Evidences on alterations in skeleton composition and mineralization in a site-attached fish under naturally acidified conditions in a shallow CO2 vent
2021
Abstract Background Ocean acidification may affect fish mineralized structures (i.e. otoliths and skeleton). Methods Here, we compared the elemental composition of muscle and skeleton and the mineral features of skeleton in the site-attached fish Gobius bucchichi naturally exposed to high pCO2/low pH conditions in a shallow CO2 vent with fish of the same species exposed to normal pH. Results Overall, no skeleton malformations were found in both pH conditions, but among-site differences were found in the elemental composition. Interestingly, higher Ca/P values, inducing a moderate skeleton maturation, were found in fish exposed to acidified conditions than in controls. Conclusion Our finding…
High accuracy Raman measurements using the Stokes and anti-Stokes lines
1997
We show that by measuring the separation between the Stokes and anti-Stokes peaks excited by two different laser lines we obtain a very precise determination of absolute phonon energies. The method is useful for measuring small changes of these energies with strain, temperature, laser power, etc. It doubles the changes and avoids the necessity of using the reference lines in the Raman spectra. The method can be applied for the determination of phonon deformation potentials, for the characterization of strained heteroepitaxial layers, and for micro-Raman analysis of strain in silicon integrated circuits. We give examples of phonon shifts in Si, Ge, GaAs, InAs, and GaP as a function of applie…
The silver collection of San Gennaro treasure (Neaples): A multivariate statistic approach applied to X-ray fluorescence data
2021
Abstract In this work we report an X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) study combined with a multivariate approach allowing to detect compositional differences and similarities among the alloys used in realization of silver collection of San Gennaro items collection. The San Gennaro treasure in Naples (Italy) represents, in fact, one of the most important silver collections in the world. The classification of the collection items is very complex, not only for the large number of objects, but also in consideration that between 1600 and 1700, in Naples, more than 350 laboratories were active, most of them specialized in specific art of work. As a consequence, a given collection object could…
Comparison of adsorption equilibrium models and error functions for the study of sulfate removal by calcium hydroxyapatite microfibrillated cellulose…
2017
In the present study, the adsorption of sulfates of sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) by calcium hydroxyapatite-modified microfibrillated cellulose was studied in the aqueous solution. The adsorbent was characterized using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope and elemental analysis in order to gain the information on its structure and physico-chemical properties. The adsorption studies were conducted in batch mode. The effects of solution pH, contact time, the initial concentration of sulfate and the effect of competing anions were studied on the performance of synthesized adsorbent for sulfate removal. Adsorption kinetics indica…
Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for Rapid Elemental Analysis of Drillcore
2013
Abstract The elemental and mineralogical contents of rock drillcore can be analyzed using a variety of methods. For efficient exploration the characterization of the drillcore should be performed rapidly, so that the further drillings can be better planned and unnecessary costs can be reduced. In this paper, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is studied as a potential rapid on-line method for automated elemental analysis of drillcore. The method is based on a pulsed laser beam that transforms a small volume of the sample into plasma. Individual elements in the plasma have characteristic emission patterns detectable by a spectrometer. Based on the measured spectra the amount of diff…
La utilización de marfil de cachalote en el Calcolítico de Portugal
2013
Scientific analysis were undertaken within a research project concerning ivory objects from the Chalcolithic to Early Bronze Age of the Iberian Peninsula. In several of the analyses of objects from Portuguese Estremadura, especially V-perforated buttons, we could detect for the first time the presence of sperm whale ivory. This highlights the advantage and necessity of scientific analysis of ivory. It also clearly demonstrates that not all ivory used was ivory from African or Asian elephants, but we also did find ivory from the extinct Elephas antiquus, the hippopotamus and in this case sperm-whale. Thus, already in the Chalcolithic the raw material provenience was highly diverse, which in …
Synthesis of polymeric alkoxides from dialkyltin(IV) oxides and chloral, and their characterization by mössbauer and infrared spectroscopy
1979
Abstract The reaction of (Alk2SnO)n with OCH·CCl3 gives compounds of elemental formula Alk2SnOCH- (CCI3)O (Alk = Bun, Octn), probably by addition of the Sn-O bond to the carbonyl group. Mossbauer parameters suggest the occurrence of five-coordinated Sn, and polymeric structures with bridging three- coordinating oxygens are proposed. The assumption that C2SnO3 units with trigonal bipyramidal type structures are present is consistent with point-charge model rationalization of the quadrupole splitting. Infrared spectra are in keeping with the proposed structures, suggesting, inter alia, bent C Sn C skeletons, but the analysis of possible ν(Sn-O) modes does not provide conclusive evidence for t…
Ethylene oligomerization with 2-hydroxymethyl-5,6,7-trihydroquinolinyl-8-ylideneamine-Ni(II) chlorides
2021
Abstract A series of Ni complexes of the general formula [2-(MeOH)-8-{N(Ar)}C9H8N]NiCl2, where Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3 in Ni1; 2,6-Et2C6H3 in Ni2; 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3 in Ni3; 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 in Ni4; 2,6-Et2-4-MeC6H2 in Ni5 and 2,4,6-t-Bu3C6H2 in Ni6 has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy. On activation with MMAO or Et2AlCl, these complexes showed high activity in ethylene oligomerization, reaching 2.23 × 106 g·mol–1 (Ni) h–1 at 30 °C with the Al/Ni ratio of 5500 and 9.11 × 105 g·mol–1 (Ni) h–1 with the Al/Ni of 800, respectively. Moreover, the content of α-C4 indicated high selectivity exceeding 99% in the Ni/Et2AlCl system. Comparing with the previous report by o…
Characterization and Evaluation of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Char from Alkali Lignin in Subcritical Temperatures.
2021
An evaluation of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) char is investigated in this work. Morphological studies, N2 adsorption behavior, FTIR analysis, thermal behavior, and elemental composition are studied. The HTL char yield showed an increase with higher operating temperatures. It increased from 11.02% to 33% when the temperature increased from 573 K to 623 K. At lower temperatures, the residence time showed an impact on the yield, while close to the critical point, residence time became less impactful. Elemental analysis showed that both higher operating temperatures and longer residence times increased the nitrogen content of the chars from 0.32% to 0.51%. FTIR analysis suggested the char b…
