Formation of irreversibly bound annexin A1 protein domains on POPC/POPS solid supported membranes

2008

AbstractThe specific interaction of annexin A1 with phospholipid bilayers is scrutinized by means of scanning force and fluorescence microscopy, quartz crystal microbalance, ellipsometry, and modeled by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that POPC/POPS bilayers exhibit phase separation in POPC- and POPS-enriched domains as a function of Ca2+ concentration. Annexin A1 interacts with POPC/POPS bilayers by forming irreversibly bound protein domains with monolayer thickness on POPS-enriched nanodomains, while the attachment of proteins to the POPC-enriched regions is fully reversible. A thorough kinetic analysis of the process reveals that both, the binding constant of annexin A1 at …

Characterization of ALD grown Ti x Al y N and Ti x Al y C thin films

2017

Abstract Atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used to grow Ti x Al y N and Ti x Al y C thin films using trimethylaluminum (TMA), titanium tetrachloride and ammonia as precursors. Deposition temperature was varied between 325 °C and 500 °C. Films were also annealed in vacuum and N 2 -atmosphere at 600–1000 °C. Wide range of characterization methods was used including time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis (ToF-ERDA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray reflectometry (XRR), Raman spectroscopy, ellipsometry, helium ion microscopy (HIM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and 4-point probe measurement for resistivity. Deposited films were roughly 100 nm thick and contained mainly desired elemen…

Phase Transition of Individually Addressable Microstructured Membranes Visualized by Imaging Ellipsometry

2007

The phase transition of individually addressable microstructured lipid bilayers was investigated by means of imaging ellipsometry. Microstructured bilayers were created on silicon substrates by micromolding in capillaries, and the thermotropic behavior of various saturated diacyl phosphatidylcholine (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, 1,2-dipentadecoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, and 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC)) bilayers as well as DMPC/cholesterol membranes was determined by measuring the area expansion and thickness of the bilayer as a function of temperature. We found an increase in the main phase transition temperature T(M) of 2-6 degrees C and a substa…

Melting and interdigitation of microstructured solid supported membranes quantified by imaging ellipsometry

2010

The phase transition of individually addressable microstructured lipid bilayers was investigated by means of noncontact imaging ellipsometry. Two-dimensional membrane compartments were created on silicon substrates by micromolding in capillaries and the phase transition of supported dimyristoylphosphadiylcholine DMPC and dipentadecoylphosphatidylcholine DiC15PC membranes was determined measuring area expansion and thickness of the bilayer as a function of temperature, ethanol concentration, and cholesterol content. Apart from measuring the thermotropic behavior of DMPC on glass slides and silicon wafers, the authors were able to visualize the reversible induction of an interdigitated phase …

Ellipsometric studies of behenic acid at the air-water interface

1991

The rich phase behaviour of monolayers of behenic acid (=docosanoic acid) has been analyzed by null ellipsometry in isothermic and isobaric measurements. By using structural data known from x-ray measurements the anisotropy and refractive indices in the vicinity of the S-CS phase transition have been calculated with a minimum of model assumptions. The calculated values are: nsx=1.47. ncsx=1.48. nsz=1.54. ncsz=1.55. and anisotropy γ=nx/nz ≈0.95. It is also shown that ellipsometry is a very sensitive and convenient method of detecting phase transitions. Its value for quantifying the roughness of the monolayer in the close vicinity of phase transitions due to thickness and density fluctuations…

Optical measurements of an acylated azacrown at the air-water interface

1991

In this study, a cyclame derivative bearing four aliphatic chain substituents shows, like many amphiphiles, solid-condensed as well as liquid-expanded phases. In contrast to the classical amphiphiles, the onset of its phase transition is characterized by a bump-like shape whose amplitude is a function of the compression speed. Ellipsometry which is very sensitive to the monolayer physical state changes, and fluorescence microscopy which has contributed significantly to the understanding of the phenomena occurring in the phase transition region have been used to investigate the monolayer behavior of this compound. This study shows that in the liquid-expanded state, the film is homogeneous an…

Study on Structural, Mechanical, and Optical Properties of Al2O3–TiO2 Nanolaminates Prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition

2015

Structural, optical, and mechanical properties of Al2O3/TiO2 nanolaminates fabricated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) were investigated. We performed transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray reflectivity (XRR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), ellipsometry, UV–vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and nanointendation to characterize the Al2O3/TiO2 nanolaminates. The main structural, optical, and mechanical parameters of Al2O3/TiO2 nanolaminates (thickness, grain size, refractive index, extinction coefficient, band gap, hardness, and Young’s module) were calculated. It was established that with decreasing of the layer thickness, the …

Ab-Initio Studies of Electronic and Spectroscopic Properties of MgO, ZnO and CdO

2008

We present ab-initio calculations of excited-state properties within single-particle and two-particle approaches in comparison with corresponding experimental results. For the theoretical treatment of the electronic structure, we compute eigenvalues and eigenfunctions by using a spatially nonlocal exchange-correlation potential. From this starting point, quasiparticle energies within the fully frequency-dependent G(0)W(0) approximation are obtained. By solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation, we evaluate optical properties, including the electron-hole attraction and the local-field effects. The results are compared with experimental spectra from soft X-ray emission, as well as from X-ray photoe…
