Measurement of elastic forces between iron colloidal particles in a nematic liquid crystal.

2006

The forces that arise between two iron particles in a nematic liquid crystal with a strong homeotropic anchoring were studied. For the first time, the short range repulsive force resulting from the presence of a hedgehog defect between two particles was precisely determined thanks to application of a small magnetic field and observation of the equilibrium position resulting from the balance between the elastic and magnetic forces. Above a given threshold force, the particles stuck together whereas the hedgehog defect was expelled and transformed into a Saturn ring located between the particles. The attractive part of the interparticle force was determined with the same method on the entire …

Field theoretic study of bilayer membrane fusion: I. Hemifusion mechanism

2003

Self-consistent field theory is used to determine structural and energetic properties of metastable intermediates and unstable transition states involved in the standard stalk mechanism of bilayer membrane fusion. A microscopic model of flexible amphiphilic chains dissolved in hydrophilic solvent is employed to describe these self-assembled structures. We find that the barrier to formation of the initial stalk is much smaller than previously estimated by phenomenological theories. Therefore its creation it is not the rate limiting process. The barrier which is relevant is associated with the rather limited radial expansion of the stalk into a hemifusion diaphragm. It is strongly affected by…

Structure, Spectroscopy, and Spectral Tuning of the Gas-Phase Retinal Chromophore: The β-Ionone "Handle" and Alkyl Group Effect

2005

The low-lying singlet states (i.e. S0, S1, and S2) of the chromophore of rhodopsin, the protonated Schiff base of 11-cis-retinal (PSB11), and of its all-trans photoproduct have been studied in isolated conditions by using ab initio multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory. The computed spectroscopic features include the vertical excitation, the band origin, and the fluorescence maximum of both isomers. On the basis of the S0-->S1 vertical excitation, the gas-phase absorption maximum of PSB11 is predicted to be 545 nm (2.28 eV). Thus, the predicted absorption maximum appears to be closer to that of the rhodopsin pigment (2.48 eV) and considerably red-shifted with respect to that…

Novel Isolated Multiple-Input Buck-Boost DC-DC Converter for Renewable Energy Sources

2021

An isolated multiple input dc-dc converter (MIC) with unidirectional buck-boost characteristics and simultaneous power transfer is proposed for multi-sources in renewable energy systems in this paper. When compared to existing isolated MICs, the proposed MIC significantly reduces the component count and control complexity since it requires a fixed coupled inductor with only one primary and secondary winding each for any number of inputs and does not require any phase-shifted pulse-width modulation. The operation of the proposed converter for simultaneous power transfer from multiple sources with varying voltages is numerically verified in simulation and validated on OPAL-RT’s OP5700 hardwar…

Diatropicity of tetraazanaphthalenes

2006

Tetraazanaphthalenes are diatropic molecules, whose magnetic response to a magnetic field perpendicular to the molecular plane closely resembles that of naphthalene. The out-of-plane component of the magnetic susceptibility tensor and its strong anisotropy can be used as quantifiers of magnetic aromaticity. Maps showing streamlines and modulus of the current density field provide clear evidence for diatropicity of these systems. They also explain the strong anisotropy of carbon and nitrogen magnetic shielding, which is determined by the big out-of-plane component of the nuclear shielding tensor. The electronic ring currents observed in the map deshield the nuclei of ring hydrogens by enforc…

Measurement of branching fractions and charge asymmetries for exclusive B decays to charmonium

2005

We report measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries of exclusive decays of neutral and charged B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium state and a light strange meson. The charmonium mesons considered are J/Psi, Psi(2S) and Chi_c1, and the light meson is either K or K*. We use a sample of about 124 million BBbar events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

On global solutions of the Maxwell-Dirac equations

1987

We prove, for the Maxwell-Dirac equations in 1+3 dimensions, that modified wave operators exist on a domain of small entire test functions of exponential type and that the Cauchy problem, inR+×R3, has a unique solution for each initial condition (att=0) which is in the image of the wave operator. The modification of the wave operator, which eliminates infrared divergences, is given by approximate solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, for a relativistic electron in an electromagnetic potential. The modified wave operator linearizes the Maxwell-Dirac equations to their linear part.

Complete Measurement of the Λ Electromagnetic Form Factors.

2019

The exclusive process e+e−→ΛΛ¯, with Λ→pπ− and Λ¯→p¯π+, has been studied at s=2.396 GeV for measurement of the timelike Λ electric and magnetic form factors, GE and GM. A data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 66.9 pb−1, was collected with the BESIII detector for this purpose. A multidimensional analysis with a complete decomposition of the spin structure of the reaction enables a determination of the modulus of the ratio R=|GE/GM| and, for the first time for any baryon, the relative phase ΔΦ=ΦE−ΦM. The resulting values are R=0.96±0.14(stat)±0.02(syst) and ΔΦ=37°±12°(stat)±6°(syst), respectively. These are obtained using the recently established and most precise value of …

Multipactor Analysis in Coaxial Waveguides for Satellite Applications using Frequency-Domain Methods

2006

This work presents the analysis, manufacturing and testing of a coaxial sample in order to investigate the multipactor effect in this kind of waveguide structures. Several in-home and commercial software have been used to design a quarter-wave transformer coaxial circuit centered at 1.35 GHz. The multipactor analysis of this device has been carried out allowing the prediction of the RF breakdown multipactor threshold. Moreover, the multipactor onset of such a prototype has been measured showing a very good agreement with our simulations. In addition to this, comparison has been also done with results from the technical literature fully validating the new algorithm developed.

Analysis of Multipactor Effect in a Partially Dielectric-Loaded Rectangular Waveguide

2019

This paper 1 presents a study of the multipactor 2 effect in a partially dielectric-loaded rectangular waveguide. 3 To obtain the simulations presented in this paper, a detailed 4 analysis of the dynamics of the electron inside this waveguide 5 has been performed, taking into account the radio frequency 6 electromagnetic fields propagating in the waveguide and the dc 7 electric field that appears because of the charging of the dielectric 8 layer. This electrostatic field is obtained by computing the electric 9 potential produced by an arbitrary charge distribution on the 10 dielectric layer in a dielectric-loaded waveguide. The electron 11 trajectory is then found by numerically solving the…
