Production of hypernuclei in multifragmentation of nuclear spectator matter

2007

In peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions highly excited spectators containing Lambda-hyperons can be produced. Such strange spectator matter may undergo a break-up into many fragments (multifragmentation) as it is well established for ordinary nuclear systems. We generalize the statistical multifragmentation model, previously successfully used for the description of experimental data, for the case of hypernuclear systems. We predict relative yields of hypernuclei and the main characteristics of such a break-up. We point at a connection of this phenomenon with a liquid-gas phase transition in hypermatter.

Virtual photons and electrodisintegration of the deuteron

1982

The validity of the virtual photon concept in the analysis of deuteron electrodisintegration for equivalent photon energies up to 300 MeV is investigated. The deuteron and the final state interaction are described by the consistent nonrelativistic calculation of Fabian and Arenhoevel neglecting the effects of meson exchange currents and isobar configurations. We find that in well defined kinematic domains the use of the virtual photon concept is justified in extracting photodisintegration cross sections.

First measurement of the circular beam asymmetry in the γ→p→π0ηp reaction

2010

Abstract The circular photon asymmetry for π 0 η photoproduction on the proton was measured for the first time at the tagged photon facility of the MAMI C accelerator using the Crystal Ball/TAPS photon spectrometer. The experimental results are interpreted within a phenomenological isobar model that confirms the dominant role of the Δ ( 1700 ) D 33 resonance. The measured asymmetry allows us to identify small contributions from positive-parity resonances via interference terms with the dominant D 33 amplitude.

PION DOUBLE CHARGE EXCHANGE REACTIONS LEADING TO DOUBLE PIONIC ATOMS

1992

We study theoretically pion double charge exchange reactions leading to double pionic atoms. The reaction cross-sections with two pions in the deeper bound pionic orbits in 208Pb are calculated with realistic pionic atom wave functions and distortion effects. The cross-sections are found to be d2σ/dEdΩ~10−3−10−4 µ b/srMeV , which are only a small fraction of the double charge exchange background.

N14(γ,π+)14Cgsat photon energies of 230, 260, and 320 MeV

1990

The pion angular distribution for {sup 14}N({gamma},{pi}{sup +}){sup 14}C{sub g.s.} has been measured at photon energies of 230 and 260 MeV. These data are consistent with the trend of our earlier data at 200 and 320 MeV. Additional forward angle data were obtained at 320 MeV. The results are compared to several calculations based on the distorted-wave impulse approximation and on the delta-hole model. The data are best fit by the calculations of Tiator {ital et} {ital al}. which use the delta-hole model in the resonance channel. These calculations fit the 230 MeV data well and underestimate the 260 and 320 MeV data by about 25%.

High-spin states in205Rn:A new shears band structure?

1999

The high-spin structure of {sup 205}Rn has been investigated for the first time following the {sup 170}Er({sup 40}Ar,5n) and {sup 197}Au({sup 14}N,6n) reactions at beam energies of 183 MeV and 90{endash}110 MeV, respectively, using the Jurosphere and YRAST Ball arrays. Two new cascades have been identified which dominate the high-spin decay. One of these, consisting of ten stretched M1 transitions with unobserved E2 crossover transitions, is interpreted as a shears structure based on the {nu}i{sub 13/2}{sup {minus}1}{circle_times}{pi}i{sub 13/2}{sup 2} (or {nu}i{sub 13/2}{sup {minus}1}{circle_times}{pi}h{sub 9/2}i{sub 13/2}) configuration. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical…

Search for a 2-quasiparticle high-Kisomer inRf256

2011

The energies of 2-quasiparticle (2-qp) states in heavy shell-stabilized nuclei provide information on the single-particle states that are responsible for the stability of superheavy nuclei. We have calculated the energies of 2-qp states in {sup 256}Rf, which suggest that a long-lived, low-energy 8{sup -} isomer should exist. A search was conducted for this isomer through a calorimetric conversion electron signal, sandwiched in time between implantation of a {sup 256}Rf nucleus and its fission decay, all within the same pixel of a double-sided Si strip detector. A 17(5)-{mu}s isomer was identified. However, its low population, {approx}5(2)% that of the ground state instead of the expected {a…

Meson production inp+U, O+U and S+U interactions at 200 GeV/nucleon

1992

Meson production in proton, oxygen and sulphur interactions with uranium targets at 200 GeV/nucleon is studied. We measure the inclusive meson cross-section d σ/dPT2 and its evolution fromp+U to S+U. The cross-section fitted with an exponential gives an inverse slopePT0 of the order of 210 MeV/c. As a function of the neutral transverse energy,PT0 values show a slight rise followed by a plateau. The normalized difference (σ+−σ−)/σ− between positive and negative meson cross-sections is found to increase withET.

Incoherent neutral pion photoproduction on 12C.

2007

We present the first detailed measurement of incoherent photoproduction of neutral pions to a discrete state of a residual nucleus. The C-12(gamma,pi(0))C-12(4.4 MeV)* reaction has been studied with the Glasgow photon tagger at MAMI employing a new technique which uses the large solid angle Crystal Ball detector both as a pi(0) spectrometer and to detect decay photons from the excited residual nucleus. The technique has potential applications to a broad range of future nuclear measurements with the Crystal Ball and similar detector systems elsewhere. Such data are sensitive to the propagation of the Delta in the nuclear medium and will give the first information on matter transition form fa…

Differential cross sections for coherent and incoherent neutral-pion photoproduction from calcium

1989

Differential and absolute cross sections for the coherent reaction $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$(\ensuremath{\gamma},${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$${)}^{40}$Ca g.s., as well as for the incoherent reaction $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$(\ensuremath{\gamma},${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$${)}^{40}$Ca(g.s.), have been measured with monochromatic photons in the threshold region (${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$=157--169 MeV). The differential cross section for the coherent process exhibits a diffraction minimum due to the nuclear mass form factor while the incoherent cross section is rather structureless. The cross sections are in good agreement with recent distorted-wave impulse-approximation calculations.
