L’amour aux temps d’Internet : raison et émotion dans la recherche de partenaire en ligne des Chiliens
2017
This study analyzes the pages of online dating, more specifically, the interpretation that Chilean surfers perform these virtual spaces; interactions that occur within these web portals; and the sense that national users associate with their interactions. To answer these objectives not only a number of methods of collection and analysis of information is used, but in turn, the data generated is inserted in a wide theoretical discussion about love and relationships. Thus, in the first part of this work, the imagery of love is analyzed from its main myths and stories. Subsequently the historical and sociological constitution of relationships is analyzed. Epistemological, methodological and et…
Undercurrents and crosscurrents revealed: Sinéad Morrissey’s parallactic poetry
2015
International audience; In Parallax (2013), her most recent collection of poems, Sinéad Morrissey is attracted to affections “embedded in our cells”, to realities “on the periphery”, to “what happens outside”, to “the accidental”, to “world[s] that can’t be entered”, to “conversation[s] no one else can hear”. She also explores oblique, alternative perspectives that she describes in “The Mutoscope” as “what-the-butler-saw perspective[s]”. Parallax – the optical phenomenon used in astronomy to measure the distance of nearby stars and celestial bodies - serves as the prime metaphor for Morrissey’s poetical and metaphysical quest: the implications of the angle of vision and distance on percepti…
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Graffiti
2020
Emotions play an essential role in aesthetic and art experience. Graffiti is an example of urban visual communication, and it can also be understood as a form of art. Like other works of art, graffiti can evoke different aesthetic emotions in its audiences, such as pleasure, wonder, interest and pride but also disinterest, disappointment or embarrassment, and even anger and disgust—further impacting, for example, how they value this art form. However, few studies have explored what kinds of emotions people feel when they appraise graffiti. This chapter discusses emotions in graffiti using examples from participant interviews in the Purkutaide study. Interview quotes are assessed against the…
The development of a multiliteracy-based approach in language learning: engaging students in aesthetic reading
2018
“At worst it leads to madness.” A phenomenographic approach on how early childhood education professionals experience emotions in teamwork
2022
Teamwork is a key part of almost any person’s working life. At its best, teamwork embodies a good team spirit and increases employee well-being, but at its worst, a team is characterized by mistrust or competition between members where action and development is not possible. In this study we explored what types of emotions early childhood education professionals experience during teamwork. These questions are answered with the help of a phenomenographic approach. As a theoretical frame, in this study, we utilize Warr’s (2012) Affective circumplex model. According to our results the ECE professional’s experienced emotions can be mostly described through the categories of enthusiasm, anxiety,…

The Automated Emotional Music Generator With Emotion and Season Features
2013
Nowadays, there are various types of automated music generating systems to automatically compose music clips instantly; however, those randomly-generated music clips still sounded uncomfortable and discordant. This paper attempts to add with emotion and season features to assist automated music generating systems based on algorithm, and then tries to make all generative music clips sound with harmonious and emotional meaning to listeners. The automated music generator used in this topic is not only based on algorithm but also adopts Thayer’s emotional model as well as four season factors, so all music clips will not only express unique music emotions but also indicate all seasons which may …
Ambivalent Emotions in Music : We Like Sad Music When It Makes Us Happy
2013
We often react ambivalently to a piece of music, simultaneously experiencing both sadness and happiness, and attributing both emotions to the musical content. Two experiments were conducted (1) to empirically test for ambivalent emotions and (2) to investigate the amount of musical information necessary to elicit such emotions. In experiment 1, synthesized musical excerpts were manipulated in tempo (fast/slow) and mode (major/minor). By using unipolar scales, listeners could independently rate how (1) happy and (2) sad the music made them feel, as well as the (3) happiness and (4) sadness perceived in the music. Regarding perceived emotion, happiness was higher in major-fast excerpts, sadne…
The Pleasant Emotion of Sad Music
2013
In general, sad music is thought to cause us to experience sadness, which is considered an unpleasant emotion. As a result, the question arises as to why we listen to sad music if it evokes sadness. We hypothesized that felt and perceived emotion may not actually coincide in this respect: sad music would be perceived as sad, but the experience of listening to sad music would evoke positive emotions. A total of 44 participants listened to mu-sical excerpts and provided data on perceived and felt emotions by rating 62 descriptive words or phrases re-lated to emotions on a scale that ranged from 0 (not at all) to 4 (very much). The results revealed that the sad music was perceived to be more t…
