Selected enzyme activities in mouse cardiac muscle during training and terminated training

1984

We studied the effects of running-training, heavy exercise and termination of training on the heart weight, the ratio heart to body weight and the cardiac muscle activities of actomyosin ATPase, citrate synthase, succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome c oxidase, malate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase and beta-glucuronidase with adult male NMRI-mice. Stable hypertrophy (6-7%), estimated by the ratio heart or ventricle weight to body weight, was achieved by 28 exercises and it was dependent on the running speed (20 vs. 25 m X min-1). The withdrawal of training for 5-61 days did not permanently decrease the heart weight or the heart to body weight ratio to the level of sedentary controls. The act…

Labour Mobility in Construction: European Implications of the Laval un Partneri Dispute with Swedish Labour

2006

The accession to the European Union of new member states from central and eastern Europe, with weak trade union movements, poorly developed social dialogue and inferior working conditions, has been viewed as a threat to regulated labour standards in the EU-15. This article examines a high-profile labour dispute arising from the conditions of Latvian construction contract labour in Sweden. The dispute exposes weaknesses in the protective floor of minimum standards offered by the posted workers Directive. It also goes to the core of the debate about the preservation of a ‘European social model’ and the proposed Services Directive.

Sequential acquisition of cacophony calcium currents, sodium channels and voltage-dependent potassium currents affects spike shape and dendrite growt…

2014

During metamorphosis the CNS undergoes profound changes to accommodate the switch from larval to adult behaviors. In Drosophila and other holometabolous insects, adult neurons differentiate either from respecified larval neurons, newly born neurons, or are born embryonically but remain developmentally arrested until differentiation during pupal life. This study addresses the latter in the identified Drosophila flight motoneuron 5. In situ patch-clamp recordings, intracellular dye fills and immunocytochemistry address the interplay between dendritic shape, excitability and ionic current development. During pupal life, changes in excitability and spike shape correspond to a stereotyped, progr…

Exercising recommendations for paroxysmal AF in young and middle-aged athletes (PAFIYAMA) syndrome.

2017

We have recently described a new syndrome: strenuous endurance exercise-related atrial fibrillation (AF) under the acronym of ‘paroxysmal AF in young and middle-aged athletes’ (‘PAFIYAMA’). Provided that other risk factors for AF and underlying conditions have been excluded (1), the diagnostic criteria for this syndrome entail a number of conditions, classified as major and minor. An enhanced risk of AF has been clearly documented in endurance athletes (top-class, elite and recreational) (2-5), and such risk typically ranges between 1.2- to 15-fold compared to the general, sedentary population (the better cardiovascular fitness, the higher incidence of AF) (6-11). Anecdotally, the last auth…

Amlodepine induced gingival enlargement - presentation of a clinical case series

2011

Objectives: Gingival enlargement as an adverse effects of drugs has been found to be long associated with the use of anticonvulsants; phenytoin, anti-hypertensives; calcium channel blockers and immunosuppressants; cyclosporine. Nifedepine was found to cause gingival overgrowth with an incidence ranging from 15-85%. However, Amlodepine a relatively newer agent of the same group which is being routinely and vastly prescribed either alone or as part of combination therapy to middle to older aged adults has also been found to exhibit this adverse effect with very few cases reported till date. The effect of the dose of amlodepine on the severity of gingival enlargement needs to be assessed. Stud…

Gingival hyperplasia as an early manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia. A retrospective review

2019

Background We study the prevalence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) among patients with severe gingival enlargement. Material and Methods We retrospective reviewed the clinical records of patients with severe gingival enlargement, between 2011 and 2018. The Saxer and Mühlemann index were used to measure inflammation and gingival bleeding. The degree of dental mobility was measured by the Nyman and Lindhe technique. Results A correlation analysis was carried out to test whether there were any associations among the different variables. In the sample of 117 patients the mean gingival bleeding index was ≥3 and the degree of dental mobility ≥2.3. 1.7% of patients, with severe gingival hyperplasi…

Arquitectura y desarrollo urbano. Notas sobre el ensanche de Valencia de 1884

2014

[EN] The city development of Valencia, after its walls were demolished, starts in 1884 with the Enlargement Project by the architects José Calvo Tomás, Luis Ferreres Soler and Joaquín MªArnau Miramón. These three architects were members with number of Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos and they left important buildings on the new streets created according to alignments designed in the project. A significant work of architecture, later increased with another brilliant contributions, as those of Carlos Carbonell, Jose Mª Manuel Cortina, Francisco Mora or Javier Goerlich, which forms a new urban landscape of cosmopolitan stamp with main two Grandes Vías. All this characterizes nineteenth…

Opolskie manifestacje w obronie demokracji

2021

Opole is a provincial city of the smallest region in the country. Nevertheless, its inhabitants manifest their views on matters important from their point of view. The analysis of the largest protests in re- cent years in this region shows that the inhabitants of Opole most often and loudly demonstrate in de- fense of democracy — both at the national and local level. In the chapter Opole demonstrations in de- fense of democracy, Katarzyna Daniel proposes an analysis of two problems that caused Opole inhab- itants to take to the streets, i.e. protests in defense of the broadly understood judiciary initiated in 2017 and demonstrations and strikes caused by the en- largement of the administrat…

L’ampliamento come occasione di recupero della memoria e dell’identità

2012

We present the enlargement plan of an isolated cemetery in a small town of the west Sicily as it exemplifies some way to carry out the design for an “addition”. The enlargement faces a still readable and characteristic nineteenth-century building. Even introducing unavoidable innovative characteristics, the architecture we designed tries to resolve the difficult relationship between the new portion and the old cemetery, bell shaped, in steep slope above the town. The recovery of this place for collective memory, once realized as a closed enclosure, is realized by the mediation of a space which seeks to maintain, recover and reinforce the identity of places altered in the last years by uncon…

Sectoral Business Cycle Synchronization in the European Union

2009

This paper analyses sectoral business cycle synchronization in an enlarged European Union using annual data for the period 1980-2005. In particular, we try to identify which sector for each country is driving the aggregate output business cycle synchronization. Overall, the sectors that provide the most relevant contribution are Industry, Building and Construction, and Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry. In contrast, the Services sector, the largest one in terms of valued added share, shows a relative low business cycle synchronization and volatility, implying that it contributes only marginally to the aggregate output business cycle synchronization.
