Maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection
2021
WOS:000613461600006 PubMed ID: 32926494 Objectives To evaluate the maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnancies affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods This was a multinational retrospective cohort study including women with a singleton pregnancy and laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, conducted in 72 centers in 22 different countries in Europe, the USA, South America, Asia and Australia, between 1 February 2020 and 30 April 2020. Confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection was defined as a positive result on real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay of nasopharyngeal swab specimens. The primary outcome was a composite measure of maternal mortality and morbidity…

Head and neck cancer surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic: An international, multicenter, observational cohort study
2020
Background The aims of this study were to provide data on the safety of head and neck cancer surgery currently being undertaken during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods This international, observational cohort study comprised 1137 consecutive patients with head and neck cancer undergoing primary surgery with curative intent in 26 countries. Factors associated with severe pulmonary complications in COVID-19-positive patients and infections in the surgical team were determined by univariate analysis. Results Among the 1137 patients, the commonest sites were the oral cavity (38%) and the thyroid (21%). For oropharynx and larynx tumors, nonsurgical therapy was favored in…
HGG-03. THE GLYCOSPHINGOLIPIDS METABOLISM IS A NOVEL TARGET IN H3K27M-MUTANT DIFFUSE MIDLINE GLIOMA
2021
Abstract H3K27M-mutant diffuse midline glioma (H3K27M-mutant DMG) is a rare malignant brain tumour entity in children and adults with a median overall survival of around 12 months. Genomic and proteomic analysis may help to identify new target structures, however not all relevant targets are covered by these analyses. Glycosphingolipids and particularly gangliosides play a major role in brain development and have been involved in the pathology of brain tumours. The conversion of ceramide to glucosylceramide via glucosylceramide synthase (GCS) is one of the first steps in the synthesis of glycosphingolipids. Therefore, targeting GCS will inhibit their synthesis. Here we analysed the glycosph…
Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy expert consensus opinion for SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in onco-hematological patients.
2021
Abstract In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, different vaccines in front of SARS-CoV-2 have been approved and administered in different vulnerable populations. As patients with cancer were excluded from pivotal trials of vaccination, little is known on their immunogenic response to these vaccines, particularly in patients with severely impaired immune system. In response to that uncertainty, the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy launched an initiative aimed to provide recommendations for vaccination of the main hematological conditions. This document is based on the available information on COVID-19 outcomes, prior knowledge on vaccination in hematological patients, recent pu…
EPCT-15. RAPID EPIGENOMIC CLASSIFICATION OF BRAIN TUMORS ENABLES INTRAOPERATIVE NEUROSURGICAL RISK MODULATION
2021
Abstract Background Clear identification of tumor subtype is the main predictor of patient outcome and ultimately what is considered an adequate level of surgical risk. At brain tumor resection, imaging modalities and intraoperative histology often give an ambigious diagnosis, complicating intraoperative surgical decision-making. Here, we report a nanopore DNA methylation analysis (NDMA) sequencing approach combined with machine learning for classification of tumor entities that could be used intraoperatively. Methods We analyzed 50 biopsies obtained from biobanked tissue (43, prospective) or sampled at surgery (7, intraoperative) from 20 female and 30 male patients with a median age of 8 y…
A new species ofCentaurea(Asteraceae) from Sicily
2008
A new species of Centaurea, Centaurea sicana, endemic to Sicily, is described. This new taxon is close to Centaurea parlatoris and Centaurea giardinae (Sect. Dissectae), the former occurring at Palermo and in the Madonie Mountains, while the latter occurs on the Etna volcano. The new species has so far been found only on the Sicani Mountains, a limestone mountain range in western Sicily, while the related species occur in the surrounding mountains. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 157, 785–788.
Computational identification of cell-specific variable regions in ChIP-seq data.
2019
ABSTRACT Chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq) is used to identify genome-wide DNA regions bound by proteins. Several sources of variation can affect the reproducibility of a particular ChIP-seq assay, which can lead to a misinterpretation of where the protein under investigation binds to the genome in a particular cell type. Given one ChIP-seq experiment with replicates, binding sites not observed in all the replicates will usually be interpreted as noise and discarded. However, the recent discovery of high-occupancy target (HOT) regions suggests that there are regions where binding of multiple transcription factors can be identified. To investigate these regions,…
Venezuela's humanitarian crisis, resurgence of vector-borne diseases, and implications for spillover in the region
2019
In the past 5–10 years, Venezuela has faced a severe economic crisis, precipitated by political instability and declining oil revenue. Public health provision has been affected particularly. In this Review, we assess the impact of Venezuela's health-care crisis on vector-borne diseases, and the spillover into neighbouring countries. Between 2000 and 2015, Venezuela witnessed a 359% increase in malaria cases, followed by a 71% increase in 2017 (411 586 cases) compared with 2016 (240 613). Neighbouring countries, such as Brazil, have reported an escalating trend of imported malaria cases from Venezuela, from 1538 in 2014 to 3129 in 2017. In Venezuela, active Chagas disease transmission has be…
