Entropy-Based Detection of Complexity and Nonlinearity in Short-Term Heart Period Variability under different Physiopathological States
2020
We compare different estimators of a popular en-tropy-based nonlinear dynamic measure, i.e. the conditional entropy (CE), as regards their ability to assess the complexity and nonlinearity of short-term heart rate variability (HRV). The CE is computed using binning, kernel and nearest neighbor entropy estimators in HRV time series measured from young, old and post-myocardial infarction patients studied at rest and during orthostatic stress. We find that the three estimators yield similar patterns of CE, but different patterns of nonlinear dynamics, across groups and conditions. These results suggest that the strategy for CE estimation is not crucial for the quantification of complexity, but…
Arabic Named Entity Recognition: A Feature-Driven Study
2009
The named entity recognition task aims at identifying and classifying named entities within an open-domain text. This task has been garnering significant attention recently as it has been shown to help improve the performance of many natural language processing applications. In this paper, we investigate the impact of using different sets of features in three discriminative machine learning frameworks, namely, support vector machines, maximum entropy and conditional random fields for the task of named entity recognition. Our language of interest is Arabic. We explore lexical, contextual and morphological features and nine data-sets of different genres and annotations. We measure the impact …
Gesture Modeling by Hanklet-Based Hidden Markov Model
2015
In this paper we propose a novel approach for gesture modeling. We aim at decomposing a gesture into sub-trajectories that are the output of a sequence of atomic linear time invariant (LTI) systems, and we use a Hidden Markov Model to model the transitions from the LTI system to another. For this purpose, we represent the human body motion in a temporal window as a set of body joint trajectories that we assume are the output of an LTI system. We describe the set of trajectories in a temporal window by the corresponding Hankel matrix (Hanklet), which embeds the observability matrix of the LTI system that produced it. We train a set of HMMs (one for each gesture class) with a discriminative a…
Exact controllability to trajectories for entropy solutions to scalar conservation laws in several space dimensions
2019
We describe a new method which allows us to obtain a result of exact controllability to trajectories of multidimensional conservation laws in the context of entropy solutions and under a mere non-degeneracy assumption on the flux and a natural geometric condition.
Harmony perception and regularity of spike trains in a simple auditory model
2013
A probabilistic approach for investigating the phenomena of dissonance and consonance in a simple auditory sensory model, composed by two sensory neurons and one interneuron, is presented. We calculated the interneuron’s firing statistics, that is the interspike interval statistics of the spike train at the output of the interneuron, for consonant and dissonant inputs in the presence of additional "noise", representing random signals from other, nearby neurons and from the environment. We find that blurry interspike interval distributions (ISIDs) characterize dissonant accords, while quite regular ISIDs characterize consonant accords. The informational entropy of the non-Markov spike train …

Connectivity Influences on Nonlinear Dynamics in Weakly-Synchronized Networks: Insights from Rössler Systems, Electronic Chaotic Oscillators, Model a…
2019
Natural and engineered networks, such as interconnected neurons, ecological and social networks, coupled oscillators, wireless terminals and power loads, are characterized by an appreciable heterogeneity in the local connectivity around each node. For instance, in both elementary structures such as stars and complex graphs having scale-free topology, a minority of elements are linked to the rest of the network disproportionately strongly. While the effect of the arrangement of structural connections on the emergent synchronization pattern has been studied extensively, considerably less is known about its influence on the temporal dynamics unfolding within each node. Here, we present a compr…
On the Evaluation of Images Complexity: A Fuzzy Approach
2006
The inherently multidimensional problem of evaluating the complexity of an image is of a certain relevance in both computer science and cognitive psychology. Computer scientists usually analyze spatial dimensions, to deal with automatic vision problems, such as feature-extraction. Psychologists seem more interested in the temporal dimension of complexity, to explore attentional models. Is it possible, by merging both approaches, to define an more general index of visual complexity? We have defined a fuzzy mathematical model of visual complexity, using a specific entropy function; results obtained by applying this model to pictorial images have a strong correlation with ones from an experime…
Characterization of ellipsoids through an overdetermined boundary value problem of Monge–Ampère type
2014
Abstract The study of the optimal constant in an Hessian-type Sobolev inequality leads to a fully nonlinear boundary value problem, overdetermined with non-standard boundary conditions. We show that all the solutions have ellipsoidal symmetry. In the proof we use the maximum principle applied to a suitable auxiliary function in conjunction with an entropy estimate from affine curvature flow.
