A multiphysics approach to the design of a seawave energy conversion system
2008
This paper presents a multiphysics approach to the design of a seawave energy conversion system which consists of a both a permanent magnet linear generator directly coupled to sea waves and the related power electronics conversion system. The thermal, electromagnetic and circuital aspects are included in the proposed approach. In order to maximize energy extraction, the stochastic features of the energy source is considered in the mathematical model of the whole system. An optimization procedures which includes the stochastic features of the model is presented and a machine built on the basis of the results of this procedure is shown.
Sensorless low Range Speed Estimation and Parameter Identification of Induction Motor Drives Devoted to Lifts Automatic Rescue Devices
2010
In this paper a sensorless rotor speed estimation and parameter identification algorithm is presented. The algorithm is designed specifically for induction motor (IM) drives devoted to automatic rescue devices (ARD) used in lifts and hoist applications. Its peculiarity is that it is based on the sinusoidal steady state mathematical model of the IM and, therefore, can be implemented on a low cost micro-controller in a simple way, however without lacking in terms of dynamic performance. It is also capable of self tuning so that no information is required about the specific IM used in the ARD drive. Finally the algorithm allows also an appreciable energy saving of the ARD when compared to olde…
An experimental study on relationship between LED lamp characteristics and non image-forming
2017
The general aim of the experimental study, presented in this paper, was that to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of five different types of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps, which are nowadays those allowing the highest energy consumption reduction, and the humans non image-forming (NIF) reactions.
A novel approach to current transformer characterization in the presence of harmonic distortion
2009
The current transformer (CT) performance under distorted waveform conditions is usually characterized by means of the frequency-response test. In this paper, a new way to characterize CTs, closer to real operation conditions, is proposed. The harmonic phase-angle and ratio errors are measured using a nonsinusoidal current composed of fundamental and one harmonic with adjustable phase shift. The new method was tested by determining the performance of two metering class CTs commonly used by the Italian power company. The errors measured using the proposed approach are larger than the ones obtained with the frequency response. This result suggests that the frequency-response approach for the e…
Selective recovery of gold from electronic waste using 3D-printed scavenger
2017
Around 10% of the worldwide annual production of gold is used for manufacturing of electronic devices. According to the European Commission, waste electric and electronic equipment is the fastest growing waste stream in the European Union. This has generated the need for an effective method to recover gold from electronic waste. Here, we report a simple, effective, and highly selective nylon-12-based three-dimensional (3D)-printed scavenger objects for gold recovery directly from an aqua regia extract of a printed circuit board waste. Using the easy to handle and reusable 3D-printed meshes or columns, gold can be selectively captured both in a batch and continuous flow processes by dipping …
25-kW/50-kHz generator for induction heating
1991
The authors present the features, technology, and construction of a transistorized generator for induction heating operating over the 4-50 kHz frequency range. This type of 25 kW output-power generator allows replacement of the electronic tube generators for most of their applications. The advantages of this new generator are more energy efficiency, extended life, reduced size, separated heating station of the generator, and connection by flexible cable. In addition, the generator has incorporated a frequency automatic tracking system that allows operating without any adjustments over a wide frequency range. >
Memory irradiation measurements for the European SMART-1 spacecraft
2005
Three different types of memory circuits, that are intended to be used on board of the European satellite SMART-1, have been radiation hardness tested according to ESA's specification. Since the satellite is equipped with an electric propulsion engine, the spacecraft will be exposed to radiation during a long time when passing the radiation belt of the Earth. A standard DRAM circuit from SAMSUNG will serve as building block of the mass memory of SMART-1, and has been tested for total dose and proton induced single event upset (SEU). The DRAM memory showed surprisingly good resistance against radiation. The proton SEU cross sections for the radiation tolerant SRAM and FIFO circuits have also…
Leakage-detection in blade pitch control systems for wind turbines
2012
The main contribution of the work is a systematic study evaluating the performance of different filters for leakage detection in pitch control systems. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is examined in a Matlab/Simulink real-time environment. The test bed consists of the following elements: hydraulic power unit, servo valve, two leakage bypasses, hydraulic cylinder, payload and xPC-based control system. The filters are tested with the state-augmentation and the hypothesis testing approaches. To our knowledge, the comparison of these different approaches has not been done previously for this type of application. The paper concludes on the accuracy and sensitivity of the leakage detect…
GA-based Off-Line Parameter Estimation of the Induction Motor Model Including Magnetic Saturation and Iron Losses
2020
This paper, starting from recent papers in the scientific literature dealing with Rotating Induction Motor (RIM) dynamic modelling, as a first step, improves its space-vector dynamic model, including both the magnetic saturation and iron losses; The main original aspects of the proposed model are the following: 1) the magnetic saturation of the iron core has been described on the basis of both current versus flux and flux versus current functions, 3) it includes the iron losses, separating them in hysteresis and eddy current ones, 4) it includes the effect of the load on the magnetic saturation. Afterwards, it proposes an off-line technique for the estimation of electrical parameters of thi…
A real time electromyostimulator linked with EMG analysis device
2013
International audience; In this study, a new system composed of two modules (electromyostimulation + electromyography recording) is presented. It can analyze in real time EMG signals during electromyostimulation. In addition, we propose a new method based on wavelet decomposition to analyze changes in M-wave characteristics. It leads to introduce a new index related to muscular fatigue.
