Transnasal endoscopy for direct visual control of esophageal stent placement without fluoroscopy

Placement of self-expanding metal stents (SEMSs) is a well-established treatment for esophageal stenosis and postoperative anastomotic leaks. Conventional endoscopic procedures for SEMS placement require fluoroscopic guidance, but transnasal endoscopy (TNE) with ultraslim endoscopes may allow precise stent release under direct visual control without the need for fluoroscopy. This prospectively collected data investigated the feasibility and safety of TNE-guided SEMS placement without fluoroscopy. Preoperative detection of intrathoracic tumor spread of esophageal cancer: endosonography versus computed tomography.

The results of endosonography and computed tomography, using an optimized CT technique, have been compared in the preoperative detection of intrathoracic tumor spread of esophageal cancer. In 22/40 patients with esophageal tumors complete passage of the ultrasonic endoscope was possible. Endosonography was superior to CT in the assessment of early stage of esophageal tumor (T1-2). Out of 9 tumors confined to the esophageal wall, 8 were classified correctly by endosonography and only 5 by computed tomography. Endoscopic dissection of dura and craniotomy with minimal trephines: a preliminary series.

The first nine clinical cases using endoscopic dissection of dura and craniotomy with minimal trephines were performed from June to August 1997 after trial dissection of 19 fresh cadavers conducted at the University of Brno's Pathology Institute in the Czech Republic. These procedures involved the refinement of craniofacial and intracranial surgical techniques using the endoscope and prototype instruments. These dissections demonstrated that intracranial structures can be explored using an endoscope without encumbrance, and that major craniofacial surgeries may also be performed with minor incisions and minimal craniotomies. Liquid crystal lens array for 3D microscopy and endoscope application

In this paper, we demonstrate two liquid crystal (LC) lens array devices for 3D microscope and 3D endoscope applications respectively. Compared with the previous 3D biomedical system, the proposed LC lens arrays are not only switchable between 2D and 3D modes, but also are able to adjust focus in both modes. The multi-function liquid crystal lens (MFLC-lens) array with dual layer electrode has diameter 1.42 mm, which is much smaller than the conventional 3D endoscope with double fixed lenses.
