The Artistic Commitment of Kenyon Cox: An American Neoclassical Artist

2016

At the end of the nineteenth century, the United States had undergone deep transformations. The second Industrial Revolution had created huge amounts of new wealth and power. This led to an alteration of the urban social fabric and to a repositioning of the country on the international scene.Since the 1870s, the American Renaissance had been a vehicle for the diffusion of new values and new concepts. As a broad neoclassical movement in the arts, it was committed to a rewriting of the country’s national past.At the time, Kenyon Cox (1856-1919) distinguished himself as one of the major artists of the movement, but also as one of its most influential critics and theorists. David Rosenthal’s Tirant lo Blanc turns 30

2014

The groundbreaking English language translation of Tirant lo Blanc by New York poet and academic David Rosenthal remains dominant three decades after its initial, and celebrated, release. Rosenthal’s controversially fluid and concise rendering of the Valencian classic survived a serious challenge 20 years ago by a more literal version from a well-meaning amateur translator and journeyman academic backed by a leading U.S.-based Catalan scholar. The article reviews the controversy and compares the two versions, adding comments from some of the key critics.

2011

The article takes Zachary Baqué's study of Los Angeles in the films of David Lynch as a starting point to explore David Lynch's Hollywood movies. The author contends that the films offer more than a satirical representation of a corrupt, unhealthy system which threatens dreams and artistic creativity, or a parodic play on Hollywood genre and narrative conventions. Rather, Hollywood is a character, a presence, revealed as both horizontal and vertical, physical and abstract, evoking the city, the studio system, cinema and dreams, so that the satire, the visual motifs and clichés and the topography of Hollywood, and the references to Hollywood films, constitute a complex fabric of subjectivity…

Analysing Lexical Density and Lexical Diversity in University Students’ Written Discourse

2015

Abstract This study analyses both lexical density and lexical diversity in the written production of two groups of first year students at the Universitat de Valencia at the beginning and end of one-semester teaching period. These results were compared with those obtained by a third group of students aiming at level C2. Lexical density was tested using Textalyser ( http://textalyser.net ) and lexical frequency used the software RANGE (Nation and Heatly, 1994). Our results prove that the students from both groups at level B1 show the same progression between writing tasks 1 and 3. Furthermore, we can claim that it is possible to obtain a reliable measure of lexical richness which is stable ac…

English Language and European Union: A Corpus-Based Study of EU Secondary Legislation

2023

To this date, English is one of the working languages of the EU and, most importantly, it is the ‘de facto’ lingua franca of the EU, as the source language of most European documents is mainly English (Crystal 2017). Despite Brexit, English remains the most studied language in Europe (Kużelewska 2020), not to mention the fact that it is the language of globalization. However, the UK’s exit from the EU prompts the question as to what will be the development of English in the post-Brexit landscape. In light of this, the present article aims at conducting a linguistic analysis of Euro-English in order to assess if and how such type of English differs from the Standard English (SE). If yes, is…

Teacher Educators’ Professional Identity in English-Medium Instruction at a Finnish University

2021

Publisher Copyright: © 2021, University of Ljubljana. All rights reserved. The study is theoretically premised on the interconnected concepts of pedagogical doing, pedagogical being, pedagogical…

Leksinių samplaikų sąrašo tikslinimas: bandymas taikyti "Formulex" metodą

2016

Pavyzdžiui, keturžodės anglų kalbos samplaikos at the same time, the same time it ir but at the same yra automatiškai generuojamos kompiuterio programa kaip tekstyne pasikartojančios sekos.
