Subjective symptoms related to GSM radiation from mobile phone base stations : a cross-sectional study

Objectives: We performed a reanalysis of the data from Navarro et al., 2003, in which health symptoms related to microwave exposure from mobile phone base stations (BS) were explored, including data obtained in a retrospective inquiry about fear of exposure from BS. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: La Ñora (Murcia), Spain. Participants: Participants with known illness in 2003 were subsequently disregarded: 88 participants instead of 101 (in 2003) were analysed. Since weather circumstances can influence exposure, we restricted data to measurements made under similar weather conditions. Changes in Gastric Mucosal Permeability Induced by Haemorrhagic Shock in the Anaesthetized Rat: - Modulation by Acid

Abstract Gastric mucosal damage induced by haemorrhagic shock in the anaesthetized rat has been evaluated by studying changes in capillary-to-lumen clearance of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled dextran. Haemorrhagic shock (20 min ischaemia + 20 min reperfusion) induced a significant increase in blood-to-lumen permeability to FITC-dextran of different molecular weight (10 000, 40 000 and 70 000) without modifying the macroscopic integrity of the gastric mucosa. The increase in vascular permeability was dependent on the time of administration of the tracer and was correlated with an elevation of the protein content of the gastric lumen. Electrical transport in carbon black-epoxy resin composites at different temperatures

Monte Carlo Simulations of Semi-Flexible Polymers

We present Monte Carlo simulations on the phase behavior of semiflexible macromolecules. For a single chain this question is of biophysical interest given the fact that long and stiff DNA chains are typically folded up into very tight compartments. So one can ask the question how the state diagram of a semiflexible chain differs from the coilglobule behavior of a flexible macromolecule. Another effect connected with rigidity of the chains is their tendency to aggregate and form nematically ordered structures. As a consequence one has two competing phase transitions: a gas-liquid and an isotropic-nematic transition potentially giving rise to a complicated phase diagram.

Biopartitioning micellar chromatography to predict skin permeability

Dermal absorption of chemicals is an area of increasing interest to the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, as well as in dermal exposure and risk assessment processes. In this paper the capability of biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC) as an in vitro technique to describe compound percutaneous absorption is evaluated. A multivariate study (principal component analysis, partial least squares) is performed in order to evaluate the importance of some physicochemical variables on the skin permeability constant values. Experimental observations of topologically guided water waves within non-hexagonal structures

International audience; We investigate symmetry-protected topological water waves within a strategically engineered square lattice system. Thus far, symmetry protected topological modes in hexagonal systems have primarily been studied in electromagnetism and acoustics, i.e., dispersionless media. Herein, we show experimentally how crucial geometrical properties of square structures allow for topological transport that is ordinarily forbidden within conventional hexagonal structures. A perfect Fresnel acoustic reflector implemented by a Fano-resonant metascreen

We propose a perfectly reflecting acoustic metasurface which is designed by replacing the curved segments of the traditional Fresnel reflector by flat Fano-resonant sub-wavelength unit cells. To preserve the original Fresnel focusing mechanism, the unit cell phase follows a specific phase profile which is obtained by applying the generalized Snell's law and Fermat's principle. The reflected curved phase fronts are thus created at the air-metasurface boundary by tailoring the metasurface dispersion as dictated by Huygens' principle. Self-dressing and radiation reaction in classical electrodynamics

A canonical approach to self-dressing in classical electrodynamics is presented. A slowly moving, rigid charge distribution is assumed to be completely deprived of the transverse electric E⊥ at an initial time t1' and the development of this component of the field is studied for t > t1' by solving the coupled charge-field Hamilton equations of motion.
