Thoughts in concert : A multi-method approach to investigate the effect of performers’ focus of attention

2013

Does it matter what a performer feels or thinks about while performing? To investigate the effect of performers’ focus of attention on their performances we asked eight violinists to play the same musical phrase in response to three different instructions. The first instruction was to focus on the technical aspects of playing. The second instruction was to give an expressive performance. Following a sadness-inducing mood induction task, the third instruction was to play while focusing on felt emotions. High quality audio and three-dimensional motion-capture recordings were made of all performances. Subsequently, thirty individuals rated how much they liked each performance, how skilled they…

Parent–Infant Attachment Insecurity and Emotional Eating in Adolescence: Mediation through Emotion Suppression and Alexithymia

2021

Contains fulltext : 233652.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Emotional eating (EE), the propensity to eat in response to emotions, is thought to have its origins in the early parent-infant relationship. This study tested the hypothesis that infant attachment insecurity results in EE in adolescence through the increased use of the emotion regulation strategy suppression of emotions and subsequent alexithymia. At the age of 15 months, parent-infant attachment security (n = 129) was observed with two abbreviated attachment measures: the shortened strange situation procedure (SSSP), and the shortened attachment Q-set (S-AQS). At the age of 12 years, children completed self-report questio…

"You've got the color, but you dont't have the shades" : primary education CLIL teachers' identity negotiation within the Finnish context

2018

This dissertation explores how professional identity is experienced by teachers in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) instruction. In particular, it addresses professional identity in relation to two immediate contexts of teacher activity, i.e. that of the classroom and that of the collegial community. In addition to exploring how these two sides of the professional self give rise to a broader understanding of professional identity, this dissertation also explores aspects of professional agency and the negotiation of emotions in their work. The dissertation is founded on fourteen interviews with Finnish kindergarten and primary education teachers doing CLIL. The data were thema…

Ból po stracie dziecka - wirtualne świadectwa żałoby

2016

Child's death is commonly viewed as the most difficult experience for its parents. This kind of loss and escalation of dismal emotions related to this event allows us to speak of suffering mental pain. Mourning for the loss of child differs significantly from o ther forms of bemoaning; time is rarely a great healer in this case and a sense of void often continues for the entire lifetime. The rangę of emotional relationship with the child is so strong that the childs death is oftentimes interpreted by the parents as the irreversible loss of a tiny part of themselves. The author scrutinizes in the article a few dozen of short movies commemorating childrens deaths. The authoris trying to pinpo…

I Cannot Read Your Eye Expression: Suicide Attempters Have Difficulties in Interpreting Complex Social Emotions

2020

International audience; Background: The ability to differentiate emotions in social contexts is important for dealing with challenging social situations. The Role of Surface Acting in the Relationship between Job Stressors, General Health and Need for Recovery Based on the Frequency of Interactions at …

2022

The aim of the study was to verify whether the frequency of face-to-face interactions with the public at work can reveal differences in how people react to emotional regulation demands. In particular, we investigated the mediating role of surface acting (a strategy of dealing with emotional dissonance) in the relationship between two typical job stressors (workload and mental load) and two outcomes closely related to work-related well-being: employees’ general health and the need for recovery. Prior studies investigating the detrimental effects of emotional dissonance mostly focused on service workers. However, in light of a survey conducted by the European Agency for Safety and Health at W…

”Lauluja surullisin sävelin elämästä luopumisesta” : musiikki kuoleman ja surun merkityksellistäjänä suomalaisten suremisessa ja siihen liittyvissä r…

2018

Musiikkia on käytetty kuolemaan liittyvissä rituaaleissa läpi ihmiskunnan historian.

Dog-Owner Relationship, Owner Interpretations and Dog Personality Are Connected with the Emotional Reactivity of Dogs

2022

Simple Summary The relationship between owner and the dog affects the dog's attachment behaviors and stress coping. In turn, the quality of the relationship may affect owner's interpretations about their dog's behavior. Here, we assessed dogs' emotional responses from heart rate variability and behavioral changes during five different situations. Dog owners evaluated the emotion (valence and arousal) of their dog after each situation. We found that both negative and positive incidents provoked signs of emotional arousal in dogs. Owners detected the dog's arousal especially during fear- and stress-evoking situations. The dog-owner relationship did not affect owners' interpretation of dogs' e…

The Connection of Machiavellianism, Self-control and Induced Emotions with Solving Tasks

2014

The presented research shows that there is a connection between Machiavellianism and the way of solving problem tasks in the situations of inducing chosen emotions. The results obtained in this research show that Machiavellians are characterised by the self-control of the stop type and that the induction of emotions has not such a connection with solving tasks by them as it is in case of people with a low level of Machiavellianism. Moreover, it has been shown that people with high Machiavellianism do not trust other people and are focused on the maximization of profit.
