Feedback-based continuous improvement measures on the use of short mathematical videos in university education
2019
The main objective of this work is to make a proposal for continuous improvement on the use of short educational videos in order to improve the teaching-learning process at Mathematics I, a university subject present in the curriculum of several social-economical degrees such as Bussiness Administration, Economics, or International Business at the Universitat de València (Spain). In order to enhance the quality of this process, it is necessary to make inquiries of the impressions that the students have about it. In this particular case, we wanted to know the perception that students had after the use of short educational videos of applied mathematics contents during the course. These vide…
What Factors have an Influence on A Quality Teaching Practice in Sciences?
2012
Abstract This paper aims to know to what extent in-service teachers who have not participated in science teaching training courses neither have performed any research in this field develop a quality teaching practice and what factors have influenced to achieve it. Questionnaires and non-participating observation protocols about the classroom work have been used as well as semi-structured interviews with a sample of teachers to obtain data. These instruments try to characterize the teaching action and determine what factors and in which degrees have influenced the performance of a quality science teaching activity.
Los Polímeros en la Educación Secundaria Obligatoria y Bachillerato en España: Análisis de Libros de Texto y Opinión del Profesorado
2015
Even though the study of polymers is included in the school secondary curriculum in Spain, all the signs are that this topic is not being adequately addressed in the classroom. For this reason, this paper focuses on two key factors for polymers teaching and learning at secondary level: teachers and textbooks. A qualitative methodology, based on semi-structured interviews and a content analysis of textbooks, has been used. Six High School teachers have participated in this research. Attempts have been made to find out teachers' opinion about introducing contents of polymers in the classroom by means of semi-structured interviews. The content analysis of textbooks used in many schools of Spai…
Spanish teachers' views of the goals of science education in secondary education
2002
The purpose of this work is to find out teachers' opinions regarding the goals and objectives of the teaching of science, within the frame of educational reform. We attempt to disclose to what extent educational thinking gives priority to the training of the students in scientific concepts, laws and theories needed in further courses (propedeutic training) and how this thinking pays less attention to the so-called scientific literacy which is meant to be the main object of the teaching of science according to the designers of the curriculum. To achieve this, we carried out a multiple and convergent experimental design with a number of samples of teachers. We found a confirmation that in sec…
Science in early childhood education: the perception of Spanish teachers during initial training
2019
Science teaching is present in the curriculum at all levels of education. However, little research has been done into what content is taught, how it is taught and what pupils actually learn at the pre-primary stage. In this paper, we will study student teachers' perception about what science teaching is being carried out in Second Cycle of Childhood Education classrooms (3-4-5 years). Using their experiences from teaching practice, a number of pre-school education degree students have ompleted a questionnaire through which to understand better the educational reality under study. The results reveal the limited attention given to certain content areas and the absence of key activities throug…
Applied mathematics concepts Self-learning through the use of short educational videos
2019
It is sometimes difficult for the student to actively participate in the learning process due to the difficulty that teachers find when trying to cover all the contents of a course with sufficient time and attention. This lack of time prevents professors from properly stimulating the student's active participation in class, which is always necessary for achieving a deep and significant learning. The present paper describes a flipped-classroom-based methodology that fosters autonomous learning of applied mathematics contents through the use of short educational videos. The use of on-line media learning resources has dramatically increased in the last decade in higher education, not only unde…
Investigación e innovación en la Enseñanza de las Ciencias. Necesidad de una mayor vinculación.
2013
This paper analyzes the relationship between Research and Innovation in Science Teaching, showing a worrying disconnection of both activities. Two possible causes of this situation are considered: firstly, most teachers don¿t pay attention to science education research and even ignore the specific journals where this research is published; and secondly, researchers view innovation as mere application of research. As a result of these analyses, some proposals are advanced in order to make research more useful to improve science teaching and learning.
Satisfaction analysis of 'food safety and quality management' master degree's students with the 'comunicat' methodology for the enhancement of the 'e…
2019
The main goal of the present study is to analyze the satisfaction level of the students from the master degree "Food Safety and Quality Management" with the "ComunicaT" methodology, which was applied to improve the mastery level of the "Effective Oral Communication" student outcome. This methodology is being developed under an innovative and educational improvement research project funded by the Universitat Politècnica de València, and the general idea behind it is that the student, after performing an auto-diagnosis test, becomes capable to autonomously improve its oral communication skills. Thereby, the student, starting from his initial mastery level on this student outcome, follows a se…
La alfabetización digital y los géneros discursivos. Un proyecto de escritura digital con alumnos de cuarto de secundaria obligatoria (15-16 años)
2009
The concept of digital literacy, as a set of abilities to use Information and Communication Technologies, has gained nowadays a dimension which goes beyond instrumentalityability to use different technological resources and could be defined as the acquisition of competences related to the search, analysis, selection and communication of data and information which allow students to transform information into knowledge. Having this in mind and within the didactic tradition of language projects, we have carried out an experience involving students of 4th year of ESO (Compulsory Secondary School) during the school year 2006-2007. It has basically consisted in the elaboration of language and lit…
Encouraging to read: a proposal to improve reading comprehension and literary competence in university students
2018
The objective of this article is to present an activity related to reading at university, in order to promote reading in students through various readings and the recommendation of them to colleagues. Several problems of our students (who have received literary training in their compulsory and post-compulsory studies and are, in theory, quite compententes) appeared at the time of facing the reading of texts, both literary and academic. On the other hand, the activity provides us with a great deal of information about the expectations, the difficulties, the devices, the themes and the reading strategies used in everyday life and in the university studies. In conclusion, we highlight the posi…
