Discontinuous electrokinetic chromatography of parabens using different substituted resonances as pseudostationary phases

1999

Resorcarene derivatives, negatively charged even at moderate pH, were synthesized and employed as pseudostationary phases to achieve mobilities exceeding that of the electroosmotic flow. Under these conditions, a discontinuous electrolyte system was developed which allows the separation of four uncharged homologous 4-hydroxybenzoic esters (parabens) within a zone of resorcarene electrolyte, and the detection of these UV active compounds in a resorcarene-free zone, free from the high UV background absorbance of the resorcarenes. Resorcarenes, with differently charged functionalities (carboxylate and phosphate groups) to provide the electrophoretic mobility and with alkyl residues of differen…

Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibria for Water + Acetic Acid + Sodium Acetate

2003

Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria for the binary water + sodium acetate and acetic acid + sodium acetate systems and ternary mixtures of water, acetic acid, and sodium acetate have been measured at 100 kPa with a recirculating still. The addition of sodium acetate to water + acetic acid mixtures produced an appreciable rise in equilibrium temperature but a small effect on the relative volatility of water, which was augmented at higher water solvent concentrations and decreased at lower concentrations. These effects increased with higher salt concentrations. The experimental binary data sets have been correlated using a modified Mock's electrolyte NRTL model, which takes into account the asso…

Multilayer Thin Films by Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Hole- and Electron-Transport Polyelectrolytes: Optical and Electrochemical Properties

2006

In this paper, we pressent the synthesis of a series of p-type and n-type semicondnctring polyelectrolytes with triarylamine, oxadiazole, thiarliazole and triazine moictes. The synthesized polymeric hole and electrom iransport materials were examined optically and electrochemically using UV/Vis spectroscopy. PL spectroscopy and CV. Based on the optical and electrochemical data, each of the energy levels were calculated and all values suggested that the were promising hole-(p-type) or alectron=transprot (n-type) materials for devices. Moreover, the synthesized ionie polymers were suitable for LBL thin film deposition from ditute polymer solutions and the multilayers were fully characterized …

Fabrication of Single Cylindrical Au-Coated Nanopores with Non-Homogeneous Fixed Charge Distribution Exhibiting High Current Rectifications

2014

We have designed and characterized a cylindrical nanopore that exhibits high electrochemical current rectification ratios at low and intermediate electrolyte concentrations. For this purpose, the track-etched single cylindrical nanopore in polymer membrane is coated with a gold (Au) layer via electroless plating technique. Then, a non-homogeneous fixed charge distribution inside the Au-coated nanopore is obtained by incorporating thiol-terminated uncharged poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains in series to poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (PVP) chains, which are positively charged at acidic pH values. The functionalization reaction is checked by measuring the current–voltage (I–V) curves prior …

Apparent molar volumes of strontium nitrate and copper(II) chloride in ethanol + water at 298.15 K

1998

Densities of ethanol + water + strontium nitrate and ethanol + water + copper(II) chloride mixtures have been measured with an oscillating-tube densimeter over a large range of concentrations of the salt and ethanol, at 298.15 K. From these densities, apparent molar volumes of both electrolytes in ethanol + water mixtures have been calculated, and partial molar volumes at infinite dilution have been evaluated.

Polymer-induced phase separation in Escherichia coli suspensions

2010

We studied aggregation and phase separation in suspensions of de-flagellated Escherichia coli (AB1157) in phosphate buffer induced by the anionic polyelectrolyte sodium polystyrene sulfonate. We also performed Monte Carlo simulations of this system based on the Asakura–Oosawa model of colloid–polymer mixtures. The results of these simulations, as well as comparison with previous work on synthetic colloid–polymer mixtures, demonstrate that the role of the polymer is to cause a depletion attraction between the E. coli cells. The implication of these results for understanding the role of (predominantly anionic) extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted by bacteria in various natural ph…
