A pilot study comparing different dose levels and administration schedules of interferon-α2b combined with epirubicin for prevention of recurrence in…
1992
A pilot study in 62 patients has been carried out to evaluate the combination of epirubicin and interferon (IFN)-alpha 2b using different doses and schedules of intravesical administration in the prevention of recurrence of bladder cancer. Preliminary results show greater prophylactic efficacy not only when higher doses of epirubicin and IFN-alpha 2b are used but also when a larger interval between instillation of the compounds was used.
“Dose-Dense Primary Chemotherapy, as Part of Multidisciplinary Treatment, for Inoperable Stage III B Breast Cancer - Long-Term Results of a Phase II …
2007
<i>Background:</i> Primary chemotherapy as part of multidisciplinary approach is the established treatment for inoperable stage III B breast cancer. The primary endpoints were conversion to operable disease and feasibility of conservative surgery (breast-conserving therapy: BCT); secondary were clinical and pathological complete response rate, local and distant control and safety of the primary regimen. <i>Methods:</i> Between 1998 and 2001, 40 inoperable breast cancer patients ≤60 years, 72% T4abc and 28% T4d, received 6 cycles of primary PEV dose-dense regimen: cisplatin 50 mg/m2, epirubicin 100 mg/m2 and vinorelbine 25…
“Unexpectedly high survival rate in very poor prognosis stage III B breast cancer patients receiving cisplatin-based primary chemotherapy. A multicen…
2004
605 Background: Primary chemotherapy, as part of multimodality treatment, has become the standard of care for locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) to increase DFS, OS and conservative surgery. Stage III B is renowned as the worst of LABC, and despite appropriate therapy the majority of patients (pts) will experience distant metastases and death within 2–3 years. The optimal regimen and schedule of primary chemotherapy is uncertain. Aim of our study was to verify the efficacy of an original cisplatin-based regimen (PEV) in terms of response and survival. Methods: Between 1996 and 2001 72 consecutive III B pts were treated with primary chemotherapy: Cisplatin 50 mg/m2, Epirubicin 100 mg/m2, …
Secondary acute leukemia following mitoxantrone-based high-dose chemotherapy for primary breast cancer patients.
2003
The incidence of secondary myelodysplasia/acute myeloid leukemia (AML) was retrospectively assessed in an international joint study in 305 node-positive breast cancer patients, who received mitoxantrone-based high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) followed by autologous stem cell support as adjuvant therapy. The median age of the patients was 57 years (range 22-67). In all, 268 patients received peripheral blood stem cells, and 47 patients received autologous bone marrow. After a median follow-up of 57 months (range 10-125), three cases of secondary AML (sAML) were observed, resulting in a cumulative incidence of 0.94%. One case of sAML developed 18 months after HDCT (FAB M3) The karyotype was trans…
Prognostic Impact of Immunoglobulin Kappa C in Breast Cancer Patients Treated with Adjuvant Chemotherapy.
2020
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Immunoglobulin κC (IGKC)-positive tumor-infiltrating plasma cells are associated with better prognosis in node-negative breast cancer patients without adjuvant systemic therapy. In the present study we evaluated the prognostic significance of IGKC in breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy ± tamoxifen. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> IGKC expression was immunohistochemically analyzed in 193 breast cancer patients who were treated with adjuvant chemotherapy, either with cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil (CMF) or 5-fluorouracil, epirubicin, and cyclophosphamide (FEC) between 1993 and 2001 wit…
Ozone therapy can be considered as an integrative therapy in oncology? [abstract]
2019
BACKGROUND: Our group in Policlinic Umberto I - University Hospital of Sapienza Rome - has decided to further investigate if Ozone therapy can be of support in oncology.
In literature it has been reported that ozone applications in oncology or in cancer cells is associated with: high efficiency in preventing chemotherapy complications (nausea, vomiting, opportunistic infections, asthenia) as well as confining or restricting the expansion of tumours.(1-5)

PURPOSE: The aim of our study in to evaluate and eventually confirm the validity of ozone treatments in order to consider such procedures as a possible and concrete support therapy for oncology patients undertaking chemot…

Gastric cancer: epidemiology, pathology and treatment.
2003
Gastric cancer incidence and mortality has fallen dramatically over the last 50 years in many regions, but remains the second most common cancer worldwide. Despite a marked decline in fundic and distal tumors, there is a rising incidence of adenocarcinomas of the gastroesophageal junction and gastric cardia, particularly in Western nations. This may imply that there are in fact two diseases differing from each other in epidemiology, etiology, pathology and clinical expression. While surgical resection remains the cornerstone of gastric cancer treatment, the optimum extent of nodal resection remains controversial, with randomized studies failing to show that the D2 procedure improves surviva…
Tumor response assessment by modified Choi criteria in localized high-risk soft tissue sarcoma treated with chemotherapy.
2012
BACKGROUND. The objective of this study was to compare the prognostic relevance of Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) versus Choi criteria for the assessment of response in patients with high-risk soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities or trunk wall who received preoperative chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy in a phase 3 trial. METHODS. Patients received 3 cycles of preoperative epirubicin þ ifosfamide with or without radiotherapy. The diagnostic concordance between RECIST and Choi criteria and their correlation with overall survival (OS) and freedom from progression (FFP) were evaluated in a univariate Cox regression model. RESULTS. In 243 of 321 eligible patient…
Surgical treatment of solitary sternal metastasis from breast cancer Case report
2016
Bone metastasis is a frequent and early complication of breast cancer. This case report describes a technique for a partial exeresis of the sternum and the reconstruction of the pleura with autologous dermis from the lower abdomen and the loss of substance with a myocutaneous flap.We describe the case of a 50-year old woman with a sternal excavated lesion with pathologic fracture due to an invasive adenocarcinoma, treated with a partial exeresis of the sternum and the reconstruction with a myocutaneous flap. The patient doesn't show evidence of recurrent disease and the stability of her chest well preserved.Metastatic breast cancer to the sternum, if detected early and treated aggressively, …
