Absolute Chiral Sensing in Dielectric Metasurfaces Using Signal Reversals.

Sensing molecular chirality at the nanoscale has been a long-standing challenge due to the inherently weak nature of chiroptical signals, and nanophotonic approaches have proven fruitful in accessing these signals. However, in most cases, absolute chiral sensing of the total chiral refractive index has not been possible, while the strong inherent signals from the nanostructures themselves obscure the weak chiroptical signals. Here, we propose a dielectric metamaterial system that overcomes these limitations and allows for absolute measurements of the total chirality, and the possibility for a crucial signal reversal that enables chirality measurements without the need for sample removal. High Power Microwave (HPM) sources are widely used as signal sources in radar, jammer, and Counter Improvised Explosive Devices (CIED). Optimization of ZnO:Al/Ag/ZnO:Al structures for ultra-thin high-performance transparent conductive electrodes

Al-doped ZnO (AZO)/Ag/AZO multilayer coatings (50-70 nm thick) were grown at room temperature on glass substrates with different silver layer thickness, from 3 to 19 nm, by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Thermal stability of the compositional, optical and electrical properties of the AZO/Ag/AZO structures were investigated up to 400 °C and as a function of Ag film thickness. An AZO film as thin as 20 nm is an excellent barrier to Ag diffusion. Anode current saturation of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs

We have measured and compared the characteristics of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs (XP85112/A1-Q-L) with their non-ALD counterparts (XP85012/A1-Q). While the later show excellent performance, the ALD-coated sensors have surprisingly low current saturation levels (~two orders of magnitude lower than expected) and extremely high gain recovery time (more than 7 orders of magnitude higher than expected). We suspect that these problems might be caused by the unexpected side-effects of the ALD process. Isolation of cross-coupling products in model studies on the photochemical modification of proteins by tiaprofenic acid

To gain insight into the chemical nature of drug-induced photoallergy, model studies have been carried out on the photochemical modification of proteins by tiaprofenic acid. Irradiation of decarboxylated tiaprofenic acid (DTPA) in the presence of p-cresol leads to C–C- and C–O-connected p-cresol “dimers”, together with DTPA hydrodimers. The p-cresol–DTPA cross-coupling product was not detected in this reaction. However, a product of this type is formed using a more hindered phenol, such as 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. Unusual basement layer in the midgut of gammaridean Niphargus virei Chevreux (Crustacea, Amphipoda).

1988

The basement membrane of the midgut and posterior caeca epithelium in the gammaridean amphipod Niphargus virei Chevreux, 1896 is made of an unusual structure. This basal lamina, properly called “basal layer”, shows a dense sheet formed by a system of dense hexagonal plates connected by thin filaments. Histochemical studies and enzymatic reactions lead to the conclusion that these structures are proteinaceous, without collagenous protein, and embedded in a neutral polysaccharide matrix. The possible mechanical significance of these mesenteric structures is discussed.

High-pass energy-filtered photoemission electron microscopy imaging of dopants in silicon.

Differently doped areas in silicon can show strong electron-optical contrast in dependence on the dopant concentration and surface conditions. Photoemission electron microscopy is a powerful surface-sensitive technique suitable for fast imaging of doping-induced contrast in semiconductors. We report on the observation of Si (100) samples with n- and p-type doped patterns (with the dopant concentration varied from 10(16) to 10(19) cm(-3)) on a p- and n-type substrate (doped to 10(15) cm(-3)), respectively. How light gets through periodically nanostructured metal films: a role of surface polaritonic crystals

The physical origin of the enhanced optical transmission of periodically structured films related to surface plasmon polaritons is discussed from first principles. The enhancement of transmission through smooth, randomly rough and periodically nanostructured films is considered. Analysis shows that any metal (or dielectric) nanostructured film can exhibit enhanced transmission in certain spectral ranges corresponding to surface plasmon (or phonon) polariton Bloch mode states on a periodic structure.
