Choice of CTO scores to predict procedural success in clinical practice. A comparison of 4 different CTO PCI scores in a comprehensive national regis…
2021
Background We aimed to compare the performance of the recent CASTLE score to J-CTO, CL and PROGRESS CTO scores in a comprehensive database of percutaneous coronary intervention of chronic total occlusion procedures. Methods Scores were calculated using raw data from 1,342 chronic total occlusion procedures included in REBECO Registry that includes learning and expert operators. Calibration, discrimination and reclassification were evaluated and compared. Results Mean score values were: CASTLE 1.60±1.10, J-CTO 2.15±1.24, PROGRESS 1.68±0.94 and CL 2.52±1.52 points. The overall percutaneous coronary intervention success rate was 77.8%. Calibration was good for CASTLE and CL, but not for J-CTO…
Survival of European children and young adults with cancer diagnosed 1995-2002
2009
This study analyses survival in 40,392 children (age 0-14 years) and 30,187 adolescents/young adults (age 15-24 years) diagnosed with cancer between 1995 and 2002. The cases were from 83 European population-based cancer registries in 23 countries participating in EUROCARE-4. Five-year survival in countries and in regional groupings of countries was compared for all cancers combined and for major cancers. Survival for 15 rare cancers in children was also analysed. Five-year survival for all cancers combined was 81% in children and 87% in adolescents/young adults. Between-country survival differences narrowed for both children and adolescents/young adults. Relative risk of death reduced signi…
Population-based epidemiologic data on brain tumors in German children.
2001
BACKGROUND Brain tumors are the most common disease group of solid tumors in childhood, and children with brain tumors have a relatively poor survival rate. Epidemiologic data from a population-based cancer registry provide the necessary information to obtain a full picture of the frequency of this disease, which is a great challenge in pediatric oncology. METHODS The German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR) is a population-based registry. The level of completeness of patient registration is 95%, but it is somewhat lower for patients with brain tumors. More than 300 children with newly diagnosed brain tumors are reported every year. Analyses of GCCR data are performed according to the Intern…
Incidence and time trends of soft tissue sarcomas in German children 1985-2004 - a report from the population-based German Childhood Cancer Registry.
2008
Abstract The incidence of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) in Europe is increasing, but it is unclear whether this increase can also be seen in Germany. We analysed the heterogeneous group of STS recorded to the German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR) between 1985 and 2004 with respect to incidence data. Age-specific, age-standardised and cumulative incidence rates were calculated. Additionally, the average annual percent change (AAPC), derived from a Poisson regression model, was estimated, using time in years as the explanatory, continuous variable. Two thousand sixty-one children were diagnosed at a median age of 72 months. Most common are rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) (n = 1202) and fibrosarcomas (n…
High dose inhalation interleukin-2 therapy for lung metastases in patients with malignant melanoma.
2000
BACKGROUND The lungs are a frequent site of metastasis in patients with melanoma, and this may cause respiratory problems in the terminal phase of the illness. Inhalation interleukin (IL)-2 therapy to the lung has been piloted and appears to be well tolerated. METHODS Twenty-seven patients were treated with single agent dacarbazine and concurrent high dose inhalation IL-2 36 million IU per day). The patients previously had progressed on chemotherapy, predominately dacarbazine-based regimens. Patients included those with American Joint Committee on Cancer Stage IV melanoma, predominately those with lung metastases, but patients with extrapulmonary metastases also were allowed on the study. R…
Rapid titration with intravenous morphine for severe cancer pain and immediate oral conversion
2002
BACKGROUND Cancer pain emergencies presenting with severe excruciating pain require a rapid application of powerful analgesic strategies. The aim of the current study was to evaluate a method of rapid titration with intravenous morphine to achieve relief of cancer pain of severe intensity. METHODS Forty-nine consecutive patients admitted to a Pain Relief and Palliative Care Unit for severe and prolonged pain were enrolled in the study. Pain was evaluated on a numeric scale of 0–10 (0 indicated no pain and 10 indicated excruciating pain). After the initial assessment (T0), an intravenous line was inserted and boluses of morphine (2 mg every 2 minutes) were given until the initial signs of si…
Occupational group, educational level, marital status and deleterious habits among individuals with maxillofacial fractures: retrospective study
2018
Background To investigate the occupational profile, educational level, marital status and deleterious habits to the health of patients with maxillofacial fractures of a population of northeastern Brazil. Material and Methods A retrospective study of patients records admitted to the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Walter Cantídio University Hospital (Fortaleza, Brazil) who sustained maxillofacial fractures was conducted in the period between 2006 and 2015. Results A total of 338 patients rendered 355 fractures. Males were the most affected (p<0.001), with prevalence in the third decade of life (p<0.001). There was a predominance of motorcycle accidents (p<0.001), home worke…
Prevalence of diphtheria toxin antibodies in human sera from a cross-section of the Italian population.
1999
Abstract A polycentric study was carried out between 1993 and 1995 in order to evaluate diphtheria immunity on a representative sample of population from different areas of Italy. To determine diphtheria antitoxin, sera from 5187 apparently healthy subjects, divided according to sex and age groups, were titrated using an ELISA indirect method. A basic protective titre of diphtheria antitoxin (>0.01 IU ml −1 ) was found in 4080 (78.6%) subjects. No statistically significant differences between males and females were observed. Our findings show that the proportion of susceptibles increases with age and a high proportion of adults no longer has diphtheria antitoxin at protective levels since t…
Epidemiology and diagnostic and therapeutic management of febrile seizures in the Italian pediatric emergency departments: A prospective observationa…
2015
AIM: Febrile seizures (FS) involve 2-5% of the paediatric population, among which Complex FS (CFS) account for one third of accesses for FS in Emergency Departments (EDs). The aim of our study was to define the epidemiology, the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic approach to FS and CFSs in the Italian EDs. METHODS: A multicenter prospective observational study was performed between April 2014 and March 2015. Patients between 1 and 60 months of age, randomly accessing to ED for ongoing FS or reported FS at home were included. Demographic features and diagnostic-therapeutic follow-up were recorded. FS were categorized in simple (<10min), prolonged (10-30min) and status epilepticus (>3…
Interrogator intonation and memory encoding performance.
2019
Based on recent findings that interrogator intonation can enhance interrogative suggestibility during recall phases, the present study tested influences of interrogator intonation on memory performance even as early as at the encoding stage. We experimentally manipulated interrogator intonation during encoding of a story to be recalled in immediate and delayed subsequent memory tests (Experiment 1, N = 50). As expected, a symmetrically structuring vs. an isolating-emphasizing speaking style generally increased the amount of freely recalled details. In a more fine-grained experiment (N = 50), we additionally manipulated emphasized story details and tested recall rates for peripheral, neutral…
