Optimal standalone data center renewable power supply using an offline optimization approach
2022
Abstract Because of the increasing energy consumption of data centers and their C O 2 emissions, the ANR DATAZERO2 project aims to design autonomous data centers running solely on local renewable energy coupled with storage devices to overcome the intermittency issue. In order to optimize the use of renewable energy and storage devices, a MILP solver is usually in charge of assigning the power to be supplied to the data center. However, in order to reduce the computation time and make the approach scalable, it would be more appropriate to use a polynomial time algorithm. This paper aims at showing and proving that it is possible to provide an optimal power profile via a deterministic algori…
Foster Carbon-Neutrality in the Built Environment: A Blockchain-Based Approach for the Energy Interaction Among Buildings
2022
Decarbonizing urban environments and reducing their energy consumption is one of modern society biggest commitments. In this regard, both the scientific community and international governments have been giving special consideration on improving the energy-environmental performance of mostly single buildings; recently the focus has been shifting towards a broader Positive Energy District (PED)/ Energy Community (EC) vision, from small clustered group of buildings to neighborhoods up until urban settlements. In this respect, integrating the use of renewable energy resources (RES) and actively involving building users can have a significant environmental impact on local areas. Within this fram…
Boosting Design Space Explorations with Existing or Automatically Learned Knowledge
2012
During development, processor architectures can be tuned and configured by many different parameters. For benchmarking, automatic design space explorations (DSEs) with heuristic algorithms are a helpful approach to find the best settings for these parameters according to multiple objectives, e.g. performance, energy consumption, or real-time constraints. But if the setup is slightly changed and a new DSE has to be performed, it will start from scratch, resulting in very long evaluation times. To reduce the evaluation times we extend the NSGA-II algorithm in this article, such that automatic DSEs can be supported with a set of transformation rules defined in a highly readable format, the fuz…
The European Standards for Energy Efficiency in Buildings: an analysis of the Evolution with Reference to a Case Study
2019
The improvement of the energy efficiency of building stocks represents an important contribution for the reduction of the energy consumption in the European Union (EU), along with the decrease of greenhouse gases emissions. In this aim both the public administrations and the technical experts need reliable calculation methodology to assess buildings’ energy performance. In this framework, despite the recent publication of the Standard EN ISO 52016, that deeply modifies the approach to the energy building simulation by introducing a new hourly dynamic calculation model, the current normative framework (EN ISO 13790) will maintain its validity until the incorporation of the new Standard in th…
Demand side management and Distributed on Site actions benefits
2013
Global warming and energy demand are nowadays becoming one of the major issues of the third millennium, mainly because human activities seem to have a clear impact on the raise of CO2 emissions as never it has been experienced in the past. Among the different factors affecting CO2 emissions, energy demand from buildings constitutes one of the most important actors. Energy Management (EM) actions can reduce the energy consumption of the system and minimize peaks-level, by using a distributed control over every house. These local actions can greatly contribute to reduce the impact on the global CO2 emissions. An evaluation of the potential energy saving and CO2 emissions reduction on building…
Investigating energy saving potential in a big shopping center through ventilation control
2019
Abstract This paper investigates energy saving measures for the ventilation system of large shopping centers. This kind of buildings is characterized by high yearly energy consumptions, because of the high level of operating hours and the frequent use of obsolete technologies. In the analyzed case studies, three big Do It Yourself (DIY) shops, located in Italy, are considered. Two different approaches are considered, they are aimed at reducing the annual energy consumption for the indoor air exchange of the sales area. The first considered retrofit solution consists in the installation of heat recovery exchangers, reducing the energy demand for the air thermal treatment without changing the…

A Validation Methodology for a Combined Heating Cooling and Power (CHCP) Pilot Plant
2004
A great number of variables significantly influence the energetic, environmental and economic results of CHP (Combined Heating and Power) and CHCP (Combined Heating Cooling and Power) plants operation, and as a consequence their project activity is rather complex. In order to select the best layout and properly size the machines, detailed data on hourly electric, thermal, and cooling demand are necessary, so that a series of plant life cycle simulations may have to be carried out. Unfortunately, such detailed data are rarely available, because energy consumptions data for existing buildings are usually derived from aggregated monthly or bimonthly gas and electricity bills. Even more difficu…
Characterization of cooling loads in the wine industry and novel seasonal indicator for reliable assessment of energy saving through retrofit of chil…
2020
Abstract The food sector is a major consumer of energy and growing efforts are being made in the search for solutions that will guarantee the efficient and sustainable use of energy resources. Among the different sectors, wineries are attracting particular interest due to the continuous growth of the global market and production. Surveys conducted in the winemaking sector have highlighted the importance of performing accurate energy audits and have identified the installation of efficient refrigeration systems as a promising solution in a variety of cases. Unfortunately, the savings achievable by efficient cooling technologies are often estimated using simplified approaches which do not tak…
Distributed Pseudo-Gossip Algorithm and Finite-Length Computational Codes for Efficient In-Network Subspace Projection
2013
In this paper, we design a practical power-efficient algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in order to obtain, in a distributed manner, the projection of an observed sampled spatial field on a subspace of lower dimension. This is an important problem that is motivated in various applications where there are well defined subspaces of interest (e.g., spectral maps in cognitive radios). As opposed to traditional Gossip Algorithms used for subspace projection, where separation of channel coding and computation is assumed, our algorithm combines binary finite-length Computational Coding and a novel gossip-like protocol with certain communication rules, achieving important savings in conve…
