Perceived threat and prejudice towards immigrants in Finland : A study among early, middle, and late Finnish adolescents

ABSTRACTUsing integrated threat theory, this study examined how perceived threat, or fear of immigrants, manifests among early, middle, and late Finnish adolescents, and the relationship between perceived threat and prejudice among early, middle, and late adolescents. The sample consisted of 795 Finnish adolescents between 11 and 19 years of age. Realistic and symbolic threats were the most perceived threats and were more prevalent among late adolescents. There was a positive relationship between prejudice and realistic threat, and between prejudice and symbolic threat, but a negative relationship between prejudice and negative stereotyping, and this relationship remained relatively stable …

Artikkeli tarkastelee maaseutumaisella alueella asuvien maahanmuuttajien kotoutumista useiden eri tekijöiden kautta. Tutkimuksessa on hyödynnetty sekä kvantitatiivista postikyselyä että kvalitatiivista teemahaastattelua. Kotoutumisesta piirtyvä kuva näyttää useimpien maahanmuuttajien kohdalla myönteiseltä. Erityisesti virolaisten tilanne on selvästi muita valoisampi: heidän suomen kielen taitonsa on muita ryhmiä parempi, ja he ovat työllistyneet ja onnistuneet vakauttamaan työmarkkina-asemaansa muita ryhmiä paremmin. In 1949, Simone de Beauvoir cited the fairly unknown author Poulain de la Barre in an epigraph for The Second Sex (1949). When reading The Second Sex, one soon realizes that there are profound similarities between the two authors’ discussions of women’s situation. Both Poulain and Beauvoir view the subjection of women as a process that includes choice as well as force. Liberation necessarily requires overcoming opinions rooted in custom and prejudice. Abstract Pioneers of organic farming often faced social challenges as their innovative ideas on agriculture not only encountered opposition in the conventional farming community, but led to stigmatization of organic farmers as social deviants. In this study, we examine what kind of stigma management strategies pioneer organic farmers engage with in order to cultivate an alternative positive image of themselves. Our research is based on the interviews with 14 pioneer organic farmers. As many European countries have language proficiency requirements for obtaining citizenship, language testing is a possible source of social inequality. The ‘Broken Finnish’ project has been set up to ensure test fairness by addressing the proficiency rating in the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (NCLP) test for Finnish in Finland, with a special focus on perceptions of pronunciation and ‘accent’ in relation to the examinee’s L1 and how the raters recognise them. There is a growing number of various ethnic groups in Finland. The attitudes and categorizations that host country nationals have and make regarding migrants is frequently researched. The attitudes that migrants have towards other migrants has, however, been much less researched. This paper provides an in-depth analysis that considers what factors are behind the attitudes that migrants form of other migrants and how these impact categorizations and hierarchies. Tässä tutkielmassa kartoitetaan kuvaa, joka suomalaisissa viidennen ja kuudennen luokan maantiedon oppikirjoissa annetaan ihmisistä Euroopan ulkopuolella. Tutkielma on tehty sisällönanalyysin keinoin. Selkeiden stereotyyppisten kuvien lisäksi pyritään löytämään myös piileviä, vähemmän selviä stereotypioita.
