Durante un periodo de 5 meses durante el curso escolar 2001/2002 se estudió la presencia de bocio en una muestra representativa de 845 escolares de 6 a 14 años de 18 colegios de una Área de Salud de la Comunidad Valenciana. La exploración fue realizada de forma enmascarada por dos observadores (siempre los mismos). El tamaño tiroideo se estableció en seis grados (OA, OB, I, II, III y IV). Ozone effects on the perennial forb Lamottea dianae were studied in an open-top chamber experiment. Ozone was found to induce reductions in CO 2 assimilation and water use efficiency in the leaves of this species. These reductions were mainly related to a decline in the in vivo CO 2 fixation capacity of Rubisco (V c,max), rather than to stomatal limitations or photoinhibitory damage (F v:F m). In addition to chloroplast degeneration, other observed effects were callose accumulation, formation of pectinaceous wart-like cell wall exudates and phloem alterations. During the Pleistocene, southern Calabria was the area through which several mammalian taxa dispersed into the Sicilian island via the Straits of Messina. The rich fossil record of Sicily allowed for the construction of a fairly detailed bio-chronological frame that is dated by correlation of vertebrate bearing deposits with marine deposits. Seed germination reports of high mountain species native to Mount Etna (Sicily)

The germination ability of five endemic species from the high mountain belt of Mt. Etna were studied; they are Astragalus siculus, Erysimum etnense, Senecio squalidus subsp. aethnensis, Silene italica subsp. sicula, and Tanacetum vulgare subsp. siculum. Mature seeds were collected in the field, within an elevation range of 1700–2000 m a.s.l. Different experimental conditions were tested and the best methods with optimal germination results are provided and compared for each species. First germination records are given for 4 out of 5 of the investigated taxa.

Lithodora rosmarinifolia is a rare shrub endemic to the Mediterranean island of Sicily and its minor islands. Propagation of Lithodora rosmarinifolia by standard methods is difficult due to erratic seed production and low percentage of rooted cuttings. As the plant is suited for domestication, the possibility of establishing an efficient in vitro technique for propagation and conservation of this threatened species was investigated.
