Self-assembly of colloidal micelles in microfluidic channels.

2016

The self-assembly of amphiphilic Janus colloids in microfluidic channels is studied using hybrid molecular dynamics simulations with fully resolved hydrodynamic interactions incorporated through the multi-particle collision dynamics algorithm. The simulations are conducted at a density and temperature where the Janus particles spontaneously self-assemble into spherical micelles to minimize the interface between the solvophobic caps and the surrounding solvent. In confined systems, this contact area can also be reduced by aggregation at the channel walls. Indeed, a sizable fraction of free particles and small clusters with three and four members are found at the walls when the microfluidic c…

Sex differences in genetic and environmental effects on aggression

2003

The aim of the present study was to investigate the genetic and environmental factors influencing teacher and parental rated aggression in boys and girls, asking whether the magnitude of these effects is similar across rater and sex. The study is part of an ongoing nationwide twin-family study of behavioral development and health habits carried out in Finland. The sample consisted of 1651 twin pairs (264 monozygotic male, 300 monozygotic female, 292 dizygotic male, 278 dizygotic female, and 517 dizygotic opposite-sex twin pairs), representing subsets of five 11- to 12-year-old twin cohorts (b. 1983-1987). The data were collected using the teacher and parental rating forms of the Multidimens…

Contribution of genetic and environmental effects to postural balance in older female twins

2003

The aim of the present study was to determine the relative roles of genetic and environmental influences on postural balance in older women. The participants were 97 monozygotic (MZ) and 102 dizygotic (DZ) female twins, aged 64–76 yr. Postural sway was measured during side-by-side stance with eyes open and eyes closed, and during semitandem stance with eyes open on a force platform. Sway data were condensed into four first-order and one second-order latent factors. The second-order factor, named balance, incorporates sway data from multiple tests and thus best describes the phenotype of postural balance. The contribution of genetic and environmental influences on the variability of the lat…

Does optimism mediate the relationship between Big Five and perceived stress? A study with Spanish adolescents

2021

Straining at work and its relationship with personality profiles and individual consequences in healthcare workers (HCWs)

2020

Straining is an attenuated form of mobbing, in which the continuity of vexatious actions is not driven by a discriminatory intent. With the objective of testing the possible moderating role of personality in the relationship between perceptions about straining at work and individual consequences, a correlational design research involved 374 healthcare workers (HCWs) from two Italian hospitals. The following questionnaires were administered: (1) Short Negative Acts Questionnaire (S-NAQ), to assess discriminative actions at work)

Associations between personality, sports participation and athletic success. A comparison of Big Five in sporting and non-sporting adults

2018

Abstract The present study investigates whether the Big Five personality traits are different among diverse sports populations. A sample of 881 male athletes and non-athletes completed a self-report questionnaire measuring their personality traits. The Exploratory Structure Equation Modeling (ESEM) approach is adopted to test measurement invariance and mean differences among groups. The results indicate that athletes who had experienced the most success in their sport scored higher than non-athletes in each personality dimension of the Big Five, with the exception of openness, while less successful athletes scored higher than non-athletes only in extraversion and agreeableness. The more suc…

Adaptive BEM for Low Noise Propeller Design

2009

A potential-based Boundary Element Method is presented for the aerodynamic and acoustic design of propel- lers at on- and off-design point conditions. Using an adaptive method, a family of airfoil sections is selected to produce the required performance (thrust, torque and efficiency versus advance ratio) at different cruise flight levels. Climb condi- tions are also considered in order to check the off-design point performance. Once the available airfoil data have been stored in a database, the code processes the families of airfoils to generate a complete geometry for a propeller of the specified performance with an optimized noise emission. The computational scheme adjusts the blade geom…

Dynamics of the general factor of personality: A predictor mathematical tool of alcohol misuse

2020

[EN] There are few studies developed about the general factor of personality (GFP) dynamics. This paper uses a dynamical mathematical model, the response model, to predict the short-term effects of a dose of alcohol on GFP and reports the results of an alcohol intake experiment. The GFP dynamical mechanism of change is based on the unique trait personality theory (UTPT). This theory proposes the existence of GFP, which occupies the apex of the hierarchy of personality. An experiment with 37 volunteers was performed. All the participants completed The five-adjective scale of the general factor of personality (GFP-FAS) in trait-format (GFP-T) and state-format (GFP-S) before alcohol consumptio…

Characters, bilinear forms and solvable groups

2016

Abstract We prove a number of results about the ordinary and Brauer characters of finite solvable groups in characteristic 2, by defining and using the concept of the extended nucleus of a real irreducible character. In particular we show that the Isaacs canonical lift of a real irreducible Brauer character has Frobenius–Schur indicator +1. We also show that the principal indecomposable module corresponding to a real irreducible Brauer character affords a quadratic geometry if and only if each extended nucleus is a split extension of a nucleus.

On the critical behavior for time-fractional pseudo-parabolic type equations with combined nonlinearities

2022

AbstractWe are concerned with the existence and nonexistence of global weak solutions for a certain class of time-fractional inhomogeneous pseudo-parabolic-type equations involving a nonlinearity of the form $|u|^{p}+\iota |\nabla u|^{q}$ | u | p + ι | ∇ u | q , where $p,q>1$ p , q > 1 , and $\iota \geq 0$ ι ≥ 0 is a constant. The cases $\iota =0$ ι = 0 and $\iota >0$ ι > 0 are discussed separately. For each case, the critical exponent in the Fujita sense is obtained. We point out two interesting phenomena. First, the obtained critical exponents are independent of the fractional orders of the time derivative. Secondly, in the case $\iota >0$ ι > 0 , we show that the gradie…
