Scattering of electromagnetic waves from a graphene-coated thin cylinder of left-handed metamaterial
2017
Abstract In this paper, we explored the scattering behavior of thin cylinders made of a left-handed material (LHM) and coated by a monoatomic graphene layer. A spectral tunability of the resonance peaks is evidenced by altering the chemical potential of the graphene coating, a fact that occurs at any state of polarization of the incident plane wave in opposition to the case of scatterers of dielectric core. On the contrary, no invisibility condition can be satisfied for dielectric environments. A singular performance is also found for cylinders with permittivity and permeability near zero. Practical implementations of our results can be carried out in sensing and wave manipulation driven by…
Dielectric characterization of biocompatible hydrogels for application to Epidermal RFID devices
2015
Functionalized skin-like membranes are currently under investigation for the design of a new class of Epidermal Electronics devices for sensing and healing applications. The dynamic response of epidermal antennas in presence of absorption and release of fluids is a key-point to design RFID radio-sensors and actuators. This paper addresses the characterization of the dielectric property of PVA-based biocompatible hydrogel membranes in the UHF RFID band by means of a modified ring resonator. Samples having different compositions are measured in the dry state as well as when exposed to a progressive release of body fluids emulating perspirations or wound exudates. It was found that the permitt…

Electronic structure and optical properties of CdTe rock-salt high pressure phase
2003
This paper reports on optical absorption and reflectance measurements in thin CdTe samples up to 15 GPa. All studied samples become virtually opaque at the pressure transition between the zinc-blende and rock-salt phases (3.9 GPa). As pressure increases up to 10 GPa, a relative transparency region is observed between 1.2 eV and 2.4 eV, whose high energy edge shifts to higher photon energies. Above 10 GPa the transparency region gradually shrinks and disappears at about 11 GPa. The low energy side of the absorption spectrum is attributed to free carrier absorption, as electronic structure calculations show that rock-salt CdTe is a semimetal or a low gap semiconductor. Band filling effects lo…
Structural Metastability and Quantum Confinement in Zn1–xCoxO Nanoparticles
2016
This paper investigates the electronic structure of wurtzite (W) and rock-salt (RS) Zn1-xCoxO nanoparticles (NPs) by means of optical measurements under pressure (up to 25 GPa), X-ray absorption, and transmission electron microscopy. W-NPs were chemically synthesized at ambient conditions and RS-NPs were obtained by pressure-induced transformation of W-NPs. In contrast to the abrupt phase transition in W-Zn1-xCoxO as thin film or single crystal, occurring sharply at about 9 GPa, spectroscopic signatures of tetrahedral Co(2+) are observed in NPs from ambient pressure to about 17 GPa. Above this pressure, several changes in the absorption spectrum reveal a gradual and irreversible W-to-RS pha…
Density-functional study of pressure-induced phase transitions and electronic properties of Zn2V2O7
2021
We report a study of the high-pressure behavior of the structural and electronic properties of Zn2V2O7 by means of first-principle calculations using the CRYSTAL code. Three different approaches have been used, finding that the Becke–Lee–Yang–Parr functional is the one that best describes Zn2V2O7. The reported calculations contribute to the understanding of previous published experiments. They support the existence of three phase transitions for pressures smaller than 6 GPa. The crystal structure of the different high-pressure phases is reported. We have also made a systematic study of the electronic band-structure, determining the band-gap and its pressure dependence for the different poly…
Experimental and theoretical study on the optical properties of LaVO4 crystals under pressure
2018
We report optical absorption and luminescence measurements in pure and trivalent neodymium (Nd3+) doped LaVO4 crystals up to 25 GPa. Nd3+ luminescence has been employed as a tool to follow the structural changes in the crystal. We also present band-structure and crystal-field calculations that provide the theoretical framework to accurately explain the observed experimental results. In particular, both optical absorption and luminescence measurements evidence that a phase transition takes place close to 12 GPa. They also provide information on the pressure dependence of the band-gap as well as the emission lines under compression. We found drastic changes in the optical properties of LaVO4 …
X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy of thermochromic phase transition in CuMoO4
2018
Thermochromic phase transition was studied in CuMoO4 using the Cu and Mo K-edge x-ray absorption spec-troscopy in the temperature range of 10-300 K. The hysteretic behavior has been evidenced from the tempera-ture dependence of the pre-edge shoulder intensity at the Mo K-edge, indicating that the transition from brown-ish-red γ-CuMoO4 to green α-CuMoO4 occurs in the temperature range of 230-280 K upon heating, whereas the α-to-γ transition occurs between 200 and 120 K upon cooling. Such behavior of the pre-edge shoulder at the Mo K-edge correlates with the change of molybdenum coordination between distorted tetrahedral in α-CuMoO4 and distorted octahedral in γ-CuMoO4. This result has been s…

Preparation of N-doped TiO2: characterization and photocatalytic performance under UV and visibile light
2009
Nanocrystalline N-doped TiO(2) samples were prepared by using TiCl(4) or TiOSO(4) as precursors. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET specific surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was tested using the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV and visible light. Some samples were more active than commercial Degussa P25. A shift of the absorption edge to a lower energy and a stronger absorption in the visible light region were observed in the samples obtained from TiCl(4). Two absorption edges were observed in the samples derived from T…
