Elastic plastic analysis iterative solution

1998

The step-by-step analysis of finite element elastic plastic structures subjected to an assigned (quasi-static) loading history, is considered; it identifies with the well-known sequence of linear complementarity problems. An iterative technique devoted to solve the relevant linear complementarity problem is presented. It is based on the recursive solution of a suitable linear complementarity problem, deduced from the relevant one and easier than it. The procedure convergency is proved. Some noticing particular cases are examined. The physical meaning of the procedure is shown to be a plastic relaxation. The suitable numerical ranges for some check parameter values, to be utilized in the app…

Multidomain boundary integral formulation for piezoelectric materials fracture mechanics

2001

Abstract A boundary element method and its numerical implementation for the analysis of piezoelectric materials are presented with the aim to exploit their features in linear electroelastic fracture mechanics. The problem is formulated employing generalized displacements, that is displacements and electric potential, and generalized tractions, that is tractions and electric displacement. The generalized displacements boundary integral equation is obtained by using the closed form of the piezoelasticity fundamental solutions. These are derived through a displacement based modified Lekhnitskii’s functions approach. The multidomain boundary element technique is implemented to achieve the numer…

Impulsive Tests on Historical Structures: The Dome of Teatro Massimo in Palermo

2016

Cultural heritage is the set of things, that having particular historical cultural and aesthetic are of public interest and constitute the wealth and civilization of a place and its people. Sharpen up methodologies aimed at safeguarding of monuments is crucial because the future may have in mind the historical past. Italy is a country that has invested heavily on its historical memory returned in large part by the historical building or the monuments. Furthermore, culture represents a fundamental indicator of the growth of the culture of a country. Consider a monitoring project of one of the most Impressive theater in the world, like “Teatro Massimo” in Palermo (Italy), means to add value t…

Finite element approximation of parabolic hemivariational inequalities

1998

In this paper we introduce a finite element approximation for a parabolic hemivariational initial boundary value problem. We prove that the approximate problem is solvable and its solutions converge on subsequences to the solutions of the continuous problem

Comparative Study of the a Posteriori Error Estimators for the Stokes Problem

2007

The research presented is focused on a comparative study of a posteriori error estimation methods to various approximations of the Stokes problem. Mainly, we are interested in the performance of functional type a posterior error estimates and their comparison with other methods. We show that functional type a posteriori error estimators are applicable to various types of approximations (including non-Galerkin ones) and robust with respect to the mesh structure, type of the finite element and computational procedure used. This allows the construction of effective mesh adaptation procedures in all cases considered. Numerical tests justify the approach suggested.

Toxicological Impact of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) on the Reproduction and Development of Aquatic Organisms Using Sea Urchins as Biological Models

2022

The growing presence of lanthanides in the environment has drawn the attention of the scientific community on their safety and toxicity. The sources of lanthanides in the environment include diagnostic medicine, electronic devices, permanent magnets, etc. Their exponential use and the poor management of waste disposal raise serious concerns about the quality and safety of the ecosystems at a global level. This review focused on the impact of lanthanides in marine organisms on reproductive fitness, fertilization and embryonic development, using the sea urchin as a biological model system. Scientific evidence shows that exposure to lanthanides triggers a wide variety of toxic insults, includi…

Interactions of carbon nanotubes with aqueousaquatic media containing organicinorganic contaminants and selected organisms of aquatic ecosystems – A …

2015

Due to their unique molecular architecture translating into numerous every-day applications, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) will be ultimately an increasingly significant environmental contaminant. This work reviews qualitative/quantitative analyses of interactions of various types of CNTs and their chemically modified analogues with aqueous/aquatic media containing organic and inorganic contaminants and selected organisms of aquatic ecosystems. A special emphasis was placed on physicochemical interactions between CNTs as adsorbents of heavy metal cations and aromatic compounds (dyes) with its environmental consequences. The studies revealed CNTs as more powerful adsorbents of aromatic compounds (…

Selective and Efficient Removal of Mercury from Aqueous Media with the Highly Flexible Arms of a BioMOF

2016

A robust and water-stable metal-organic framework (MOF), featuring hexagonal channels decorated with methionine residues (1), selectively captures toxic species such as CH3 Hg(+) and Hg(2+) from water. 1 exhibits the largest Hg(2+) uptake capacity ever reported for a MOF, decreasing the [Hg(2+) ] and [CH3 Hg(+) ] concentrations in potable water from highly hazardous 10 ppm to the much safer values of 6 and 27 ppb, respectively. Just like with biological systems, the high-performance metal capture also involves a molecular recognition process. Both CH3 Hg(+) and Hg(2+) are efficiently immobilized by specific conformations adopted by the flexible thioether "claws" decorating the pores of 1. T…

Voltammetric behavior of berenil.

1993

Abstract Berenil is reduced on mercury drops electrode in buffered aqueous media. The reduction of —N=N— group is controlled by diffusion. Polarographie waves are of analytical usefulness. The hydrogen discharge is favored by the basic centers of the molecule in Co(ll)/ammonia-buffered media.
