Thermoelastic stress analysis by means of an infrared scanner and a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform-based lock-in technique
2008
An infrared thermographic experimental set-up has been proposed and evaluated towards the capability to measure thermoelastic-effect-induced temperature changes. A standard infrared thermocamera with a nominal noise-equivalent temperature difference (NETD) resolution of 0.12 K has been employed to measure the temperature from unidirectional glass-reinforced plastic tensile coupons under cyclic sinusoidal loads. The raster scanning mode of the camera single detector produces a time delay in acquiring the signal from two succeeding pixels on the same row, and from consecutive scanned rows. By exploiting the acquired dwell times, it was possible to produce a periodic pattern on the thermal ma…
How to Determine Reliable Intensities Using Film Methods?
1997
The basis of a successful structure analysis is to obtain reliable intensities. In the field of electron crystallography intensity data can be collected on-line with a CCD-camera as well as off-line using image plates or film material. Whereas image plates are read out with a laser, film material is analysed via a densitometer or digitised using a CCD-camera or a scanner. Both, CCD-camera and scanner, uses CCDtechnology and we show that both systems can be used for intensity evaluation. In order to obtain reliable intensities from film media it is important to define and calibrate the experimental conditions, the digitization process and the evaluation of intensity data exactly. A high opti…
A high-resolution PET demonstrator using a silicon "magnifying glass".
2021
Abstract To assist ongoing investigations of the limits of the tradeoff between spatial resolution and noise in PET imaging, several PET instruments based on silicon-pad detectors have been developed. The latest is a segment of a dual-ring device to demonstrate that excellent reconstructed image resolution can be achieved with a scanner that uses highresolution detectors placed close to the object of interest or surrounding a small field-of-view in combination with detectors having modest resolution at larger radius. The outer ring of our demonstrator comprises conventional BGO block detectors scavenged from a clinical PET scanner and located at a 500 mm radius around a 50 mm diameter field…
Assessment of image quality of intracoronary ultrasound systems with tissue-equivalent vessel phantoms
2002
Imaging of vascular structures by intracoronary ultrasound (ICUS) is finding more and more applications in coronary diagnosis and in the assessment of interventional access. The authors describe a method for easy and quick production of tissue-equivalent vessel phantoms from a special hydrocolloid. The mechanical tolerance is less than 3/100 mm. With these phantoms the authors tested the calibration and measured the resolution properties of the SONOS intravascular ultrasonic system (Hewlett Packard). The measurements revealed a slight space related underestimation of diameters up to 280 /spl mu/m. Using cross correlation and auto correlation functions the authors analyzed digitized ultrason…
Single-Hemisphere Photoelectron Momentum Microscope With Time-of-Flight Recording
2020
Photoelectron momentum microscopy is an emerging powerful method for angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), especially in combination with imaging spin filters. These instruments record kx-ky images, typically exceeding a full Brillouin zone. As energy filters double-hemispherical or time-of-flight (ToF) devices are in use. Here we present a new approach for momentum mapping of the full half-space, based on a single hemispherical analyzer (path radius 225 mm). Excitation by an unfocused He lamp yielded an energy resolution of 7.7 meV. The performance is demonstrated by k-imaging of quantum-well states in Au and Xe multilayers. The alpha-square-aberration term (alpha: entrance an…
Deconvolution of XPS spectra
1991
The resolution of XPS spectra is limited mainly by instrumental parameters like the spectral line width of the exciting X-ray source and the finite energy resolution of the electron analyzer. If the line broadening functions resulting from the instrumental setup can be estimated and expressed by a spectrometer function, a mathematical recalculation of the intrinsic signal is possible by deconvolution. With the method presented in this paper, a resolution enhancement by a factor of 3 can be obtained. Measured spectra of physically correlated spin orbit doublets have been deconvoluted, and it is shown, that the intensity ratios and the positions are comparable with results obtained by highly …
High-resolution particle sizing by optical tracking of single colloidal particles
1997
Abstract The motion of individual Brownian particles is observed using the confocal Tracking Microscope recently introduced by Schatzel (K. Schatzel, W. G. Neumann, J. Muller and B. Materzok, App. Opt. 31 (1992) 770–778). Particles are laterally trapped in a strongly focused laser beam. By evaluating the light-pressure-induced drift velocity and the backscattered intensity we are able to detemine particle size histograms with a resolution better than 2%. This is demonstrated on a mixture of seven species of polystyrene latex spheres in the diameter range between 300 and 450 nm, where six classes of diameters are identified. We discuss the scope of the method and potential applications.
Unveiling the Ionic Diels-Alder Reactions within the Molecular Electron Density Theory
2021
The ionic Diels–Alder (I-DA) reactions of a series of six iminium cations with cyclopentadiene have been studied within the Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT). The superelectrophilic character of iminium cations, ω >
Unveiling the regioselectivity in electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions of deactivated benzenes through molecular electron density theory
2021
The origin of the meta regioselectivity in electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) reactions of deactivated benzene derivatives is herein analysed through Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT). To this end, the EAS reaction of benzenesulfonic acid with the nitronium NO2+ ion in H2SO4 solution has been studied at the ωB97X-D/6-311G(d,p) level. This reaction takes place through a two-step polar mechanism involving the formation of an unstable cation intermediate. The activation Gibbs free energies associated with the three competitive regioisomeric reaction paths are found in the narrow range of 15.5–18.3 kcal mol−1. By using the Eyring–Polanyi equation a relationship of 18.7 (ortho) : 8…
Steric interactions controlling the syn diastereofacial selectivity in the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction between acetonitrile oxide and 7-oxanorborn…
2017
A Molecular Electron Density Theory study of the zw-type 32CA reactions of acetonitrile oxide (NO) with two 7-oxanorborn-5-en-2-ones (ONBs) has been performed at the DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d) computational level. These cycloadditions proceed through one-step mechanisms with high activation energies and present low para regio and complete syn diastereofacial selectivities. While the non-polar character of these zw-type 32CA reactions, which is the consequence of the insufficient electrophilic activation of ONBs, according to the analysis of the conceptual DFT reactivity indices, accounts for the high activation energies, and low para regioselectivity, NCI topological analyses at the anti/syn pairs …
