Triblock SEBS/DVB crosslinked and sulfonated membranes: Fuel cell performance and conductivity
2021
[EN] A set of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS) membranes with 10 or 25 wt.% divinyl-benzene (DVB) as a crosslinking agent were prepared and validated. Physicochemical characterization revealed suitable hydrolytic and thermal stability of photo-crosslinked membranes containing 25%wt. DVB and post-sulfonated. These compositions were evaluated in H2/O2 single cells, and electrical and proton conductivities were furtherly assessed. The membranes with the milder post-sulfonation showed greater proton conductivity than those with excessive sulfonation. In terms of electrical conductivity, a universal power law was applied, and the values obtained were low enough for bei…
Modelling of natural and synthetic polyelectrolyte interactions in natural waters.
2006
In this paper SIT and Pitzer models are used for the first time to describe the interactions of natural and synthetic polyelectrolytes in natural waters. Measurements were made potentiometrically at 25 °C in single electrolyte media, such as Et4NI and NaCl (for fulvic acid 0.1 < I /mol L− 1 < 0.75), and in a multi-component medium simulating the composition of natural waters at a wide range of salinities (for fulvic and alginic acids: 5 < S < 45) with particular reference to sea water [Synthetic Sea Water for Equilibrium studies, SSWE]. In order to simplify calculations, SSWE was considered to be a “single salt” BA, with cation B and anion A representing all the major cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+…
Influence of the anion on diffusivity and mobility of ionic liquids composite polybenzimidazol membranes
2020
[EN] The study of proton conductivity processes has received increasing attention in the past decades due to their potential applications in fields such as electrochemical devices and fuel cells. Despite the high number of composite membranes which have been described for this purpose, fundamental studies of the conduction phenomena in polymeric membranes are scarce. In this article, we study on the effect of the anion on ionic conductivity of ionic liquid composite polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes. These membranes, which contain 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (BMIM) with different counterions ([Cl]-, [NCS]-, [NTf2]- and [BF4]-) were analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in…
Structural study of α-Bi2O3 under pressure
2013
An experimental and theoretical study of the structural properties of monoclinic bismuth oxide (alpha-(BiO3)-O-2) under high pressures is here reported. Both synthetic and mineral bismite powder samples have been compressed up to 45 GPa and their equations of state have been determined with angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements. Experimental results have been also compared with theoretical calculations which suggest the possibility of several phase transitions below 10 GPa. However, experiments reveal only a pressure-induced amorphization between 15 and 25 GPa, depending on sample quality and deviatoric stresses. The amorphous phase has been followed up to 45 GPa and its nature di…
Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolytes for Supercapacitor and Supercapattery
2019
There is a strong desire to replace or complement aqueous and organic electrolytes by ionic liquids (ILs) in electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices to achieve high operating voltages and hence high energy capacity. ILs are regarded as the inherent and competitive electrolytes since they were introduced to the electrochemical research community because they can overcome many disadvantages of the conventional aqueous and organic electrolytes, such as narrow potential windows, volatility, and flammability. This paper reviews critically the recent literatures of IL-based electrolytes used in supercapacitor, supercapattery, and micro-supercapacitor. Supercapattery is a generic term for var…
Magnesium concentration in saliva — an indicator of digitalis toxicity
1981
In a prospective study salivary magnesium was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 168 patients on chronic digoxin therapy. Magnesium concentration in saliva was correlated with clinical data and plasma digoxin levels. A significant elevation in salivary magnesium concentration was caused by digoxin therapy (0.58 +/- 0.39 mmol/l, n = 93) in comparison to patients with no digitalis treatment (0.17 +/- 0.07 mmol/l, n = 35). Magnesium concentrations in saliva were significantly higher in toxic patients (1.1 +/- 0.68 mmol/l, n = 32) than in nontoxic patients. Possibly toxic patients showed a magnesium level of saliva of 0.63 +/- 0.39 mmol/l (n = 40). In 89% of the intoxicated pati…

Structural and dynamical characterization of melt PEO–salt mixtures
2002
Abstract Salt doped poly ethylene oxide (PEO) mixtures were investigated by means of both small angle neutron scattering and QENS techniques aiming to characterize morphological and dynamical features in the melt state. These experimental evidences provide support to the proposed heterogeneous scenario for polymer electrolytes. In particular, the existence of PEO–cation complexes is proposed to play a major role in intramolecular cooperation and intermolecular transient crosslinks, which affects the mixture properties.
Nano into Micro Formulations of Tobramycin for the Treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections in Cystic Fibrosis.
2017
Here, nano into micro formulations (NiMs) of tobramycin for the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa airway infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) are described. NiMs were produced by spray drying a solution containing polymers or sugars and a nanometric polyanion–tobramcyin complex (PTC), able to achieve a prolonged antibiotic release. NiMs properties were compared to TOBIPodhaler(Novartis), the only one commercially available dry powder inhalatory formulation based on porous microparticles. Produced NiMs showed adequate characteristics for pulmonary administration, as spherical shape, micrometric size, and high cytocompatibility toward human bronchial epithelial cells. Contrarily to TOBIPodhal…
