Considering syntrophic acetate oxidation and ionic strength improves the performance of models for food waste anaerobic digestion.

2021

Current mechanistic anaerobic digestion (AD) models cannot accurately represent the underlying processes occurring during food waste (FW) AD. This work presents an update of the Anaerobic Digestion Model no. 1 (ADM1) to provide accurate estimations of free ammonia concentrations and related inhibition thresholds, and model syntrophic acetate oxidation as acetate-consuming pathway. A modified Davies equation predicted NH3 concentrations and pH more accurately, and better estimated associated inhibitory limits. Sensitivity analysis results showed the importance of accurate disintegration kinetics and volumetric mass transfer coefficients, as well as volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and hydrogen up…

Are remote sensing evapotranspiration models reliable across South American ecoregions?

2021

Many remote sensing-based evapotranspiration (RSBET) algorithms have been proposed in the past decades and evaluated using flux tower data, mainly over North America and Europe. Model evaluation across South America has been done locally or using only a single algorithm at a time. Here, we provide the first evaluation of multiple RSBET models, at a daily scale, across a wide variety of biomes, climate zones, and land uses in South America. We used meteorological data from 25 flux towers to force four RSBET models: Priestley–Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory (PT-JPL), Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), Penman–Monteith Mu model (PM-MOD), and Penman–Monteith Nagler model (PME-VI).…

A generalization of Françoise's algorithm for calculating higher order Melnikov functions

2002

Abstract In [J. Differential Equations 146 (2) (1998) 320–335], Francoise gives an algorithm for calculating the first nonvanishing Melnikov function Ml of a small polynomial perturbation of a Hamiltonian vector field and shows that Ml is given by an Abelian integral. This is done under the condition that vanishing of an Abelian integral of any polynomial form ω on the family of cycles implies that the form is algebraically relatively exact. We study here a simple example where Francoise's condition is not verified. We generalize Francoise's algorithm to this case and we show that Ml belongs to the C [ log t,t,1/t] module above the Abelian integrals. We also establish the linear differentia…

A regional analysis of the effects of largest events on soil erosion

2012

A large amount of geomorphic work is caused by a small number of extreme events that are mainly responsible for the time compression of geomorphic processes. The classic approach defines extreme events by their magnitude and they are quantified by certain deviation from a central value. Alternatively, we define extreme events as the largest events sorted by rank, whatever their absolute magnitude. In this case, events with equal rank from two different sites can be responsible for different magnitudes of geomorphic work, e.g., the amount of erosion. The new approach applied to soil erosion is that, whatever the magnitude of soil eroded, erosion is a time compressed process and the percentag…

Absolute measurement of quadratic nonlinearities from phase-matched second-harmonic generation in a single KTP crystal cut as a sphere

1997

We determine within an accuracy of ∼10% the absolute magnitude of the quadratic effective coefficients of types I and II phase-matched second-harmonic generation from conversion efficiency measurements in a single nonlinear crystal cut as a sphere. The agreement is good with measurements performed in thin parallelepipedal samples. The material studied is KTiOPO4, for which improved Sellmeier equations are given.

Kinetics of the intestinal uptake of zinc acexamate in normal and zinc-depleted rats.

1990

Abstract The uptake of zinc as acexamic acid salt in the small intestine of the anaesthetized rat was shown to be a two-phase process in normal animals. The first phase is rapid mucosal binding which satisfies the Freundlich isotherm equation and which involves about 30 per cent of the initially perfused zinc. The second phase was characterized as an apparent absorption step which obeys Michaelis-Menten and first-order combined kinetics, with the following parameters: Vm = 6.51 mg h−1; Km = 2.96 mg; ka = 0.306 h−1. In largely non-saturated conditions, an apparent global rate constant of about 2.50 h−1 was calculated. No significant interference due to endogenous zinc excretion into the smal…

Biexciton formation and exciton coherent coupling in layered GaSe.

2015

Nonlinear two-dimensional Fourier transform (2DFT) and linear absorption spectroscopy are used to study the electronic structure and optical properties of excitons in the layered semiconductor GaSe. At the 1s exciton resonance, two peaks are identified in the absorption spectra, which are assigned to splitting of the exciton ground state into the triplet and singlet states. 2DFT spectra acquired for co-linear polarization of the excitation pulses feature an additional peak originating from coherent energy transfer between the singlet and triplet. At cross-linear polarization of the excitation pulses, the 2DFT spectra expose a new peak likely originating from bound biexcitons. The polarizati…

Photochemical generation of E′ centres from Si–H in amorphous SiO2under pulsed ultraviolet laser radiation

2006

In situ optical absorption spectroscopy was used to study the generation of E' centres () in amorphous SiO2 occurring by photo-induced breaking of Si–H groups under 4.7 eV pulsed laser radiation. The dependence on laser intensity of the defect generation rate is consistent with a two-photon mechanism for Si–H rupture, while the growth and saturation of the defects are conditioned by their concurrent annealing due to a reaction with mobile hydrogen arising from the same precursor. A rate equation is proposed to model the kinetics of the defects and is tested on experimental data.
