The fissures of the nation: tensions and political-religious readings on the conquest of America in the 18th century

2020

Bernardine Evaristo’s The Emperor’s Babe: Re-narrating Roman Britannia, De-essentialising European History

2019

Bernardine Evaristo’s The Emperor’s Babe (2001) contributes to the imaginative disentanglement of the traditional British ethnicity-and-nation nexus and questions the related founding myth of racial purity by featuring the character of Zuleika, a young black woman who is born of Sudanese parents in Roman London. Through the depiction of Zuleika, Evaristo offers a subversive reshaping of some versions of the official British national history in the context of a wider revision of the European classical past. However, in spite of its temporal setting, Evaristo’s historical novel simultaneously engages with contemporary issues of gendered racialisation and national belonging. In its highly orch…

ALCUNE CONSIDERAZIONI SULLA COSIDDETTA LEX ZIELIŃSKI E SULLA GENESI DELL’ODISSEA

2022

The article traces the story of the so-called Lex Zieliński, according to which Homer is incapable of dealing with contemporary events at the same time and must therefore narrate them one by one. It examines the different interpretations of the law and the objections raised by various scholars in the last century, highlighting, however, that in some cases the theories of the Polish scholar are the only convincing way to explain some passages (few, but still present) of the Iliad and the Odyssey, which if understood according to modern narrative logic would be incomprehensible. Zieliński’s studies, therefore, at least in their original form, free of subsequent additions and modifications, he…

Leaf and stem anatomy in eight Hypericum species (Clusiaceae).

2013

Abstract - Foliar micromorphology, epicuticular wax morphology and anatomical features of leaves and stem, particularly secondary xylem, were examined with light microscopy, general and histochemical staining and scanning electron microscopy in eight Hypericum species. Outer tegument tissue and type of secondary xylem are determining characteristics. Secondary xylem is ring-porous in H. perforatum, H. perfoliatum, H. tetrapterum, H. triquetrifolium, H. androsaemum and H. hircinum. In H. aegypticum and H. pubescens xylem is diffuse-porous, which is considered to be a more primitive type. These characteristics may be considered an additional criterion for species identification.

Seismic Network Evaluation through Simulation: An Application to the Italian National Seismic Network

2011

Abstract A properly organized seismic network is a valuable tool for monitoring seismic zones and assessing seismic hazards. In this paper we propose a new method (seismic network evaluation through simulation, SNES) to evaluate the performance of hypocenter location of a seismic network. The SNES method gives, as a function of magnitude, hypocentral depth, and confidence level, the spatial distribution of the number of active stations in the location procedure and their relative azimuthal gaps, along with confidence intervals in hypocentral parameters. The application of the SNES method also permits evaluation of the magnitude of completeness ( M C ), the background noise levels at the sta…

New off-line ion source infrastructure at IGISOL

2016

Uusi off-line ionilähdeasema on otettu käyttöön IGISOL-laitteistolla Jyväskylän yliopistossa. EPICS ohjelmistopak…

How Do Viewers Spontaneously Segment Animated Diagrams of Mechanical and Biological Subject Matter?

2012

A challenges for learning from animated diagrams is to first parse the continuous flow of information into discrete event units. Inadequacies in this parsing process can prejudice the quality of the mental model constructed from the depiction. One approach that has been proposed for ameliorating such problems is for the designer to pre-segment the animation. However, the pre-segmentation techniques used tend to be either intuitive or based on an expert's understanding of the subject matter. Neither of these approaches takes proper account of the psychological processing that must occur for an external animation to be properly internalized. This poster reports a study of the processes that l…

Representation of physical activity domains and sedentary behaviors across categories of gender and disability in children’s TV cartoons

2018

Television (TV) cartoons could reflect and shape social values about children’s health-related behaviors. The main aim of this study is to analyze the portrayal of physical activity (PA) domains in the most popular Spanish children’s television (TV) cartoons. It is performed a content analysis of each scene following a coding scheme. The sample selected included the five most popular children’s TV cartoons for the 2013-2014 period in Spain. Our results show a large gap between the modest representation of different PA domains compared to the overwhelming depiction of sedentary behaviors. We do not find evidence of males and females participating equally in a variety of PA domains, and we fa…
