DICHROISM IN ANGLE-RESOLVED PHOTOEMISSION FROM Pt(111)

2002

The angular dependence of the circular dichroism in photoemission from Pt(111) was investigated for excitation with VUV and soft X-ray radiation. VUV excitation was used to probe band structure and the circular dichroism for valence band emission. The measurements are compared to full relativistic single step photoemission calculations. XPS was used to investigate the circular dichroism in emission from the 4f core level. In this case, the dichroism is induced by photoelectron diffraction. First results from single step core level calculations are compared to the experimental observations.

Growth and characterization of self-assembled Cd1−xMgxO (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) nanoparticles on r-sapphire substrates

2014

In this work, the growth of isolated Cd1−xMgxO nanoparticles on r-sapphire substrates is extended to the entire range of Mg content (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) using the spray pyrolysis method. The sizes of the Cd1−xMgxO nanoparticles were in the ranges 4–6 nm and 15–30 nm (with a nanoparticle density of 1010 cm−2). The composition of the nanoparticles was determined using transmission electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray analysis (TEM-EDAX), while the compound formation was confirmed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A systematic decrease in the a lattice parameter of Cd1−xMgxO on increasing the Mg content substantiated the successful incorporation of Mg2+ ions into the cubic CdO lattice. Sin…

Which tool to distinguish transient alumina from alpha alumina in thermally grown alumina scales?

2005

International audience; Alumina scales constitute excellent protective barriers when they form on alumina-forming steels. If they keep tightly adherent to the underlying substrate, they isolate it from the surrounding aggressive atmosphere at high temperature. The protectiveness of the alumina scale is highly dependant upon its growth mechanism. The nucleation and transformation of transient alumina (mainly g-Al2O3 and y-Al2O3) is known to play an important role on alumina scale formation. It is therefore fundamental to characterise these transient alumina especially during the early stages of the oxidation process. The morphology of the transient alumina was observed by scanning electron m…

CuInS2 Films for Photovoltaic Applications Deposited by a Low-Cost Method.

2006

We report an atmospheric-pressure deposition method for preparing well-adhered and compact CuInS 2 films. The precursor film is obtained by a solution-coating technique and is subjected to a low-cost and safe one-step reduction-sulfurization treatment. A maximum thickness of 300 nm is achieved per layer, and up to three layers were sulfurized at a time. The obtained films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and visible-near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectrophotometry.

Effect of gamma radiation on thermostimulated exoelectron emission from Gd2O3 films

2020

Abstract The effect of gamma irradiation on Gd2O3 films was studied using the thermostimulated exoelectron emission (TSEE) technique. The films were deposited on a glass and Si/SiO2 substrates using an extraction-pyrolytic method. Crystalline structure, chemical composition, film thickness and surface morphology were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films were irradiated by 10 MeV gamma photons and TSEE was measured from the irradiated films. It was found that gamma irradiation decreases TSEE intensity and the area below TSEE spectral curves. A linear correlati…

Experimentally constrained density-functional calculations of the amorphous structure of the prototypical phase-change materialGe2Sb2Te5

2009

Phase change materials involve the rapid and reversible transition between nanoscale amorphous $(a\text{\ensuremath{-}})$ and crystalline $(c\text{\ensuremath{-}})$ spots in a polycrystalline film and play major roles in the multimedia world, including nonvolatile computer memory. The materials of choice are alloys of Ge, Sb, and Te, e.g., ${\text{Ge}}_{2}{\text{Sb}}_{2}{\text{Te}}_{5}$ (GST) in digital versatile disk--random access memory. There has been much speculation about the structure of $a\text{\ensuremath{-}}$ GST, but no model has yet received general acceptance. Here we optimize the structure by combining the results of density-functional calculations with high-energy x-ray diffr…

A multi-step mechanism and integrity of titanate nanoribbons.

2014

A one-step hydrothermal treatment of TiO2 powders under strongly basic conditions has been used to synthesize titanate nanoribbons. The nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized using several methods including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) to determine their morphological, structural and chemical characteristics. The influence of the nature and size of the TiO2 precursor and of the reaction duration on the formation of the nanoribbons was investigated. The conditions required to obtain only titanate nanoribbons with a width ranging from 100 to 200 nm and several tens of micrometers in length w…

Sol-gel synthesis and photocatalytic activity of ZnO-SnO2 nanocomposites

2014

Abstract ZnO–SnO 2 nanocomposites were synthesized by a facile sol–gel synthesis route and characterized through X-ray diffraction, BET specific surface area analysis, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was tested using the degradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV light as model reaction. The ZnO/SnO 2 molar ratio was varied in order to study its influence on the photoefficiency of the samples. The ZnO–SnO 2 nanocomposites showed higher photoactivity than the pure oxides and in particular the sample with ZnO/SnO 2 mol…

Coupled Semiconductor Systems for Photocatalysis. Preparation and Characterization of Polycrystalline Mixed WO3/WS2 Powders

1999

Mixed WO3/WS2 powders were prepared by oxidation of WS2. The physical properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy; they were strongly dependent upon the time and temperature of oxidation. The chemical state and the elemental distribution of the sample surface were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic results have showed that the aqueous suspensions of the mixed WO3/WS2 systems have significantly higher activities than pure WS2 and WO3 for the photodegradation of phenol. The enhanced performance can be related to the presence of heterojunctions WO3/WS2 on the single parti…

Direct Methane Oxidation on La1-xSrxCr1-yFeyO3-δ perovskite-type oxides as Potential Anode for Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

2016

Abstract La1−xSrxCr1−yFeyO3−δ (x = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2; y = 0, 0.3, 0.5) perovskite-type oxide powders were synthesized by solution combustion synthesis and characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and H2-temperature programmed reduction. Selected compositions were studied by CH4-temperature programmed reduction in the absence and in the presence of H2S. Temperature programmed oxidation and structural characterizations were performed in order to discriminate the nature of residual deposits on the catalyst surface. The study about reduction in different methane-based mixture revealed that total and partial methane oxidation occurred in the range ∼450–1000 °C indepen…
