A fast hierarchical dual boundary element method for three-dimensional elastodynamic crack problems

2010

In this work a fast solver for large-scale three-dimensional elastodynamic crack problems is presented, implemented, and tested. The dual boundary element method in the Laplace transform domain is used for the accurate dynamic analysis of cracked bodies. The fast solution procedure is based on the use of hierarchical matrices for the representation of the collocation matrix for each computed value of the Laplace parameter. An ACA (adaptive cross approximation) algorithm is used for the population of the low rank blocks and its performance at varying Laplace parameters is investigated. A preconditioned GMRES is used for the solution of the resulting algebraic system of equations. The precond…

A fast dual boundary element method for 3D anisotropic crack problems

2009

In the present paper a fast solver for dual boundary element analysis of 3D anisotropic crack problems is formulated, implemented and tested. The fast solver is based on the use of hierarchical matrices for the representation of the collocation matrix. The admissible low rank blocks are computed by adaptive cross approximation (ACA). The performance of ACA against the accuracy of the adopted computational scheme for the evaluation of the anisotropic kernels is investigated, focusing on the balance between the kernel representation accuracy and the accuracy required for ACA. The system solution is computed by a preconditioned GMRES and the preconditioner is built exploiting the hierarchical …

Modeling the influence of potassium content and heating rate on biomass pyrolysis

2017

This study presents a combined kinetic and particle model that describes the effect of potassium and heating rate during the fast pyrolysis of woody and herbaceous biomass. The model calculates the mass loss rate, over a wide range of operating conditions relevant to suspension firing. The shrinking particle model considers internal and external heat transfer limitations and incorporates catalytic effects of potassium on the product yields. Modeling parameters were tuned with experimentally determined char yields at high heating rates (>200 K s−1) using a wire mesh reactor, a single particle burner, and a drop tube reactor. The experimental data demonstrated that heating rate and potassium …

Oxidovanadium(v) complexes with l-proline-based amino acid phenolates

2019

Abstract l -proline was used to prepare chiral, tridentate amino acid phenol proligands H2L1–4. These proligands react with vanadium precursors VO(acac)2, VOSO4∙5H2O and VO(OPr)3 in methanol to form the corresponding oxidoalkoxidovanadium( v ) complexes 1–4. The complexes crystallize from methanol, and are octahedrally coordinated with a general formula [VO(L1–4)(OMe)(MeOH)]. In solution, however, they adopt several different conformations or isomeric structures depending on the solvent.

The application of a reduced volume method for the simulation of the characterisation of a carbon fibre pressure vessel

2018

International audience; The characteristics of advanced composite materials make them ideally suited for use in pressure vessels for storing gas as fuel for ground transport vehicles. It has been found that the failure process starts with randomly distributed fibre breaks and as the loading continues, they coalesce into clusters of fibre breaks which lead to failure [4]. However, improvements are needed to reduce computational times when performing full-scale simulations. The reduced volume method is therefore applied to the stochastic fibre break model related to the concept of an integral range. This method allows the calculation for a certain volume of a laminate that statistically repre…

Impact of pericardial effusion on cardiac mechanics in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy

2013

Dilated cardiomyopathy (CDM) is a degenerative disease of the myocardium accompanied by left ventricular (LV) remodeling, resulting in an impaired pump performance. Differently, pericardial effusion(PE) is a liquid accumulation in the pericardial cavity, which may inhibit blood filling of heart chambers. Clinical evidence show that PE may improve pump performance in patients with CDM. Therefore, this study aims to assess wall stress and global function of patients with CDM, PE as compared to healthy patient. These findings suggests that CDM has an important implication in the mechanical changes of LV and right ventricle by increasing wall stress and reducing pump function. Conversely, PE de…

Finite element approximation for a div-rot system with mixed boundary conditions in non-smooth plane domains

1984

The authors examine a finite element method for the numerical approximation of the solution to a div-rot system with mixed boundary conditions in bounded plane domains with piecewise smooth boundary. The solvability of the system both in an infinite and finite dimensional formulation is proved. Piecewise linear element fields with pointwise boundary conditions are used and their approximation properties are studied. Numerical examples indicating the accuracy of the method are given. peerReviewed
