Integrating the Compliance Function into the Legal Department

2015

This chapter addresses a governance issue: whether it is permissible under the insurance supervisory regime of Solvency II for an insurance undertaking to merge its compliance function with its legal department. The Solvency II provisions in fact do not address the legal department of an insurance undertaking. But the tasks and powers of a legal department are in part the same as those of the compliance function under art. 46, para. 1 of the Solvency II Directive. The conclusion is thus: General insurance supervisory regime principles such as functional segregation and functional independence do not prohibit such a merger. Indeed, such a merger would seem to be advisable in many instances i…

A speech-act-based office modeling approach

1988

In this paper methods and principles that help to analyze offices as systems of communicative action are explored. In communicative action, office agents create commitments through symbolic means. A SAMPO (Speech-Act-based office Modeling aPprOach), which studies office activities as a series of speech acts creating, maintaining, modifying, reporting, and terminating commitments, is presented. The main steps and methods in the office system specification are outlined and their application illustrated through a simple example. In the final section advantages and disadvantages in the SAMPO are noted and some research directions for the future are suggested.

Factors of Development of the Management of the Design Education in Latvia

2015

<p>The author proceeds with the discussion of significant problems in design industry and education in Europe and Latvia. This research is devoted to several important aspects in the development of design education in Latvia. Design education which is mainly based on the meaning of design as an aesthetic component of products, environment or communication, includes only a narrow range of specializations in the traditional fields of design. This concept affects the structure of design education and an beliefs of the areas in which designers will be able to work. Insufficiency of public awareness and understanding of the essence of design results in limited demand of design products and…

Robotics Studies in Europe

2012

This paper describes the organization and teaching methodologies for mechanics and robotics related subjects in the European Erasmus Mundus master programmes EMARO (European master in Advanced Robotics), and VIBOT (master courses in VIsion & roBOTics). The structure of these masters is overviewed, the experience in designing and managing them is outlined and we point out the common effort for a global reach of these programmes and to build a transnational teaching architecture.

Smart Sustainable Development Approach and its Implementation in Engineering Organizations

2014

This paper explores the concept of sustainability in engineering systems and proposes a smart conceptual framework for engineering organization development. Sustainability is a critically complex goal for enterprise activity and development. Sustainability in the engineering area requires a comprehensive and continue approach because, a) engineering activities are ubiquitous in society, b) of the high importance of engineering applications in the development of the companies and of the world, and c) technological support becomes imminent in a dynamic economic environment and sustained in large part by technological advances. This paper aims to provide to the engineering environment a smart …

Graduate Studies of Global Change at the University of Latvia

2010

In 2008 the University of Latvia (UL) completed an 18-month project of innovation – design, preparation and pilot-test of a 4-semester programme of trans-disciplinary graduate studies in “science, global change, and technologies for sustainable development” based on the experience the project team had acquired during 1997–2006 endorsing studies in “physics and technologies for sustainable development” and organizing two international conferences on “integrative approaches towards sustainability”. Within the project activities 25 members from faculties of natural sciences of the UL prepared and tested innovative courses of a 2 semester pilot programme comprising 4 modules, the audience being…

Robotics and automation for societal good : global South challenges and technology-policy considerations

2018

Robotics and automation and artificial intelligence technologies hold immense potential in addressing many of the societal challenges as exemplified in the sustainable development goals of the 2030 agenda of the United Nations. They have the potential not only to increase the standard of living in developed countries, but to improve the quality of life in the so-called «Global South». This article discusses underlying challenges and technology-policy considerations when deploying emerging technologies in developing and developed economies. Various examples and implementations in collaboration with humanitarians, researchers and developers, and professional organizations across the globe are…

Sustainability in Road Design: A Methodological Proposal for the Drafting of Guideline.

2012

Abstract This paper, starting from the U.S. experience (USGBC LEED) in the building field, through GBC ITALIA, underlines the need of a specific methodological approach in our country for a roads sustainable design. Therefore, we propose criteria for the methodological approach of a handbook of sustainability. In this guideline required and voluntary project requirements are identified; for each of these objectives, benefits, standards of reference and its methods of implementation are suggested. The above guideline, using detailed development tools (VA, LCA), could provide guidance to the road-designer in the evaluation and selection of strategies to drawing-up project performance standard…
