Electromagnetically induced transparency in Doppler-broadened three-level systems with resonant standing-wave drive

We study electromagnetically induced transparency for a probe travelling-wave (TW) laser field in closed Doppler-broadened three-level systems driven by a resonant standing-wave (SW) laser field of moderate intensity (its Rabi frequencies are smaller than the Doppler width of the driven transition). We show that probe windows of transparency occur only for values of the probe-to-drive field frequency ratio R close to half-integer values. For optical transitions and typical values of Doppler broadening for atoms in a vapor cell, we show that for R > 1 a SW drive field is appreciably more efficient than a TW driving in inducing probe transparency. In the context of the quark model, a phenomenological expression for the electromagnetic interaction is derived in order to study the polarized structure function of the nucleon. The DHG value without hyperfine corrections and the asymptotic behaviour are reproduced.
Measurements of inclusive jet spectra in pp and central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV

This article reports measurements of the pT- differential inclusive jet cross section in pp collisions at √s=5 .02TeV and the pT- differential inclusive jet yield in Pb-Pb 0–10% central collisions at√sNN =5.02TeV. Jets were reconstructed at midrapidity with the ALICE tracking detectors and electromagnetic calorimeter using the anti-kT algorithm. For ppcollisions, we report jet cross sections for jet resolution parameters R =0.1–0.6 over the range 20 < pT, jet < 140 GeV/c, as well as the jet cross-section ratios of different R and comparisons to two next-to-leading-order (NLO)– based theoretical predictions. Modeling the energy thermalization of X-ray photons in a microcalorimeter with superconducting absorber

We present a modeling of the response of a microcalorimeter to the absorption of X-ray photons, based on the main microscopical processes responsible for the energy thermalization. In particular, we have modeled a microcalorimeter with superconducting tin absorber (350 micron x 350 micron x 7 micron) and neutron transmutation doped (NTD) germanium thermistor (75 micron x 50 micron x 150 micron). Such a detector, operated at 60 mK, is expected to achieve a spectral resolution as good as 1 eV FWHM in the soft X-ray energy range, based on the known sources of thermal and electronic noise. Branching fraction measurements of arsenic 4p25s-4p3 transitions

Abstract Transition lines of neutral arsenic atom (As I) have been observed in the spectra of stellar and sub-stellar objects. Accurate and reliable data of oscillator strengths of those transitions allow differentiating between different evolution models of those objects. We have measured branching fractions for As I (4p25s-4p3) transition lines in 180–310 nm spectral range with higher increased accuracy using light source powered by inductively coupled radio frequency plasma (RF-ICP) source – not earlier applied in studies of atomic arsenic. The diffuse background component is dominated by the background coming from strong interactions with Earth magnetosphere trapped particles. Parametric excitation of bending deformations of a rod by periodic twist

A model of a semiflexible magnetic filament with magnetization frozen in the direction perpendicular to the tangent of its center line is formulated. It is shown that if the rod is magnetized at its ends in opposite directions, an AC magnetic field causes parametric excitation of bending deformations. Neutral curves of parametric excitation are calculated both analytically and numerically. The shapes arising upon parametric excitation of bending deformations are chiral. Periodic rotation of the chiral filament due to nonhomogeneous twist in a nonhomogeneous AC field causes its unidirectional motion.

Effects of Higher-Order Scattering in a Molecular Atmosphere

The effects of higher-order scattering on intensity, degree of polarization, and direction of the plane of polarization in a molecular atmosphere have been calculated.Inclusion of higher-order scattering changes these parameters strongly. Particularly, consideration of higher-order scattering is essential in the blue wavelength range (large optical thickness). The influence increases with decreasing zenith distance of the sun. The earth albedo augments the effect, except for direction of the polarization, which is independent of higher-order scattering.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of absorption of the aerosol particles on the extinction of solar and sky radiation. The efficiency factors have been computed as well as the extinction, the scattering, the absorption, and the scattering function for the whole turbid atmosphere with help of the Mie theory for a complex index of refraction for a more or less absorbent medium. From these values the intensities of diffuse sky radiation have been obtained. The extinction and absorption coefficients increase for a more absorbent atmosphere, whereas the scattering coefficient decreases.
