Long-Term Breastfeeding: The Embodied Experiences of Finnish Mothers

Mothers’ experiences constitute a central and widely discussed issue within feminist breastfeeding research. Less is said however, about long-term breastfeeding in relation to embodiment. This article analyses the embodied experiences of Finnish mothers who have breastfed for over a year. Through a feminist lens, and an inductive qualitative content analysis, the written accounts of 39 long-term breastfeeding mothers were analysed, to show how mothers reflect on embodiment while breastfeeding long-term. The purpose of this research was to study skill learning and the meaning of the art and skill subjects in Finnish comprehensive school. During the last decade, there have been many discussions in the media about the position of the art and skill subjects in our school system and the curriculum. In this paper I will try to systematically lay out and describe the multiple dimensions of the embodied experience of illness, which until recently has been the main focus within the field of the phenomenology of medicine. In order to do this, I will turn to analysis of the nature of embodiment in Husserl’s phenomenology. Background: Throughout society, including in the field of sports and physical education (PE), there are extensive debates on racism and structural racism. Researchers have found that students of color experience racial stereotyping and discrimination in PE.
