THE ENTERIC NERVOUS SYSTEM: NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND EMERGING CONCEPTS

2011

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is an integrative neuronal network, organized in two ganglionated plexuses, myenteric and submucosal, composed of neurons and enteric glial cells, controlling the activity of the smooth muscle of the gut, mucosal secretion and blood flow. The ENS contains as many neurons as the spinal cord, and the functional and chemical diversity of enteric neurons closely resembles that of the central nervous system. This highly integrated neural system is also referred to as the ‘brain-in-the-gut’, because of its capability to function in the absence of nerve inputs from the central nervous system.

Toward Mechanistic Design of Surrogate Buffers for Dissolution Testing of pH-Dependent Drug Delivery Systems

2020

The in vivo dissolution of enteric-coated (EC) products is often overestimated by compendial in vitro dissolution experiments. It is of great interest to mimic the in vivo conditions as closely as possible in vitro in order to predict the in vivo behavior of EC dosage forms. The reason behind this is the overly high buffering capacity of the common compendial buffers compared to the intestinal bicarbonate buffer. However, a bicarbonate-based buffer is technically difficult to handle due to the need for continuous sparging of the media with CO2 to maintain the desired buffer pH. Therefore, bicarbonate buffers are not commonly used in routine practice and a non-volatile alternative is of inte…

Achalasie im Kindesalter: Eine separate Entität?

2007

Background Achalasia in childhood is rare, also the etiology and the pathogenesis of the early onset ort he disease is practically unknown. Little is known about the neuropathological changes in structure of the esophageal wall in non-hereditary, sporadic achalasia in children and ist differentiation to that in adults. The aim of our study was to examine the morphological properties or high-pressure zone of the lower esophageal sphincter in children who had undergone a Heller myotomy because of achalasia as well as to compare them with the pathological findings in adults. Methods Muscle biopsies of the smooth musculature, a 20 x 10 mm long segment of the myenteric of the distal esophagus (l…

A case of infective endocarditis due to Salmonella enterica phagetype 35. First report

2017

Infective Endocarditis (IE) has high morbidity and mortality. To date, in addition to classic Gram-positive pathogens were isolated exigent Gram negative bacteria responsible of endocarditis as A. baumannii, A. lwoffii, C. burnetii, Bartonella, Chlamydia and Legionella. We report our experience about the isolation of Salmonella enterica phagetype 35 (PT35) from blood heart cavity of a 74-year-old woman after having consumed a portion of baked pasta bought in a rotisserie. Cardiovascular infections due to Salmonella enterica are infrequently reported, so their clinical features, prognosis, and optimal treatment are not completely known. To the best of our knowledge, after careful evaluation …

Insufficienza Celiaco Mesenterica

2022

The Friedreich's Ataxia protein frataxin modulates DNA base excision repair in prokaryotes and mammals

2010

DNA-repair mechanisms enable cells to maintain their genetic information by protecting it from mutations that may cause malignant growth. Recent evidence suggests that specific DNA-repair enzymes contain ISCs (iron–sulfur clusters). The nuclearencoded protein frataxin is essential for the mitochondrial biosynthesis of ISCs. Frataxin deficiency causes a neurodegenerative disorder named Friedreich's ataxia in humans. Various types of cancer occurring at young age are associated with this disease, and hence with frataxin deficiency. Mice carrying a hepatocyte-specific disruption of the frataxin gene develop multiple liver tumours for unresolved reasons. In the present study, we show that frata…
