boundary of central gland (CG) and peripheral zone (PZ) which lead to differential diagnosis. Sinc…
