Thermal potential of ion-exchange membranes and its application to thermoelectric power generation

2016

The low efficiency and high price of thermoelectric semiconductors has generated interest in unconventional forms of thermoelectric materials. In this article, ionic thermoelectricity has been studied with commercial ion-exchange membranes for different aqueous 1:1 electrolytes. The theory of thermal membrane potential has been derived taking into account the ionic heats of transport, the non-isothermal Donnan potentials, the temperature polarization, and the thermally-induced concentration polarization of the electrolyte. Also the generated thermoelectric power has been experimentally studied. The experiments show good agreement with the theory, and suggest ways for systematic improvement …

Electrochemical dating of archaeological gold based on refined peak current determinations and Tafel analysis

2020

Abstract This report proposes a refined method to date archaeological gold samples based on the Tafel analysis of the ascending part of voltammetric curves corresponding to the oxidation of surface flakes of gold in contact with hydrochloric acid aqueous electrolyte. This allows estimating the equilibrium potential of gold oxidation correcting for irreversibility effects. This equilibrium potential can be correlated with the coverage of adsorbed oxygen species and hence the estimated age of the gold samples. A satisfactory potential/time calibration graph was constructed from a set of archaeological samples including two sets of samples from the Mapungubwe Gold Collection, South Africa (120…

Ni-Fe alloy nanostructured electrodes for water splitting in alkaline electrolyser

2021

Abstract In this work, nickel-iron alloy nanostructured electrodes obtained by template electrosynthesis method are investigated for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Electrodes consist of nanowire arrays with high surface area that are able to ensures a high electrolytic activity. To obtain different alloy compositions, the concentration of the elements in the deposition baths is appropriately tuned. Results show that the composition of nanowires does not change linearly with the composition of deposition bath but are richer in Fe. Nanostructured electrodes are tested as both cathodes and anodes in 30 wt% KOH aqueous solution, at room temperature to determine the best alloy com…

Initial Preparation and Characterization of Single Step Fabricated Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFC)

2013

In this study, facile tape casting process has been successfully carried out to fabricate an unit anode supported intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) with four different layers: a composite cathode which is a mix of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF48) and Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.9 (GDC10), GDC10 as thin electrolyte layer, NiO-GDC10 without pore former as thin anode functional layer (AFL), and anode support layer of NiO-GDC10 with carbon pore former. The multi-layer was sintered once to produce an unit planar cell. An OCV of 1.002 V at 500 °C, and maximum power density of 466 mW cm–2 at 648 °C are obtained. These results indicate negligible leakage of fuel through electrolyte. Furtherm…

Solution properties of polyelectrolytes—V. Viscometric study of mixed polyanions in pure water

1990

Abstract A viscometric study of sodium polystyrene sulphonate (NaPSS) and sodium poly( l -glutamate) (NaPLG) in salt-free water has been carried out as a function of the total concentration, cm, and the concentration of one polyelectrolyte at fixed concentration of the other. The influences of the molecular weight and concentration are considered in order to establish the degree of compatibility. For the first time, an equation is proposed to define the reduced viscosity of the NaPSS + NaPLG mixture in water. The viscometric interaction parameter, Bm, taking into account the electrostatic and thermodynamic interactions between both polyions, is defined as a geometrical mean of the contribut…

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria for 1-propanol + water + lithium chloride at 100 kPa

2004

Abstract Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria for the ternary system 1-propanol+water+lithium chloride has been measured at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The addition of lithium chloride to the solvent mixture produced an important salting-out effect over the alcohol and the azeotrope tended to be eliminated when the salt content increased, and two immiscible liquid phases were observed in a broad range of salt concentration. The experimental data sets were fitted with the electrolyte NRTL model and the parameters of Mock et al.’s model were estimated. This model has proved to be suitable to represent experimental data in the entire range of compositions. The effect of lithium chloride o…

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria for acetone + methanol + lithium nitrate at 100 kPa

2006

Abstract Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria for the ternary system acetone + methanol + lithium nitrate have been measured at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The addition of lithium nitrate to the solvent mixture produced an important salting-out effect and the azeotrope tended to disappear for small contents of salt. The experimental data sets were fitted with the electrolyte NRTL model and the parameters of the Mock's model were estimated. These parameters were used to predict the ternary vapor–liquid equilibrium which agreed well with the experimental one.

Capillary electrophoretic and nuclear magnetic resonance studies of interactions between halophenols and ionic liquid or tetraalkylammonium cations.

2003

Aqueous capillary electrophoretic studies were performed to investigate interactions between halophenols and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate or tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate electrolytes. In both cases, increased halogen size correlated with increased affinity for the electrolyte cation. For isomers, the ortho substituted isomer exhibited higher affinity than the para isomer. Irreproducible CE results for analyte pairs in the presence of the ionic liquid stimulated investigations of the interactions between halophenols as well as with the cations of the electrolyte. These interactions were explored by proton and fluorine one-dimensional NMR. The NMR results indicated di…
